Game 82 Preview: Yankees vs. Mets
After defeating the cross-town "rivals" 5-2 yesterday, and for the fourth consecutive time this season, the Yankees look to sweep away the Mets before Derek Jeter rejoins the team in Cleveland.
Yankees starting lineup: 1) Brett Gardner LF, 2) Curtis Granderson CF, 3) Mark Teixeira 1B, 4) Alex Rodriguez 3B, 5) Robinson Cano 2B, 6) Nick Swisher RF, 7) Russell Martin C, 8) Ramiro Pena SS, 9) Freddy Garcia P
Mets starting lineup: 1) Angel Pagan CF, 2) Justin Turner 2B, 3) Carlos Beltran RF, 4) Daniel Murphy 3B, 5) Jason Bay LF, 6) Lucas Duda 1B, 7) Josh Thole C, 8) Ruben Tejada SS, 9) R.A. Dickey P
Today, Freddy Garcia will attempt to conjure up a correct balance of smoke and mirrors in order to beat the Mets. R.A. Dickey will oppose him.
Garcia is coming off a passable start at the stadium. He went 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and only striking out one. It's an understatement to say that the defense behind him and the bats picked him up. He had a great June, even despite his start against Boston, allowing only 10 runs in 28.1 innings (6 runs in 26.2 innings if you turn a bling eye to the Boston game).
Knuckleballer Dickey is also coming off of a fantastic June for a team that is expected to hover around the .500 plateau all season long. In his five games, he averaged 7.0 innings per outing and only 2 earned runs in each as well. Dickey pitched against the Yankees at the stadium earlier this season in the only game the Mets won, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing one run.
Notes:
1) A wild Lance Pendleton has appeared at Citi Field. A move is forthcoming. Yes, more mop-up men.
2) Eduardo Nunez is out of the lineup with a tight hamstring. It's a shame, he's playing fantastic baseball right now.
3) Here is your weather report for today's game. Looks like thunderstorms/rain on and off.
Game thread will be up at 1:00pm.

So…Are we now totally disregarding Sergio altogether? It’s probably for the best.
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?

Are Dickey's
numbers from May or June? A bit confused because you talked about Garcia’s June but Dickey’s May.
I apologize. Brandon’s post didn’t come out how it was supposed to and I typed this as fast as I could to get it out. It’s supposed to be his June. “May” is a typo.

You, on the other hand, Jeter, don’t deserve it and should give up your spot.

It's funny
In one of my one or two comments I’ve ever left at TwinkieTown, before the season even started I said Mauer should be put at 1st and Morneau should be the DH to help prevent injury and to prolong both of their careers. They, of course, shot me down and basically said it was an absurd idea. Long story short, I’ve noticed since the injuries to both they’ve all been screaming for this move.
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?
Haha. Go back and gloat if you feel like it.
Just kidding, but I can sense their reasoning. You want to bury your head in the sand on potential injuries.

And be ready to go in case somebody else gets hurt or implodes. They can’t send down Garcia.

they can send Garcia to the pen
since he’s better then any of the mops and also since Nova doesn’t deserve to ride the short bus in Scranton

And helping this team win.
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?
If you think it isn't fair to take Nova out because of the way he's been pitching
Then how is it fair to take out Garcia or Colon? They’ve both pitched just as well. Colon has been sort of like a second ace.
I would have gone with a six man rotation for at least a little while, and that didn’t happen. But I can understand why it was Nova who got sent down.

People don't like Garcia
Because of the way he gets some of his outs and the way he pitches. His line drive rate is a little too high, so he’s “getting lucky” to some extent.

Nova is better
Unless you're a pitcher or Gustavo Molina, kindly SWING THE BAT and ignore the Binder's bunt signal.
Look working the minors does not simply equate to accomplishing nothing. Hughes got send down and came back better in 2008, Halladay and Lee all have been sent down to the minors and they worked on their pitching and came back amazing. It’s not like Nova has nothing to work on. He can still work on command and his pitches in the minors being that he’s still young. I don;t get why every one hates the minors so much. You can improve in the minors as well…also it keeps the regular starter as a starter
Exactly
I don’t agree with sending Nova down because he was pitching so well but I can understand why it was him. And it’s not like sending him down to the minors is a complete waste of time for him. He’s still going to be starting, getting innings in, working on stuff and he’ll be ready to come back up if somebody gets hurt or implodes.
CALL UP JESUS MONTERO!
LoL, so we have to wait for Sergie Mitre to go from suck to blow before Nova is allowed to be on the ML roster?

Mitre and Nova play to different roles for the team. One is a mop up which we can replace easily, the other is our starter and maybe our future number 3-4 guy. Why keep nova up if he;s not going to make his regular starts. It’ll be even worse if we throw him in the pen. I rather have him make his regular starts and be brought up later when some one gets injured/pitches bad
You're right. We can replace mop-ups easily.
His name is Garcia, who was only holding Hughes spot in the ro-ro. Instead of letting Nova grow and learn in the major leagues with a very good team & bullpen behind him, we now have to wait for someone to suck enough before he gets to grow again.

So we simply throw garcia away? Look i hate i know Garcia is all smoke and minors as much as the next guy and i know he as an absurd line drive rate, but we’re not going to throw him in the pen. i mean if you go by his value, Garcia is our 3rd most valuable starter this year, higher than AJ and Nova. So why move him to an place where his value is the least? We can;t DFA him, moving him to the pen isn’t goign to maximize his vale as of now…so freddy is hard to move around. While Nova is easy to send down and bring back up. It’s not fair but that’s how it works. Hughes needs a spot and Nova was the most convenient to move.
Yes. We put him in the bullpen, where he started
It’s called building for the future. Freddy Garcia starting over Nova does not do that at all.

Garcia was our 5th starter since the end of Spring and he as been above league average. Nova is still pitching. getting sent to the minors is not a death sentence. He has a better chance of developing pitches in the minors than the majors where the batters will crush any sub par pitch.
And the only reason he became our #5 is because...
Hughes was terrible.

Mitre is a MOP UP pitcher
He’s not pitching any meaningful innings whatsoever. Would you rather have Nova taking Mitre’s spot and pitching non-meaningful innings, or getting regular starts in the minor leagues?
Being on the roster has nothing to do with it. Just because Mitre is in the majors doesn’t mean the front office thinks he’s better than Nova.
CALL UP JESUS MONTERO!
See directly above.
It has NOTHING to do with Nova going to the pen. It has to do with once again, not allowing a young pitcher to grow, to develop, to learn how to face major league batters on a team in which he has a good chance to do so, considering how they are playing.
It’s moves like this why I hate the Yankees “MUST WIN THIS YEAR NOW ABOVE EVERYTHING ELSE” mentality which goes towards screwing over or trading young prospects. It’s reasoning like this why Jesus Montero is not platooning with Martin right now. It’s reasons like this why he MIGHT be traded.

i think they want nova to stay sharp
in the minors so that he is ready when a starter gets hurt or ineffective and no garcia hasnt been ineffective and nova has probably been better than garcia of late, but if they demote garcia they lose him forever potentially to a team like the red sox or rays or rangers
Lose him forev...
You just put him back in the bullpen where he started. I’d much rather him him there than McChestington or fucking Mitre. He still gets paid the same, and if Hughes or Nova start faltering immensely, you move him out of the bullpen and back into the ro-ro. He’s a veteran, so I don’t think he’d have a problem with that.

There are going to be a lot of warm and fuzzy feelings surrounding the team this week. Jeter’s probably going to get to 3000 this week, hopefully at home on Thursday. We have at least 6 All Stars. And we’re going to go into the All Star break hopefully with a lead over the Red Sox, but no worse than a game or two out. So there are a lot of good things going on.
But it’s past time to accept that this team has absolutely no idea how to handle young players. Unless a guy comes up and has immediate, complete and total success, he gets shuffled around and loses time to replacement-level mop-up men. There’s no earthly reason why Nova should be in AAA while Sergio Mitre gets another go-round. And I understand the desire to win now, but guess what? We ARE winning now! We have one of the three best teams in baseball, and are almost certain to make the playoffs. But instead of developing Nova so he can be a steady part of our rotation for the next year, we’re going to give the rotation spot to Garcia, who’s not going to get any better, and give a roster spot to Mitre, who was treading water in the NL. This franchise does a lot of things right, but they have no idea how to handle young players. And we have a strong farm system that has the potential to provide a lot of quality players for the next decade, if someone can figure out how to get them into the big leagues. I have very little faith that Cashman and Girardi can do that.
by long time listener on Jul 3, 2011 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
because Mitre is mopping up and we’re not going to have Nova play mop up duties…We want him to start because we think he’s a future starter. By sending him to the minors he gets his starts in in case someone implodes or gets injured. And getting rid of garcia is not a good idea since he …umm starts today and the FO cares more about the results (shiny ERA) than the peripherals.
Nova should start, Garcia should relieve

What about his development?
Or his confidence? There is nothing positive about sending him back to AAA. He’s been progressing well and is learning to pitch better and better against MLB hitters.
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?
maybe it’ll motivate him to get even better to prove he;s better than Garcia, or he can mope…i don’t know. And progression wise he can work on things in the minors suck as command and developing all his pitches.
Or he could do what he's been doing
Learning to do that with major league batters with a monster lineup and decent bullpen to back him up while he learns these things.

Not every team has a fanbase voting in their replacement level shortstop to start, so the Royals needed somebody. It should have been Gordon for the outfield.

also why not name cc
an all star knowing he cant pitch in the game and then give his spot to someone else like valverde
and i think they sent down
nova so that he can still start and get his innings and be SHARp in case anyone else gets hurt. being in the bullpen doesnt really help garcia or nova stay sharp in case they need to start since they would either be pitching 1 inning at a time or once every 2 weeks. id rather have nova get innings in the minors so that he is ready once one of the starters becomes ineffective or hurt. and while garcia isnt pitching great he hasnt been terrible where he deserves to be off the team totally.
and also why isnt jesus montero on this team, please cashman please
I just read via text message that
Hughes was activated and Nova was optioned to AAA.

Andrew McCutchen is not an All-Star
O_O
Unless you're a pitcher or Gustavo Molina, kindly SWING THE BAT and ignore the Binder's bunt signal.
How is Tex
not on the final vote. Being tied for the league lead ini home runs just doesnt do it. And his average is low, but also a low babip. if tex was batting .285 instead of 255 he would have made it
Joel Hanrahan
Unless you're a pitcher or Gustavo Molina, kindly SWING THE BAT and ignore the Binder's bunt signal.
Two players from one team can make it you know…
Unless you're a pitcher or Gustavo Molina, kindly SWING THE BAT and ignore the Binder's bunt signal.
i never said
mccutchen shouldnt be on team, just that hanrahan is deserving of the selection. he has probably been the best closer in the national league
fine
but
hanrahan >>>>> every other close in the national league
Yeah, Kimbrel is AWFUL.

kimbrel isnt even the
best reliever on his own team
Results say he's pretty friggin good.
So I wouldn’t go so far as to say that anyone is >>>>>>>> than him.

24 for 24 in save chances
for hanrahan that is what got him onto the team
No one is saying Hanrahan hasn't been good.
But he hasn’t been far and away better than every other National League closer like you are suggesting. You said Kimbrel wasn’t even the best on his team, and the numbers posted above disprove that.

thats not what I said
just seems like people are getting upset over it. It’s not that important. There are snubs every year.

i hope Washington is smart and give CC a nod when someone else pitches like Girardi did
Even though CC has been better than 4 of those 5 starters. Only Weaver this year has been more valuable
I just realized Craig Kimbrel got left off the NL roster. LOL All-Star Game

He’ll probably use him for 3 innings. Trying to make him the next Robb Nen.

Bochy overuses Wilson badly, kind of like how Dusty used Robb Nen until his arm just gave out.

It’s funny to me how almost everybody here in the past talked about how stupid the AS Game is yet now everybody is complaining about the team.
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?
It's stupid for the reasons everyone is complaining about.
The voting is a complete joke.

the manager's/player's picks aren't helping either
Washington is just stroking his own Rangers…remember last year when arod got picked by Girardi and there was a whole up roar because Arod had been Good but not great? CJ and Young gets picked over more deserving guys, but i bet there’s less uproar for that.
All of it is a huge joke.
The fact that it actually counts for something is beyond moronic.
