Jorge Posada Benched, Eric Chavez to DH Indefinitely

Jorge Posada is not in the lineup tonight, and will likely not be in the lineup much more in the future. Eric Chavez will be the new primary DH, and if that doesn't work out, Jesus Montero will be promoted. Don't expect to see Montero in the Bronx on Tuesday though, according to Joel Sherman.

Per Sherman:

I heard not 1-day thing. going with Chavez [at] DH for [a]while. If that [doesn't] work, [they] will try Montero, but no immediate plans to call [up] Montero.

Posada says Girardi told him going with best lineup, again that is not just for tonight.

Erik Boland adds:

Posada: "I'm not happy about it," but "I put myself in this situation."

Mark Feinsand contributes (a first for him):

Girardi: Yanks going to "try some different things" with Posada, so he's not in the DH mix right now. Said his roster spot isn't in trouble.

Marc Carig with the scoop:

Yankees for now will stick with the "status quo," meaning Montero [is] staying in the minors.

More to come. The preview is below. That will be updated with lineups and game news while this post will be updated with DH news, if any more comes.

Wow

At least Jorge is taking responsibility this time around.

I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?

Chavez is actually strong defensively, so I think this is a waste.

Getting his bat in the lineup is good, but while A-Rod is out, he should be playing 3rd often, not just DHing.

I'd also rather see someone not quite as adept with the glove as DH.

But given that they’re not going to DFA Posada, who is the alternative? Jones?

In other news, Chase Utley just threw his bat at Lincecum, clipping him on the ankle.

Call up Montero, have him DH 3 days a week.

Have Chavez play 3rd and DH when Montero catches 3-4 days a week. That way, you are still getting 3-4 days a week for Chavez on defense. When A-Rod comes back, you readjust.

If he throws another shit fit, the Yankees would be right to DFA him.
I’m all for giving the vets a respectful sendoff. But this is clearly Jorge’s last season in pinstripes, if not the last season of his career (I don’t know who would sign him, but I figure if Jason Giambi can hold on for 3 or 4 seasons as a bench player, Jorge could too), and if he pouts, I don’t know who would defend him.

I think this basically tells us that Montero will not be up before September

The only good thing about Chavez being DH is Nunez getting into the game, but this is basically destroying our bench. If someone goes down we won’t have anyone to put in without losing the DH. At this point it seems Posada is going to be clogging up the bench, he won’t be DHing, he’ll pinch hit some games and maybe he’ll play a game or two at first (Jorge Vazquez might get a September call up because of this) but other than that he won’t be doing anything.

He missed MONTHS from just running the bases.

He still has to do that as a DH. Playing every day only increases the chances. It’s hardly protecting him from anything.

Unless you're a pitcher or Gustavo Molina, kindly SWING THE BAT and ignore the Binder's bunt signal.

I dont even know im bothering, the people in charge obviously see it my way

How does Nunez benefit more from being a DH than from being in the field trying to improve his defense?

Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.

Guh

That’s not even remotely close to what my point is. I’ll say this: Chavez cannot be an every day player. Chavez should not play more than 3-4 days a week, and he is a defensive wizard. Play Chavez 1 game at 3rd and maybe bench Nunez for that game. Chavez gets 2-3 at DH. Who DH’s the other 3?

I never said never play Chavez at 3B, all I said was I understand why they want him DHing

Jones at DH, Chavez at 3B, Nunez on the bench and can be put in the outfield or infield just in case. That would be more productive

by jetanumba2 on Aug 7, 2011 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Jones is entirely dependent on the handedness of the pitcher.

That’s not good for an every day DH.

true, true. then they would have to change it up depending on who is pitching.

Our bench tonight:

Cervelli, Posada, Jones.

Awesome.

to hell with defensive replacements

I would rather let the kid play and leave Jones on the bench

you can’t have Chavez at 3B and Nunez at DH. If Chavez is hurt we lose the DH (and that could happen at any moment)

by jetanumba2 on Aug 7, 2011 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I would have to believe the Yanks wont continue going with a three man bench

And that is the issue.

Benching Posada is fine and good. Not bringing up someone else in that situation is dumb, because you have 1 of 3 bench players being useless.

Even if Posada was hitting like Posada used to, a 3 man bench is pretty dumb

Of course, but a 2 man bench is worse.

he's still a good 3B

he should be playing there

I never once said he wasnt a good 3B, hes probably the best defensive 3B on our roster

I believe they are DHing him to try to avoid an injury. Id also be very surprised if he didnt still play some 3B till ARod comes back.

The only way he'll avoid injury is if they pinch run for him every time he's on base

since you can’t do that, you can’t protect him.

Playing 3B, he’s not gonna get hurt.

So playing 3B isnt more of a probability of gettin hurt or tweaking his back?

No.

Swinging the bat or running around the bases is.

he has to bat and run either way, I rather him be as productive as possible (playing 3B) before he can get hurt again

by jetanumba2 on Aug 7, 2011 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

So basically, he can’t hit and he can’t field, so he gets a roster spot. Got it.

I so called this today.

In “The Future” thread, I said when A-Rod gets back the DH should be split between Chavez/Nunez depending on the handedness of the pitcher. The FO so reads PSA.

I'm fine with Chavez as DH

Less likely to get hurt as a DH for one, but the other thing is Nunez is supposed to have a future as a Yankee, Chavez not so much.
