New York Yankees 17 - Baltimore Orioles 3

Mood Music - The Riders of Rohan

Taking both games of today's doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles, the New York Yankees improved to 63-42, picking up a half of a game on the Boston Red Sox in the AL East Standings.  The Red Sox won too, but only once.

After a rough top of the first from Ivan Nova, in which he left his fastball up and relied on the defensive brilliance of Brett Gardner and Curtis Granderson, he settled down into a very solid outing: 7.0 IP - 2 ER - 6 H - 1 BB - 6 K.  Aside from not being able to get out Vladimir Guerrero, which is still not such an easy thing to do, Nova looked strong.  Despite the game turning into a laugher after the first inning, Nova pounding the strike zone and using all of his pitches effectively is a good sign going forward.

Keep this kid in the majors.

The offense exploded in the first inning, with the Yankees pounding out twelve runs on ten hits.   Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher, Andruw Jones, Russell Martin, and Eduardo Nunez all contributed multi-hit games, with both Swisher and Jones hitting home runs.

Making his first appearance since coming off the disabled list, Rafael Soriano pitched a clean top of the ninth.

Freddy Garcia vs. Jake Arrieta tomorrow.  And more importantly, we are less than 20 hours away from trade deadline speculation finally being over.

Play of the Game: Robinson Cano's first inning single to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.

SIERA actually grades his peripherals as being better this year than last. His BB% has dropped, but opponents have a better BABIP on him, and his LOB% is worse. His ERA last year was so low because of an unsustainable low HR/FB rate. I think Jimenez, in a luck neutral year, should put up about a 3.40 ERA, which is solid for a second starter on a contending team, or mediocre for a first starter.

So now the guys in the subway are saying Jesus is coming on October 21, 2011, but that would mean he wouldn't be on the playoff roster, let alone be eligible for it. I really don't know where these guys are getting their information from...

Lincecum's velocity jumped back this year

also lincecum’s velocity was a steady decline into last year before coming back this year. He wasn’t as big as a 3 mph drop. He between 08 and 09 he dropped 1.6 , between 09 and 10 he dropped 1.1. Now he’s back up to 09 velocity

by lololol on Jul 30, 2011 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

but it droppd. And yes, it was more then 3mph. He was 95-96, then 91-92, so it was bigger.

except it wasn't

go look at the avg velocity on fangraphs…his velocity was more of a steady decline rather than a huge drop like Ubaldo. and i didn’t say Ubaldo was injured, but just that i would not be surprised if he had an arm issue like hughes this year.

which has nothing do with my point on that Ubaldo might have an arm issue this year. Even if he’s pitching well (which i know he is). The fact Lincecum was effective and so has Ubaldo despite a velocity drop, has no relation to the fact that Ubaldo might have some red flags this year, which i’m not even guaranteeing is the issue with him. Rather it could be a possibility.

by lololol on Jul 30, 2011 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Lincecum may have had arm issues

or not, which is your entire point.

The overall point is it may, or may not be an issue but recent circumstances (lincecum) say that Jimenez may be just fine.

Also, 96mph is incredible for an average. 93 mph is better then 90% of MLB starters, so he’ll be fine.

The difference between the two is that Lincecum’s best pitch was never his fastball, it has always been his changeup. Jimenez relied on his fastball, so if it degrades, so does he.

A nice game I take it?

I was at the Scranton-Red Wings game, so I missed almost the entire game. Although I got updates on my phone so when I saw 12-0 and still bottom of the first, I was pretty pleased.

As for the Scranton game, I’ve seen better. Montero didn’t do all that well- 3 pretty weakly hit balls (though one dropped in for a hit), and one sharp grounder that ended up being a DP (Jesus is slow as hell by the way). As for his catching, pretty decent. There was just this one with the bases loaded where he tried to scoop it instead of blocking it and it got by him. Warren really struggled (I was rooting to see Igawa in this game, but it didn’t happen), and the relievers were worse. So all in all not the best minor league game I’ve seen. Mike Lamb hit an absolute bomb in the ninth.

The San Diego Chicken was there too, which I thought was hilarious at first. They overdid it though, keeping it around to do mid-inning things for pretty much the third inning on. The first few innings was funny but I got bored of it.

Montero’s unimpressive showing changes nothing. I still want him called up.

If you had a LHP and a RHP of equal quality, the LHP would be better against Lefty batters, in general. The problem is that there aren’t very many good LHP relievers, it’s hard to find one who is as good as a readily available RHP reliever. Boone Logan has really good stuff, LHP that throw 93 mph are pretty rare, which makes it so infuriating when he doesn’t perform well.

His K/9 rate against lefties is over 11, and his walk rate is 2.6, which is really really good, but he’s given up a 15% HR/FB rate too, which is killing him. That is mostly SSS, so I’d say he’s still a very good pitcher against lefties, but he does absolutely suck against RHB. 1.2 K/BB ratio against righties, so he has no business pitching to any RHB that is a decent hitter.

I wish Girardi realized Logan was a LOOGY and used him as one

People call Logan a LOOGY, but he hasn’t had that many games where he comes in for the lefty and then leaves lately. Girardi leaves him in for the inning and sometimes more, and when he gets into trouble thats often how it happens.

The bullpen pecking order should be something like this (if it matters).

Rivera-Soriano-Robertson-Noesi-Logan-Wade-Ayala. Thats if Soriano returns to last years form and has a lot of success. Otherwise, Robertson over him.

If Marte manages to get back, I’d take Ayala out.

I think your overating his ERA.

Ayala has pitch in mostly mop-up situations this year. There has been no pressure him at all. When he been given a chance in some close games that is when Ayala has been given up runs.

I really don’t have faith in him. I don’t think Girardi has faith in him either. Why else does Girardi not use Ayala for a week to 10 days and then use him in games like the 2 we had today?

by mkrozansky on Jul 30, 2011 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

it's not irrelevant

However, they don’t need one. And if they get a reliever, I’d rather they focus on whether he can pitch rather than what hand he throws with.

But, being the obsessive prospect hugger than I am, there aren’t that many good relievers out there worth trading prospects for, so I’m not sure this type of things would make sense.

Good thing we just acquired a Rafael Soriano for free.

no it's not

the quality of a pitcher is always more important, but changing the angle for the batter and having lefty on lefty can be an advantage sometimes simply because lefties don’t see it as often. If you have less practice seeing something it’s more difficult to hit.

I’m not saying it’s super important, but it isn’t completely irrelevant. There are some players who have big differences in their numbers against lefties compared to their numbers against righties.

The rockies got 3 of the top 10 indian prospects and 3 of their best pitching prospects. As good as montero is, he not worth that much.

Agree with the above commentators. Rockies got a nice package for him, although not as much as they were asking us for…

So now the guys in the subway are saying Jesus is coming on October 21, 2011, but that would mean he wouldn't be on the playoff roster, let alone be eligible for it. I really don't know where these guys are getting their information from...

you had nice seats man

I was in the second deck behind the first base dugout. But I still noticed Brackman and laughed.

I believe it was Brackman who went and beat up the chicken. Not sure though.

Got the same seats for tomorrow. And yes, Brackman was part of the group that sexually assaulted the chicken.

Hows your OPS? #YDYJIDMRT @KCPayne26: @Evan3Longoria Another hitless day, sporting a career-low .787 OPS and you’re boozing it up.

The response got a chuckle out of me.
@Evan3Longoria hmm I don’t play baseball. If I did, I wouldn’t be drinking the night before a game. But I’m starting to think I can hit .231

Please. Stick to fishing for guppies.
