Trade Deadline Open Thread

The writers here at Pinstripe Alley will be updating this throughout the day with any meaningful transactions that are made. Keep the trade talk here, and the game talk in the game thread.

4:15: Final news. Red Sox acquire Erik Bedard, Trayvon Robinson, and Josh Fields in three team deal, including many prospects going between Dodgers and Mariners.

Yankees did NOT make any deals today.

4:00: No more moves to announce, but stay tuned. Some deals aren't reported until after the deadline.

3:25: Pirates get Ryan Ludwick from Padres.

2:56: Rumors had Wandy Rodriguez heading to Cleveland for two prospects, but those turned out to be false, not surprisingly.

Yankees currently have very little going on, though they are interested in Ian Stewart of the Rockies.

The Yankees current talks with the Astros about Wandy Rodriguez are dead, as the Astros want prospects and the Yankees to eat the contract.

The Red Sox are working hard to get deals done, but nothing has happened yet.

Heath Bell is still available.

2:34: Rangers acquire Mike Adams from Padres for Robbie Erlin and Joe Wieland.

1:40: A's trade Brad Ziegler to Diamondbacks for Brandon Allen and Jordan Noberto.

12:50: 50/50 chance of a Wandy Rodriguez deal happening, Yankees one of teams involved.

12:44: More non deadline news, Yankees see Jesus Montero as someone that can help the team soon. Awesome.

UPDATE: 12:37 PM: Non trade news, but Manny Banuelos' next start will be in AAA.

Josh Norris asked this on Twitter

How confident are you guys that we end up keeping Banuelos, Betances, Montero (percentage for each)?

I just want to keep ManBan and Betances. Gotta at least see what they can do at the Major League level. If Montero brings a piece to help take us to the Series I’d be all for it.

I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?

Romine and Sanchez

make Jesus more expendable than the B’s. Agree.

I’d have to be blown away but i would trade Montero. Not the B’s

Seeing as neither one of those guys are even close to Jesus’ level, no they don’t.

Until they show what they can do at this level the minors don’t mean shit. It’s been shown time and again. Montero may be great, maybe not. Same with Romine.

I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?

by david d on Jul 31, 2011 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

dude, Romine is not nearly as good.

by jetanumba2 on Jul 31, 2011 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Sanchez is 18 right now and is hitting a 101 wRC+ in A ball. When Murphy was 18 in A ball, he had a 98 wRC+. When Romine was 18 he wasn’t a pro yet, but at 19 in A ball he hit 120 wRC+. When Montero was 18 in A ball, he hit a 142 wRC+.

So none of those guys were as good as Montero at the same age.

So now the guys in the subway are saying Jesus is coming on October 21, 2011, but that would mean he wouldn't be on the playoff roster, let alone be eligible for it. I really don't know where these guys are getting their information from...

No, but what it means is that Montero is better than the others, so he has a better chance of having more success at the major league level.

That I kinda agree with, “chance”. But the list of top prospect flops is long. And the list of surprises is just as long. I’m just trying to make the point that there is no guarantee from any of these guys and since we have all these capable catchers(plus Martin), if Montero can bring us a piece to the championship puzzle, he needs to pull the trigger.

I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?

i read it and the context in which you wrote it implied that you were grouping him with the capable minor league catchers without excluding the ‘capable’ from Martin. you also imply that Martin is a better option or a just as good option in the wake of Montero being traded. Martin sucks. He shouldn’t be full time catcher with or without Montero

No one that’s worth a damn is available. If Cashman could get Josh Johnson or Felix Hernandez or Clayton Kershaw for Montero, don’t you think he would? He’s not going to pay a gold coin for something that’s only worth a copper one.

This always makes me laugh. The guys you named for an unproven Montero whose catching skills are questionable and whose numbers are way off from last season. He’s worth a 2 straight up at best. Unless packaged with another top prospect we ain’t getting an ace. lol.

Well yeah, it would require more than just Montero, but Cashman has made it clear that he will only include Montero in a trade if it’s for a legit ace.

well, some of those guys did flop. Regardless, when a position player is a top 10 prospect in baseball, the odds of him succeeding are much higher than the odds of him flopping. Pitchers are another story, though.

I’d agree with that, maybe going so far as to preferring some parts of the movies over parts of the books (the third, in particular.)

As for storyline, the second and third movies share only a name with the books. I’m not sure it matters who wrote the books, as long as the movies can take the titles.

Yeah, he’s an above average pitcher. People on BR are flipping 5 shits, “OMG, HE HAS A CAREER ERA OF 4.11!” Yeah, but in the last 4 years it’s been 3.38 with good peripherals to back it up. Plus, he’s a LHP with pretty good ground ball rates, which is the ideal pitcher for Yankee Stadium.

the Yankees are going to have a ton of spots filled for future seasons

And a ton of in house options as well. Burnett is signed through 2013, CC will be here a while. And then you have Phil Hughes, Ivan Nova, both Killer Bs, Adam Warren, David Phelps and others in the minor leagues. And there will be some free agent options over the next few years as well that are better guys to have in the rotation than Wandy Rodriguez.

I think the future looks pretty bright rotation-wise for the Yankees. I have no interest in Wandy.

Well who would you take out for Wandy?

There are six starters right now, and they’re either trading one away for Wandy (which I will be furious about), or they will now have seven starters. Who do you replace?

In the offseason, Garcia and Colon are probably gone, but that leaves CC, Burnett, Hughes and Nova in the rotation at least for next season. I see that Wandy could take up the fifth spot, but there are free agent options (Yu Darvish?), and minor league options that I’d rather go with. And I’d be surprised if at least one of the Killer Bs didn’t debut at some point next season.

For now, I don’t believe Garcia and Colon will both last the season. Stick Wandy in there for now, figure out between the rest who gets demoted or whatever, insert said pitcher for Colon/Garcia. Best case scenario you have way too much depth. Fine with me.

So now the guys in the subway are saying Jesus is coming on October 21, 2011, but that would mean he wouldn't be on the playoff roster, let alone be eligible for it. I really don't know where these guys are getting their information from...

Time to narrow it down.

Can’t be Red Sox, Mets, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Rays, Blue Jays

Could be Orioles, Twins, Tigers, Indians, Angels, Athletics, Rangers, Mariners, Nationals, Cubs, Astros, Reds, Cardinals, Brewers, Dodgers, Giants, Padres,

To narrow it down to strong possibilities: Tigers, Indians, Athletics, Cubs, Reds, Cardinals

But Rays are in our division, so that’s not really that funny, and we’ve actually made a couple trades with the Diamondbacks.

My office has Macs for design stuff, but they’re running Snow Leopard still. The Apple Store here is selling the upgrade for about $50 or so. Not sure if they’re even interested, though. The rest of us scrubs get Windows laptops, haha.

How is Snow Leopard? I need convincing to switch. Love everything Apple’s made so far, but just hesitant to plop down $1500ish dollars on a laptop.

by Hasan Paliwala on Jul 31, 2011 5:29 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Snow Leopard was great.

I would have been perfectly happy staying with it if my Lion upgrade hadn’t been free. I didn’t use some of the programs people loved Snow Leopard for like Expose and Spaces, but it seems like they are disappointed in the changes to those in Lion. I have had a regular Macbook and now a Macbook Pro and I have loved them both. I think they are tremendously user friendly once you get the hang of the Windows to Mac differences. No viruses is definitely a plus. Their customer service is the best I’ve ever dealt with.

The differences between Snow Leopard and Lion?

Or Mac and Windows?

Mac and Windows

I’ve only used a Mac a few times. And that was an iMac. Tried it out at the Apple Store, but not really sure on the differences. Major YouTube session coming up, I guess.

If you can conquer the trackpad, which has a small learning curve, it's gravy.

Stuff like everything on your machine being in Finder instead of the Start menu, the bottom of the trackpad is the only button, close/minimize/maximize on the left instead of right. Other than that, it’s stuff you could figure out within a day or so of playing around with it.

I tell people if my dad, most technologically deficient person I know, can convert with less than 5 help me phone calls, anyone can.

I installed a nodded version of OS X on my Windows PC

But it was no fun without the Mac keyboard/mouse. I have little doubt I’ll like it. Just wondering if the premium (it’s nearly double the price of a better specced Windows 7 laptop here) is worth it. I’ll keep my PC for gaming anyway, so the switch isn’t that drastic.

The trackpad was what got me really intrigued, actually.

Biased opinion says yes because I hate Windows haha.

It’s a big investment, but to me, it’s been well worth it for the stability while being in school.

Big props to him

I hope he stays. And I really, really hope that whatever shit he gets for “standing pat” is thrown back into their face by us winning this year.

Even if they don’t win this year, it doesn’t matter. They’re retaining top prospects and showing faith in them. The future is bright.

Oh, I'd honestly be ok even if we don't make the playoffs this year if we get a chance to keep our prospects

It’s just that he will definitely be second-guessed if we don’t make it to the WS. Which is completely ass-backwards, but such is life.

Astros wanted the Yankees to take on all salary and give top prospects? After Ruben Amaro just treated them like the Phillies AAA affiliate? Unbelievable.

It really is unbelievable thought. Like teams expect so much more from them because they’re the Yankees. It seems like every time the Yankees inquire on a big name, the team’s asking price from the Yankees is much higher than their asking price from other teams.

Why shouldn’t they? The Yankees have historically been willing to do “whatever it takes to get their man,” so you might as well ask for the moon and the stars, because the Yankees have always dealt from a point of desperation. Hopefully this is the first step of the Yankees ending that trend.

by Lord Duggan on Jul 31, 2011 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

That was a different era, when Steinbrenner was behind everything. Since Cashman has taken over, they’ve said no to lopsided deals like Hughes, Joba, Kennedy and Melky for Santana, or Nova, ManBan, Betances and Montero for Ubaldo.

Just seems like it takes that extra prospect from the Yankees. You’d think teams would start to understand that the Yankees value their prospects just like every other team does.

It is insane, but no one wants to "lose" a trade to the Yankees.

If a certain duo of brothers had their way, I’m sure more teams would be successful in robbing us blind. We’re fortunate to have Cashman who doesn’t just say “OH, OK!”, and ships off the whole farm for one guy.

That’s why two trust-fund babies shouldn’t run a professional baseball team.

I know you weren't serious

But Cash has been very professional in his dealings. I’d think he has a pretty good reputation around the league.

I'm pleased

Teams wanted the entire farm system and Cashman’s first born for players that wouldn’t help that much. I’m sure they will make some value deals in August.

I'm high on Cash love right now because of his sane approach to the trade deadline

If he DFAs Mitre too, I’ll have to start pinching myself.

Seems like there weren't any good fits

Which is fine. Everybody had their right to ask for the whole farm. I just love it that ge refused, then talked about (or at least hinted) that Montero and Man-Ban could help this year. This year!

Hey, I pretty much said that the only reason that Jesus wasn't up already

was because Cashman was saving him for the trade deadline to see if he could get something for him. He couldn’t, so there’s really no reason he shouldn’t be up shortly, outside of witchery or abhorrent stupidity.
