Ubaldo! Shields! King Felix!
We need to make a trade for these guys!! We need to trade Montero before its too late!!! Okay with that out of the way, I see a player that could be a nice fit. His name, Reed Johnson.
Johnson is making $900,000 this year and becomes a FA after the season, so there is no long term investment. WIth regards to the beloved Andruw Jones, I see Johnson as the perfect 4th OF who is killing lefties this season. With an OBP of .369 and a OPS of .924 he has to worth a lesser spect. Sometimes we get caught up in making the big superstar move that we forget about the moves with role players that really make the difference.

Reed would make a good acquisition in the offseason for the 4th OF spot
I dunno about a trade since I’m not sure what I’d give up for him. Obviously it’d have to be something of worth since his contract is very reasonable. But he would be a good get.

Sometimes I think these posts are a cry for attention
How anyone with half a brain could think Johnson is a better option over Gardner is beyond me.
Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.
Sorry, I'm not one of them. Although, I will add...
that for some on here I think you’re right.
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?
Maybe true but how can you think Reed Johnson over Gardner is a smart choice?
Forget about the bats, how about the defense?

Reed Johnson is exactly a 4th outfielder. He only gets in games because he plays in the NL and pinch hits for the pitcher. Otherwise he only starts against LH’ers.
He has 62 PA against lefties in only 23 games, but 88 PA against righties in 51 games. If the Cubs thought he would be useful against righties, he’d start.
So, he’s a platoon player/4th outfielder. The Yankees have an elite option in left field.

His value is strictly off the bench against lefties
To think he should start over any of the three starting OFs we have is completely nuts.

Yup. He still doesn’t walk and he’s benefiting from a nice career high in BABIP. Though that correlates with a higher line drive percentage, history suggests he’s not a 20% line drive hitter.

Sometimes you say the dumbest things
How did I make it sound like a “world of difference”? Did I say “Melky’s waaaaayyyy better because his OPS is highher”? No, I just said his OPS is higher. And yes, I’d take the season Melky is having this year over Gardner. But quit putting your own feelings into other people’s comments. Or grow up.

Even if he could, Either is basically Brett Gardner with a worse defense, no steals and a bigger name.

Melky was alright for what he was as a Yankee but not anything Id want back as a starter
If Ethier played to his talent, Id take him over Gardner but he seldom does so Im fine with Gardner and his better defense.

Gordon and More are not better, and neither is Melky. You’re conveniently forgetting the years Gordon and Melky have had in the past.
Melky literally cost the Braves a win last year (-1 WAR) and Gordon was negative too (-0.4). Add in the fact that Gardner is arguably the best defensive player in baseball and its not even close.

The past?
Good Lord. Now we’re throwing in the past? So maddux was not any good because of what he did in ‘87 and ’88. Or Koufax wasn’t really good because of what he did in ’55 or ’56. Sheesh. If a guy is not a yankee, you criticize him.
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?
You said they “are better” then Gardner. It would be silly to only take a 100 game sample and ignore their past accomplioshments when comparing players.
That’s not criticism, I gave you facts. It only looks like criticism because they don’t support what you tried to say and because their stats were awful.

To elaborate the point that's already implied
Your comparisons to other years are NOT AT ALL the same as Frankie’s comparisons. Frankie’s comparing to the past couple years, not some random point in a veteran’s career that was years ago. To get an idea of these players’ skillset, you can’t just look at this year’s results. Check the past couple years to see how they’ve done too. Maybe they’re just having a randomly good year (for example, if you were looking at Brady Anderson before the ‘98 season, you would look at the past few years and then randomly see his 50 HR ’96 season. That’s the anomaly.)
No one would make the insane comparisons you’re claiming we’re making (i.e. Maddux isn’t good because he wasn’t good in some random year in the ’80s.). These are comparing players to the past couple years, not some random point in time.
Unless you're a pitcher or Gustavo Molina, kindly SWING THE BAT and ignore the Binder's bunt signal.
My point was
in 1989, by his analysis, the Cubs should have just said “this guy has had a couple bad years, he must suck.” Though, that IS the Yankee way, isn’t it. Just because Melky and Gordon HAD mediocre years (all players have them at some point in their careers) doesn’t mean when they have a good one it’s meaningless.
And you couldn’t just respond this way in the first place instead of calling me a fool? And you tell me “stay classy”? Dude…
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?

Would definitely be an upgrade over Andruw Jones. I wouldn’t give up too much to get him since it’s a 4th outfielder and a two month rental, but I’d certainly be interested.
Now lets trade Montero, Banuelos, Betances, Nova, Phelps, Warren, Nunez, Sanchez and Romine to the Red Sox for the playoff proven, experienced John Lackey (PSA would explode)!!!

It wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up with the Yankees. Despite the fact that his contract is very reasonable, Chicago isn’t competing for anything and they mind as well trade him for some sort of value instead of holding him in a pursuit of fourth or fifth place.
My one concern is that he doesn’t walk much.

How quickly we forget all the spectacular catches vs walls, jumping over fences,
very good arm strength & the quickest release in throwing the ball of anyone in
MLB. That’s Melky- he’s still just a 4th OFielder type, but he is a human highlight film
both defensively and throwing the ball. Gets a lot of assists as a an OF guy. You just
don’t run on Melky.

Once had 19 assists in a season as an OF. The reason for the high total? The guy had a below average arm and people ran on him all the time. High assist totals on an outfielder just as often signal a willingness to run on a guy’s arm as they signal a mark of throwing excellence.
