Yanks Keep Rolling in Subway Opener, Top Mets 5-1
When you're playing good baseball, this is how you build winning streaks.
It's not always going to be flashy, there won't always be tape-measure blasts or 13-strikeout efforts. Sometimes you just grind it out, which is exactly what the Yankees did in a 5-1 win over the Mets in the opener at Citi Field on Friday night.
The Yankees have now won six straight. They are 15-4 since being swept at home by the Red Sox last month.
It might not go down as the most memorable game in Subway Series history, but that doesn't matter to the Yankees, who maintain their 2.5-game lead in the AL East.
The Yankees jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and stayed ahead the rest of the way. Mark Teixeira continued to be a monster run-producer, driving in two runs with a double of losing pitcher Jonathan Niese. Robinson Cano drove in Teixeira with another double.
Ivan Nova wasn't particularly sharp, but he pitched effectively with men on base to pick up his eighth win of the season. He allowed one run on seven hits in five innings, throwing 89 pitches.
He could've went deeper, but Joe Girardi lifted the right-hander for pinch-hitter Jorge Posada in a bases-loaded situation in the top of the sixth (Posada struck out). Girardi then used six different pitchers to take the Yankees home, including the downright baffling decision to summon Mariano Rivera in a non-save situation in the ninth.
(You cannot tell me The Binder said that was the right move.)
The most memorable moment in the game occurred in the seventh inning. With the Yankees leading 3-1, Jose Reyes (2-for-5, .352) led off the frame with a single off Cory Wade. Justin Turner followed with a flyball to deep center that was caught by Curtis Granderson. Reyes tagged and slid safely into second, and when Eduardo Nunez didn't field the relay cleanly, Reyes took off for third. Nunez's strong throw beat Reyes to the bag and Rodriguez tagged out Reyes to complete a double play.
At least according to home-plate umpire Jerry Layne, who had rotated over to the bag to make the call. Replays were inconclusive, though the SNY crew were absolutely certain Reyes had evaded the tag. (I think Keith Hernandez's head exploded at one point.) It would be the last time the Mets threatened in the game.
The seven Yankees pitchers allowed 10 hits, but the Mets were never able to get a big hit when it counted, dropping their record back to .500 at 41-41 in the process. The Yankees are now 49-31, which trails only the Philadelphia Phillies for the best record in baseball.
Stray observations:
- That high wall in left-center field at Citi Field is a joke. A-Rod hit an absolute bomb in the ninth inning that would've been a homer in any other park in the league. Instead, he had to settle for an RBI double. The Mets will have difficulty signing power hitters for generations unless they make changes to the dimensions.
- Nunez might be a mess defensively, but the young man can hit. The shortstop had his best day as a pro, going 4-for-4 to bump his average from .234 to .261.
- The game marked the largest crowd in Citi Field history with 42,020 paid customers. This is why interleague play will never disappear.
- Speaking of attendance, according to an unscientific estimate by WFAN mid-day guy and Met die hard Evan Roberts, the crowd was only 55/45 in favor of the Mets.
- "That's three." -- A-Rod to Teixeira after the game. Tex saved A-Rod three errors on low throws tonight. To A-Rod's credit, he made a couple of great throws as well. Busy night at the hot corner.
- Just for fun, here are the Yankees' record through July 1 the past five years — 2010: 48-30; 2009: 45-32; 2008: 44-40; 2007: 38-41; 2006: 45-33.

That was the season when they were trailing the Red Sox until like the last day of the season.

Ok, I had to go on fangraphs to verify, it’s 2005 I’m thinking of, lol. We were behind by quite a lot most of that year, and tied them right at the end, and won the division because we won the season series

Was that the year they blew home field for the ALDS?
I remember they didn’t pitch Mussina in the last game of the season because they wanted to save him for Game 1, so they pitched Jaret Wright and he got bombed, and then they were in Anaheim 3 games out of 5.
It worked since Mussina won game 1, but it didn’t help that they had to play the elimination game in LA either.

The dimensions of Citi field wouldn’t be a problem for them if they had great pitching and guys with good speed in the outfield. What they have, though, is a slow power hitter in left, a guy with two reconstructed knees in right, and a weak rotation (sans Santana). They need to develop with an eye towards speed and pitching, because power hitters won’t work in their park.

They kind of killed Bay and Wright. They need to find a way to keep Reyes, though, he’s perfect for that park.

Yeah, this is what I really think
As a Mets fan, I don’t mind the dimensions, but with every part of the park so deep, just having an average wall in left would do wonders. I love everything about the park except that wall’s height.
You think it's the height of the wall or the dimensions that have messed with Bay's head?
Or both? Because this park has completely destroyed any power he had with Boston.
CALL UP JESUS MONTERO!
Jeff Francour was on the Michael Kay radio show a while back, and he said playing there was deflating because you would hit balls that should be HR’s, and they are fly-outs in Citi field. He agreed that they need to lower the wall in left.

Yeah, I wouldn't listen to Jeff Francoeur about anything baseball related.
He’s one of the biggest babies in the game and can’t realize that it wasn’t the park that caused him not to hit homers, it’s that he’s terrible at baseball. If it wasn’t for those first few weeks of his career and that SI cover where they dubbed him “The Natural,” he would have been out of baseball two years ago.
Oh, I agree that he’s pretty bad, but I doubt it’s just him that thinks that.

Fair enough
But it sounds to me like he’s just trying to make excuses for his poor play. David Wright managed to hit 29 homers last season, 12 at Citi, so it’s not as soul crushing as many make it out to be.
Perhaps. The Mets built a pitcher friendly park, though, and they don’t have strong starting pitching, outside of the injured Santana, so the park does not play to their strengths. They need to recruit good pitchers and get some fast outfielders in the future to optimize their home field advantage.

True
You always need a home run threat though. Hopefully Ike Davis can become that in the future since all his homers seem to be monstrous. Getting speedy player for the sake of getting speedy players would not be smart, but they do need to get outfielders who can get good jumps and cover a good amount of ground. Pagan is an excellent defender, and Beltran has been solid in right field. Even bay has been pretty good in left this season. DRS has him at +8 while UZR has him at a more average-ish +0.9. You don’t have to be fast to be an above average fielder. Although if you want to send us Gardner for Bay…
The Mets financial situation is a real shame. Prince Fielder would have been perfect for them. Put Prince at first, and move Ike to right field. Prince has plenty enough power to clear the walls at Citi field.

With Davis,
I don’t see a need for Prince. Ike won’t be the offensive presence Prince is, but he should be a very good hitter and is one of the best defensive first basemen in baseball already.
imagine if you had them both, though. It's moot, though, cause the Mets need pitching.
So now the guys in the subway are saying Jesus is coming on October 21, 2011, but that would mean he wouldn't be on the playoff roster, let alone be eligible for it. I really don't know where these guys are getting their information from...
Hopefully by 2013, at least one Harvey, Mejia and Familia distinguish themselves
as top of the rotation pitchers.
I guess you could throw Davis in right and put Prince at first, but I don’t think Prince will be worth the contract he gets. He’s really huge and can see him deteriorating over the course of a 6 or 7 year deal.
He's a vegetarian
Which really, I only think is possible because his veggie blend consists of some leafy greens and about 2 bottles of blue cheese.
Personally, if I’m the Mets, I stick with Ike Davis. He shows a lot of promise with his swing, and his defense is pretty good as well. I’d worry more about a catcher, pitching, and probably a better outfield.

I honestly don't know. I think it's more that Bay had a rapid decline than anything mental.
I’m sure the players have tried to compensate, but Bay has just been horrid all around since he’s been a Met.
Thats why they have to find a way to keep Reyes if they can
The man is a perfect fit for that place like you said, and he’s an All-Star shortstop who is young and is a good guy to build your lineup around.
Speed, defense and pitching. Thats what the Mets need to look at, because this park is going to destroy power hitters unless it’s a guy who hits no doubters like A-Rod (who hit today what would be a no-doubter in any other park).
CALL UP JESUS MONTERO!
The only way they can keep Reyes is if they find someone who will take Jason Bay if they basically give them David Wright for free. If they do that, combined with K-Rod’s contract (hopefully for them) coming off the books, they will have the money to sign him. Otherwise, they can’t do it.
So now the guys in the subway are saying Jesus is coming on October 21, 2011, but that would mean he wouldn't be on the playoff roster, let alone be eligible for it. I really don't know where these guys are getting their information from...
Or hope that someone will take Bay hoping that his power comes back with a change of scenery
If they could find a way to dump both Bay and Wright for prospects, then with the expiring contracts they should be able to build around Reyes and go from there. Unlikely, but not out of the question. We’ll see what they do.
CALL UP JESUS MONTERO!
They won’t get much for Bay + Wright. The negative value of Bay almost equals the positive value of Wright. If they can dump them, though, they have a shot to sign Reyes, so that is their best option.

I think they could get a lot for Wright.
He’s still young and when healthy he’s damn good.
But Bay is an albatross, one of the least moveable players in baseball IMO.
Yeah, which is why Wright + Bay is almost a wash. They won’t get much back in return if they get someone to take Bay.

Or they can just backload the contract a bit
I’d be shocked if Jose Reyes isn’t a Met unless someone offers a $150+ million contract
I think the Reds should try to trade for him if he's made available this year.

I don't think LA has a shot unless they get a new owner in there quick
And I don’t know the Giants finances too well. But as long as the Yankees and Sox don’t get into the bidding, I don’t think it will get too high. And Jose has indicated in the past he would like to stay in New York, so hopefully he’d take a bit of a discount.
I doubt he takes a discount. Every player says that line about how they would like to stay where they are, it’s just a PR move. The Mets will have to outbid other teams to get him, and that’s only possible if they can move the contracts of Wright and Bay.

K-rod has a $17.5 million vesting option looming
It vests if he finished 55 games this season, which seems like an inevitability. If they can get rid of K-rod’s contract next season, they’ll have plenty of money for Reyes. It’s seeming more and more likely though that it will vest. It’s why every Met fan cringes when K-rod comes in to close out a non-save situation or pitches the last inning when the Mets are losing by a lot anyway.
they have to be planning to trade him. It would be stupid to let that option vest otherwise

in hindsight they should've stood away from Bay and signed Crawford
tho they should’ve done a lot more then that.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
They should have signed Holliday instead of trying to save a couple million by signing Bay.

waiting for Crawford would have been better
Crawford and Reyes at the top of the lineup in this ballpark? Those are more of the type of players they need to build around. Defense and speed, because slow power hitters aren’t working out.
CALL UP JESUS MONTERO!
they were coming off an embarrassingly bad year when they signed Bay
I think it was the pressure of that horrible season that pushed them to that move, even though it wasn’t smart. Now they’re stuck with a slow outfielder who has lost his HR ability.
CALL UP JESUS MONTERO!
Yeah, but Matt Holliday was also available. They signed Bay because they could get him for 16 mil, and the word on Holliday was that it would take around 22 mil. Then, Holliday ended up signing for 17 a year, sooooooo yeah……..

I wouldn't be surprised if Holliday would have been more for the Mets than anyone else
It’s totally possible he just didn’t want to play there, since they were coming off an awful year and had a park that is best for a player that is opposite of the type of player Matt Holliday is.
CALL UP JESUS MONTERO!
For 8 years though
That’s a long commitment. The Mets would have been better off not signing anyone and having that extra money right now.
Holliday is a pretty good player… who knows if he’d still be worth it after 8 years, but he wouldn’t be much worse than Bay already is now.

Oh yeah, I wanted Holliday big time
I know most people at AA, including myself, weren’t enamored with the Bay signing. I knew Holliday would be better, but no one thought Bay would be this terrible.
The Mets are my third favorite team, I tend to root for most New York teams (except the Giants…). I REALLY wanted the Yankees to go for Holliday because I thought he was the real deal. Gardner has ended up working very well, though, so turns out we really didn’t need him. When I saw the Mets took Bay over Holliday, though, I thought that was a huge mistake. Holliday had slightly better offensive numbers, and he was a much much better defender.

I'm the same way, I root for New York
Except the Yankees are my ∞th favorite team, lol.
Holliday is a great all around player. The Mets would be a much better team right now if you added him into the lineup. If you throw his numbers in there over Bay, and a healthy Wright and Davis, the Mets are one of the best offense in the NL, I would think.
Don’t hate us cause we’re beautiful. I just hate the Giants because I was a Cowboys fan as a kid.

I agreed with the move to pinch hit for Nova
The guy was struggling a little bit and he wasn’t going to go that much longer anyways. It’s a perfect opportunity to break the game open, so I think you have to go for it. It didn’t work out and they needed the bullpen, but the bullpen did a nice job. I’ve been really impressed with Logan recently- since A-Rod talked to him he’s been a different pitcher. He’s attacking hitters with his stuff and he looks so much more confident. And that was a nice bunt he laid down too.
The A-Rod one really ticks me off- thats a no doubt home run in any other park and it went at least 400 feet if not 10-20 feet further. Not only is that insanely deep but it also includes a huge high wall? No wonder power hitters don’t want to play here. And it’s not like it’s much for for lefties either, because right field is tough too. Alex is going to hit his home runs and he’s going to have 30+ by the end of the year, but it seems like he’s hit a lot that just go off the top of the wall- he’s been very unlucky when it comes to homers this year. But he’s still hitting the living shit out of the ball so it’s all good.
Great win. Take the series tomorrow (don’t hurt yourself Bartolo), sweep on Sunday, resume the hunt for 3000 on Monday. Go Yankees.

Despite Lupica's best efforts
Yanks = Yanks and Mets =… well, Mets.
Case in point “Girardi called on Mariano Rivera to face Reyes in the ninth with a runner on first and the Yankees leading 5-1. Reyes grounded out to third.”
G.O.A.T > Good this year
Period.
Jose Reyes is
a) more that “good” this year, and b) has been more than “good” whenever he’s been healthy. Since 2006, he’s been the second most valuable shortstop in baseball behind Hanley, and that includes a 2009 where he barely played and a 2010 where he got off to a slow start last season.
Sure Mo is probably the greatest per inning pitcher ever, but that’s no reason to make like Jose hasn’t been a spectacular player in his own right.
Reyes is a great player when he’s healthy. I’d rather have Tulo because he’s better all around, but Reyes is up there with Hanley for next best SS (although Hanley is really scuffling this year…)
So now the guys in the subway are saying Jesus is coming on October 21, 2011, but that would mean he wouldn't be on the playoff roster, let alone be eligible for it. I really don't know where these guys are getting their information from...
Tulo's a fantastic player and probably the best of the three going forward, unless Hanley gets back on track,
But Reyes’s three best seasons have been more valuable than Tulo’s three best. Anyway you look at it, I’d say those are the three top shortstops for the next few seasons.
He and Wright both have been elite.
I believe only Pujols had more WAR than Wright from 2007 through 2008. It’s too bad that they have run into some bad luck/injuries/bad defense the last two years.
Well, with Wright it's something else
He went from being one of the top 5 guys in baseball from 2005-2008, to being unable to distinguish pitches at the plate. He lost his power in 2009, he BB% dropped last season, even if he can just bat ~.280, 25+ homers and a 12% BB%, he’d be elite again, but I’m not sure he can do that anymore. A part of me is hoping this stress fracture he has happened in April of 2009, and that when he comes back, he’ll return to that awesome David Wright of 07 & 08. He’s still a very valuable player, and one of the best third baseman in baseball, but as you said, he used to be one of the best player in baseball.
his 2010 is puzzling. The best explanation I’ve heard is that the Mets as an organization were telling their players to take an opposite field approach, which would explain his huge power drop.
So now the guys in the subway are saying Jesus is coming on October 21, 2011, but that would mean he wouldn't be on the playoff roster, let alone be eligible for it. I really don't know where these guys are getting their information from...
I assume you mean 2009.
And yeah, that coaching staff was terrible. Why would you mess with Wright’s swing at all after the seasons he had? Even if you think he would lose some homers, don’t adjust until you know for sure. At worst he’d still rack up a ton of doubles.
I would back away from calling anybody elses field a "joke"
Considering our RF is a pitching wedge away.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
I think both types of whining are lame. Whenever Mets fans complain about YSIII or give the favorite line of “that wouldn’t be a home run in Citi Field” it’s easy enough to dismiss because a) we’re not playing in Citi Field and b) both teams are swinging for the same fence. It inflates our batters (mainly LHB) and deflates our pitchers (mainly RHP), but every ballpark has some effect on the results.
By that same logic, whining about A-Rod crushing a ball and having it not make it out of Citi Field is exactly the same. Our pitchers have the ability to pipe fastballs and know that it’s going to take an absolute rocket to make it out of the park when we play in Citi Field.

Well, the good people over at AA kind of pulled what I wrote out of context. I didn’t actually say I thought Reyes was out, I just said that was the call and that it was way too close for the SNY folk to get all worked up about it like the Mets got screwed over.
As for my comments about Citi Field’s dimensions, I stand by it. Flippin’ ridiculous. That said, they shouldn’t assume I think YSIII dimensions are awesome because they ain’t.
