Soon to be aquired J.C. Romero
According to ESPN.com's Buster Olney the Nationals minor league pitcher and former Philly J.C. Romero will opt out of his contract on July 15 to sign with the Yankees. Though the Nationals could still call him up before then it appears to be a done deal. This would be a huge upgrade over the Non-LOOGY, LOOGY that is Boone Logan. Romero is a lefty specialist and should only be used that way. Here's a look at what Romero has done against the AL East's lefty batters over his career, also against some of the tougher lefties in the Majors.
David Ortiz: 9 PA .375/.444/.500 line with no homers and one strikeout.
Jason Varitek: 9 PA .000/.222/.000 line with three strikeouts.(Switch hitter)
J.D. Drew: 6 PA .200/.333/.200 line with no homers and one strikeout.
Adrian Gonzalez: 5 PA .000/.200/.000 line with one strikeout.
Jacoby Ellsbury: 4 PA .250/.250/.1000 the one hit being a home run to go alone with three strikeouts.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia: 2 PA with nothing to show for it expect two strikeouts, he's also a switch hitter.
Next will be the team that I think has the only chance of taking the Wild Card from the Yanks/Sox, the Tampa Bay Rays. Who are four games back of the Yankees.
Johnny Damon: 20 PA .235/.316/.235 line with no homers and one strikeout.
Casey Kotchman: 3 PA with nothing to show for it
Ben Zobrist: 2 PA with only a walk to his credit.(Switch Hitter)
The Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays have had up and down seasons, but it looks like they will both have to look forward to next year, especially Buck's O's. Romero has only faced a few Jay's and O's so ill just put them together.
Nick Markakis: 5 PA .200/.200/.400 line inucluding a double and a strikeout.
Adam Lind: 4 PA .667/.500/.667 line with a sac fly.
Corey Patterson: 3 PA .333/.333/.333 line with two strikeouts.
Due to the very small sample sizes of the AL East lefties, I wanted to show that Romero can get out tough lefties at a consistent basis. So here's a list on how he has done against them.
Carlos Beltran: 29 PA .192/.276/.308 line with no homers and eight strikeouts.(Switch Hitter)
Carlos Delgado: 22 PA .158/.273/.211 line with no homers and five strikeouts.
Raul Ibanez: 22 PA .136/.136/.182 line with no homers and one strikeout.
Brian McCann: 21 PA .056/.190/.111 line with no homers and five strikeouts.
Carlos Pena: 14 PA .167/.286/.333 line with no homers and five strikeouts.
Luis Castillo: 12 PA .000/.167/.000 line with 2 strikeouts.
From the looks of it Romero does give up some walks to lefties over his career but he minimizes the damage by keeping the ball in the park against them, only giving up 13 homers in over 1000 PA.His numbers only look bad this year because he has faced more right handed hitters then lefties. In 29 PA against lefties this season he has a .208/.321/.208 line very similar to his overall line for his career .215/.312/.290. Compare that to right handed batters .268/.382/.426 and we see Girardi will need to use his almighty notebook, using Romero only for lefties. This should give the Yankees exactly what they need, a lefty who gets lefties out.Sorry Boone.(Thanks to Baseball_Reference for the stats)

Super Loogy
Career line vs lefties : 8.23 k/9 3.98 BB/9 3.46 FIP 3.58 xFIP
Vs righties: 6.64 k/9 6.94 bb/9 5.25 FIP 5.42 xFIP
Somehow i bet if he comes up Girardi isn’t going to use him simply as a Loogy
Even his numbers against righthanders make him a better bet than Mitre.
Damn. I swore I wouldn’t post any more nasty comments about him.
