Mid-Season Awards

Well, 81 games are done, and we find ourselves 3 games up in the loss column over the Red Sox.  Let's be honest, if someone told you at the beginning of the year that Phil Hughes would be DL'd almost the entire first half, that Derek Jeter would continue to decline, that Jorge Posada would play so poorly that people discussed cutting him, that Soriano would miss almost the entire first half, that Joba would have his season end with TJ surgery, and that Nick Swisher would only have 3 HR through the first 2 months of the season, would you have thought we'd be where we are right now?  The team has been saved by the likes of Bartolo Colon, David Robertson, Curtis Granderson, and Freddie Garcia's insane BABIP luck.  The following are my team awards for the first half.

Star-divide

Offensive Player of the Half-Year:  Curtis Granderson

Now this is the Curtis Granderson we all thought we were getting last year when the trade was made to bring him to NY.  Actually, no.  This is better than the guy we thought we were getting.  Curtis has a sparkling 158 wRC+, tied for 4th best in the AL.  The only CF in baseball out-hitting him is Matt Kemp, who is seeing some number inflation from BABIP.

Curtis' career high for HR is 30 back in 2009.  He's on pace to hit 44.  I remember one particularly smart PSA contributor saying that 40 HR from Granderson was very possible as he made the switch from Comerica to Yankee Stadium.  The biggest difference with Curtis has been his new-found ability to hit lefties.  He's sporting a 150 wRC+ against LHP so far this year, a far cry from his career 71 mark. Runner-Up:  Alex Rodriguez.

Defensive Player of the Half-Year:  Brett Gardner

This 4th outfielder, who also is a total rally killer, has a ridiculous 14.3 UZR compiled already, which translates to a whopping 34.8 UZR/150.  For those of you who would like more data to justify these numbers, his UZR/150 for last year was 31.8, so I think it's safe to say that he is ridiculous.  DRS agrees, and has him at a 14.  Beyond the stats, though, what have you seen?  Gardner runs down balls that I've never seen other outfielders get to.  You want to know why Garcia's ERA is so low?  You don't have to look much further than Brett Gardner.  GGBG is better at his position than anyone else in baseball, and if he doesn't win a Gold Glove this year, I will go on a crazed shooting spree.  Runner-Up:  Alex Rodriguez.

Fireman of the Half-Year:  David Robertson

Remember all the Jo-So-Mo talk at the beginning of the year?  People forgot the Ro part, who has been the best reliever on the team so far this year.  Robertson has the fourth lowest ERA among relievers in baseball with at least 20 IP, the third lowest FIP, and the third highest K/9.  He has been absolutely dominant, as the extra mph he has found on his fastball this year has turned a quality reliever into an almost unhittable one.  He's only blown 2 leads he was handed all year, and if I remember correctly, both times the runners were not his, he was coming in to try and clean up a mess.  Runner-Up:  Mariano Rivera.

Cy Young of the Half-Year:  CC Sabathia

As always, CC is the epitome of consistency.  He's out there throwing 7 or 8 innings every fifth day, and he's been great this year.  His 3.9 WAR is third among all starters in baseball.  His 129.1 IP is fourth in baseball.  His average Gamescore per start has been a 57, which is right in line with his average of 58 last year and 57 the year before.  Colon has arguably had a better first half in terms of his numbers, but the 50 IP discrepancy between them gives the award to CC. Runner-Up:  Bartolo Colon.

MVP of the Half-Year:  Curtis Granderson

When you combine the best hitter with above average defense at a premium position, you get your MVP of the half-year.  There's not much more I can say about Curtis that I didn't already above, so I'll take this space to talk about our runner-up, Alex Rodriguez.  Alex started the season red hot, with a 171 wRC+ through the end of April.  He cooled down in May, compiling just a 106, but heated back up to a 172 for the month of June.  The last time Arod has 2 months of 170+ wRC+ in a single season was 2008.  He didn't even have one month over 160 last year.  Along with his great offense, Arod has been playing fantastic defense, leading all major league 3B in UZR and DRS.  All these things combined suggest to me that Arod is the healthiest he's been in years, and he's finally getting used to playing third base.

It's been a good first half for us overall, and I have a feeling that after all the injuries and issues we've gone through, things can only go up from here.

Lots of runner ups for A-Rod lol

He’s doing everything so far this year except hitting home runs. And he’s getting a bit unlucky with that. He’s had a bunch that hit off the top of the wall both in April and this past week. He also hasn’t gone on a big HR streak yet that we know will come at some point.

One HR streak and he’ll be on pace for 32-35 HR, and be a legit MVP candidate too.

And Robertson is just a beast.

He’s hit 5, 4, and 4 HR by month, which is pretty consistent. You need to average 5 per month to get to 30, so Arod is still hovering around that. I expect him to reach 30 again this year.

So now the guys in the subway are saying Jesus is coming on October 21, 2011, but that would mean he wouldn't be on the playoff roster, let alone be eligible for it. I really don't know where these guys are getting their information from...

How can you make that statement?

Not saying he will or he won’t, but he’s just off the pace, and over his career he has a slightly better home run per at bat rate in the 2nd half than in the 1st half.

30?

He’s getting to 30. He always does.

If you want a comparison, last year he hit his 17th home run on August 4th (that was #600), and then he went on the DL from mid-August to early September. The result? He went on a HR tear through the last month of the season and ended with 30 home runs as always.

I would say he has 15 when we get to the break (I’m thinking he gets a couple over these last 7 games), and with no milestone to worry about and getting into the summer months where the ball carries very well he’ll probably get more.

Home run hitters always hit their homers in bunches. A-Rod hasn’t had his big streak yet (last year it didn’t come till September), but it’s going to come. The power is still there clearly and he’s hitting the ball well (over .400 over the last 50+ ABs), so sooner or later the balls will go over the fence.

He’s been the third best hitter, just 3 points behind Arod, the fourth best fielder for his position according to UZR (which, granted, is not the whole story for 1B, but UZR is rating him higher than DRS is), and tied with Gardner for 3rd best in overall WAR.

A-Rod's Homer Production

The last couple years we’re seeing what A-Rod w/out steroids is. He’s still a great player …… HOF material for sure. But ….. those steroid-boosted hits that carried the fences are now hitting the fence, carrying only to the warning track, etc. Bonds and A-Rod are both elite, superstar players who probably would have ended their respective careers with about 525 – 550 HR’s sans steroids. Their HR records, though, will always be fraudulent.

by Jeff I on Jul 3, 2011 8:33 PM EDT reply actions

Seems that its more so age and that hip injury

maybe he gets to 35-40 instead of 30-35…but who really cares. It doesn’t seem he’s hitting a bunch of warning track outs or a bunch hitting the walls tho. 99% of the time they’re flyouts anyway or cuz of the stadium he’s hitting in (like Saturday against Los Mets)

Maybe instead of steroids, it’s the fact that he’s 36 years old and can’t get the hips through consistently anymore due to a surgery he had?

CALL UP JESUS MONTERO!

by nyyrocks29 on Jul 3, 2011 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Arod already has 626 HR. It’s a pretty big stretch to say steroids helped him hit 76 extra HR in those 3 years in Texas, considering he hit over 50 in New York when they were testing. In his three years in Texas, he averaged 52 HR. In his 3 years prior and after Texas, he averaged 41. At least part of that 11 HR difference was due to playing half his games in Arlington. In fact, in 2002 he hit 34 of his HR at home, and just 23 on the road. Steroids got him a few more for sure, but I’m not willing to say it was much more than 5 per year, which means you might be fair in taking away 15 or 20 from his total. Keep in mind, Arod didn’t go bananas with the steroids like Bonds did. Bonds was taking massive amounts of Winstrol, which is a steroid they give to racing horses.

So now the guys in the subway are saying Jesus is coming on October 21, 2011, but that would mean he wouldn't be on the playoff roster, let alone be eligible for it. I really don't know where these guys are getting their information from...

by Wraithpk on Jul 3, 2011 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Not that it matters, but I’d say well more than 5 a year. Bonds hit 73, and what, 60+ a few more times, in AT&T Park. And there’s McGwire’s feats, Sosa’s feats. I’d say at least 10-15 a year, perhaps 20 or more in Bonds’ case.

I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?

by david d on Jul 3, 2011 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Did you read the last couple sentences? Not all steroids are the same, and the amount you take makes a difference too. Bonds noticeably grew in size over just a couple years. Winstrol will also give large strength boosts.

Okay, and Dianabol is every bit the steroid Winstrol is. And dosages matter too. It doesn’t matter, but to say what A-Rod would have or would not have done without steroids is all hypothetical and anybody’s “guess” about what would have happened without them is still nonsense.

I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?

by david d on Jul 4, 2011 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Arod’s production since they’ve been testing proves what he himself said: he never needed them. Those years in Texas were his age 25, 26, and 27 years. Considering what he did in NYC in the following years, and considering the HR boost that Arlington itself will give you, I just don’t think it’s reasonable to say that Arod got any more than about 10 HR a year from steroids, and I personally think that is a high estimate.

by lololol on Jul 5, 2011 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

oh, you’re right, I had them mixed up. Yeah, Primobolan is a pretty weak steroid in terms of strength boost, it’s more for fat burning. I remembered the steroid he used was a fat burner and not a strength one like Winstrol, which is why I don’t think he had a huge increase in HR from his. It’s different from Bonds, who took a steroid that gives you large strength and size bonuses.

We all have our opinions on the veracity of A-Rod’s public statements re: the timeframe in which he was taking steroids. Your premise is based on acceptance of A-Rod’s contention that he only took steroids for his three years in Texas. You may be right but …… I think there are many of us who have a harder time believing his steroid use was limited to this period. There are still too many inconsistencies in his public statements vs. other facts including his bizarre visits to Dr. Galea in Canada (one who distributed PED’s)……. to supposedly to deal with pain issues in the aftermath of his hip surgery. The doctor who treated him in Colorado for his hip injury has stated unequivocally that A-Rod was not having pain issues when released.

by Jeff I on Jul 4, 2011 1:09 PM EDT reply actions

So the doctor said Arod was not having pain in his hip a couple days after surgery? That sounds like BS to me. I had some really minor surgery to get a lypoma removed, and I had pain in the area for like a week to the point where they gave me a Tylenol/codeine painkiller.

So now the guys in the subway are saying Jesus is coming on October 21, 2011, but that would mean he wouldn't be on the playoff roster, let alone be eligible for it. I really don't know where these guys are getting their information from...

What is more believable

OK, Wraithpk, so you think it is more of a stretch to believe the primary physician who treated him for his hip surgery yet it doesn’t trouble you at all that A-Rod is cavorting with a physician (in Canada) who is a known distributor of PED’s? Like I said ….. I’m not saying I’m right with 100% certitude but …… I find your willingness to defend A-Rod even when other facts should at least raise a yellow flag a bit perplexing. We’d all like the HR record to belong to someone in pinstripes but …….. assuming A-Rod does break the record, it will feel completely tainted to me (as it has with Bonds holding the record).

by Jeff I on Jul 4, 2011 7:39 PM EDT reply actions

Has Arod tested positive for anything since those tests in 2004? No, he has not, or else he would have been suspended. Until he gets suspended for something, I’ll believe that what he’s done since Texas has all been legit.

by Jeff I on Jul 5, 2011 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

So were a lot of players. He tested positive in 2003. He volunteered the information that he took them from 2001-2003. There’s no proof of anything outside of that, so let’s not accuse him of further use without some evidence thereof.

Dr. Galea Pleads Guilty

Not sure if you saw the story today, Wraithpk, but Dr. Galea (who A-Rod ran to after being released in Colorado) pleaded guilty in Federal court today of bringing HGH and other unapproved drugs into the US. He also admitted to distributing these drugs to professional athletes (including professional baseball players) although no individuals were named.

Yes -— still not definitive proof but, at least to my sensibilities, it’s not too much of a stretch to connect the dots. What say you????

by Jeff I on Jul 6, 2011 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Right, lolol

Pretty flawless logic there as well, mate. Nobody came close to saying A-Rod was the only guy who would (or has ever) used steroids. I would say, though, that it is more than a little interesting that A-Rod would choose to visit Galea for treatment related to his hip when he was already tied into “legitimate” doctors handling that.

Your ability to accept any fairy tale is pretty amazing. On a related note, have you made out your Christmas list for Santa yet ????

by Jeff I on Jul 7, 2011 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

so… Arod going to a doctor known for treating high profile athletes like Tiger Woods for a reason other than Steroids is somehow a fairytale or something unbelievable? umm okay Galea specializes in a treatment and is well known to treat high profile athletes…which seems like a perfectly logically reason for someone who is a high profile athlete and needs the treatment to see him no? So Arod is now guilty by association? It doesn’t automatically mean the guy gave Arod HGH just because he is known to use it for other treatments. Also Galea isn’t exactly unconnected to the doctors who preformed Arod’s Hip Surgery, since he was an associate of one of the doctors who over saw Arod’s Hip survery/recovery.

Also if you believe this ESPN report:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=5198475
Arod doesn’t fit the timeline of the NY player (B) who was given HGH in his knee since in 2009, on July 30 the yankees were in Chicago, Sept 1. we were in Baltimore. Also Arod had hip problems and not knee problems….

So tell me whats more likely, the fact that Arod visited him for treatment because he specializes in it. Or Arod goes to him for HGH in the knee even though he had hip surgery and after admitting to roids earlier in the year?

A-Rod said he went to Galea for pain issues while his primary physician in Colorado stated publicly that by the time of his release, A-Rod was no longer dealing with any pain-related issues.

I’m sorry if I lean towards skepticism of a player who already lied publicly about steroid use until he was actually caught. And then …… even in his public confession, certain parts of the statement didn’t add up.

Dr Phillipon who did Arod’s surgery recommended Dr. Lindsay (who btw had ties to BALCO…obviously must mean he was prescribing roids too) as his overseer. Dr Lindsay is a known associate of Galea. While Dr. Phillipon did not know about Galea, it was not if Galea had no connection to Arod’s physicians. Phillipon never said anything about no hip pain btw, there is always some pain left after major surgery… Also it’s not like Arod is the first athlete to do something without the team’s knowledge…and what he claimed to do wasn’t even that big. Beltran had major knee surgery without the Mets knowledge. (Beltran is also has ties to Galea) Just because it’s a stupid move, doesn’t make him guilty automatically.

Me and Wraith are no ruling out maybe Arod did do something wrong. But with the current facts we know and what every party has found out so far, there is absolutely no proof Arod was given PED’s. The Feds haven’t found proof, neither has MLB. Until there is clear evidence and proof Arod did something wrong, it’s stupid to accuse him of doing so. What you’re doing is basically presenting circumstantial “evidence” and claiming to connect dots that might not be even be connected to try and show Arod was using HGH or something.

And the leader of the clique hands those out.

YankeeIntel said that was me, so good luck with that.

You already said I could be in the clique, you aren't allowed to take it back!

You must just not have reached platinum level yet

Myself, I am still striving for Tupperware level. I hear it comes with a salad spinner!

This

I haven’t checked with accounting but I’m pretty sure Wraith hasn’t accrued enough points to qualify for platinum yet.

that's not true

you have to toss your own salad in order to move up

I think

The runner up for Offensive Player of the Half-Year should be Teixera not A-Rod. He’s is having a decent year but Tex is having a break out league leading HR year.

by DWilll8 on Jul 6, 2011 11:02 AM EDT reply actions

how is Tex having a break out year?

he led the league in HRs already, so he’s done that before.

If he could only learn to drive the pitch on the outer half to the opposite field instead of trying to pull it, which inevitably ends up a grounder into the shift, he may become something some day.

I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?

he did that yesterday! keep asking him maybe he’ll do it more =P

Teixeira is hardly having a breakout year. Home run wise, he’s on track for the most of his career and RBI will be close. However, his batting average and on-base percentage are way off career highs he set in 2008.

A-Rod is having way more than a "decent" year, offensively.

He’s in a power slump right now, but he’s still very much hitting and hitting well.

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Jul 6, 2011 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

This

The power will come- just be patient with that.

Last year, A-Rod had 14 home runs at the All-Star break (he has 13 right now). But also last year, he had a huge power slump while he was pressing for 600 and then he went on the DL and missed two weeks shortly after. And yet, at the end of the season the HR total was still 30. If he stays healthy, there’s no reason why he won’t go off on a HR tear that we see every year out of him and finish with his usual power numbers.

After 81 games, Arod had a higher wRC+ by like 3 points. Right now, Tex is up by 2, and Robbie is just 5 behind him as well, so it’s close between those 3. I had to choose someone, though, and Arod was leading at the time.

Tex has been solid, but how is he any better than Granderson?

Unless you're a pitcher or Gustavo Molina, kindly SWING THE BAT and ignore the Binder's bunt signal.
