Game 77 Preview: Brewers at Yankees
For the first time since 1997, the Brewers are coming to the Bronx. Taking the mound for the Brew Crew will be Zack Greinke, whose peripherals show that he has been a much better pitcher than his 4.77 ERA indicates. On the season, Greinke owns a 2.30 FIP, a 1.84 xFIP, a dominant 11.93 K/9, and an equally impressive 1.34 BB/9. In ten outings, Greinke has six quality starts, including a gem against the Rays in his last start.
Greinke throws five pitches: a four seam and a two seam fastball, a slider, a curveball, and a changeup. His fastballs have sat around 92 mph and have touched 95 mph. Additionally, his velocity has been trending upward since his first start of 2011, but it is not where it has been in the past.
Greinke's off speed pitches have given him mixed results. His slider and changeup have been above average, but his curveball has been below average. His slider is thrown around 85 mph, his curve around 76 mph, and his change around 86 mph.
For the Yankees, Freddy Garcia will take the ball, skipping Brian Gordon in the process. Garcia's peripherals indicate that his 3.30 ERA is due for an uptick. His FIP is 4.14, his xFIP is 4.11, and he owns a 6.27 K/9 to go along with a 3.08 BB/9. These obviously aren't Greinke numbers, but Garcia has been effective nonetheless. Of Garcia's thirteen starts, nine of them have bee of the quality variety.
Follow the jump for lineups, matchups, and notes.
Gardner, Granderson, Teixeira, Rodriguez, Cano, Swisher, Posada, Martin, Nunez.
Weeks, Morgan, Braun, Fielder, McGehee, Hart, Gamel, Betancourt, Lucroy.
The Yankees have the advantage in that their batters have seen Greinke may more than the Brewers have seen Freddy Garcia. Here is a link to Zack Greinke vs. current Yankees, and a link to Freddy Garcia vs. current Brewers.
It is important to note that A-Rod, Cano, Swisher, and Teixeira have been very successful against Greinke for their careers. All four have faced Greinke at least thirteen times and each has an OPS over .900 against him. For the Brewers, no player with ten or more plate appearances has shown success against Garcia. However, Craig Counsell has four hits in nine plate appearances against him.
Notes:
- Due to Brian Gordon being skipped, A.J. Burnett will take the ball tomorrow and CC Sabathia will pitch on Thursday (MLB).
- In Jeter's absence, lead off hitters Brett Gardner and Nick Swisher have combined for a .333 batting average to go along with nine walks, three doubles, and a homer (MLB).
- A-Rod is 13 for 26 in his last seven games. He has also doubled four times and walked three times in that span. His triple slash for the season currently sits at .300/.377/.513 (Yahoo!).
- Notes come from MLB.com's preview and Yahoo! Sports' preview.

I can't believe they letting Greinke loose the stadium
I really hope the SWAT team is on call…along with his therapist to console him between innings.

Also, A-Rod is not clutch.

Today’s Elias eye-popping stat: In A-Rod’s last 10 plate apps with RISP, he’s 7 for 7 with 2 walks and a sac fly.

You can still get a hit
and not score a run from 2nd, just saying.
I'm guess jorge must be running then

How is that relevant to A-Rod? He’s been doing his job at a pretty outstanding rate recently, and it wouldn’t be his fault if a player from second base didn’t get a good enough jump to score on his hit.

Stat padder. I bet all of those were in blowouts. Players from 50 years ago knew when to bother to get hits.

Of course. Players back in the 50s and 60s knew it was okay to hit .245 and walk 20 times a year, but they knew how to hit when they needed to be clutch.

stat padder
He’s a complete jerk. He probably paid the other teams shortstops to feed him the signs of the pitches that were coming. Cheater!

Asked if Yankees are appreciably better with Nunez at SS, Girardi said he’s not “opening up that can of worms.” Stressed Jeter is the SS.

What's so funny is that the reporter, or someone like him who asks that question
Will come around for a quote on “Nunez’s defense” and so on and so forth.

The Yankees are at their best when Jeter is the shortstop
Just with him at the bottom of the order and not the leadoff hitter.

LOL Dan Shaughnessy is such a moron...He says the Red Sox are going to Win the AL
Because he thinks the Sox have better pitching than the yankees (Not true as of now) and that even tho they have gone through “some roster problems and injuries” they are only a .5 game back of the yanks. Apparently this moronic Homer didn’t look at the Yankees DL list.
Whats anybody think about
Trying to get Krod and Johan? I mean idk how good either has been BUT both would seem to be cheap to get considering crazy contracts and the Mets wanting to scrap and start over. And if they want to keep Reyes he’ll want MONEY. Johan makes sense to me because he’s a lefty and the Redsox have a dominate lefthanded lineup and he’s still a pretty good pitcher last time I checked… Krod would be nice just cause I don’t trust Soriano or Feliciano or any guy we call up or find working the hot dog cart on wall street. Any thoughts just throwing it out there as a crazy 2 birds one trade idea
by Kmillz2525 on Jun 28, 2011 5:16 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
The only reason I might want Johan is cause technically pitchers tend to do better when they leave the Mets
K-Rod though, I don’t want him at all.

I heard they were aiming for August at the earliest, but for all they know, it could be spring training.
Pass.

Well i didnt know that
But makes sense since he’s a Met lol. Well there goes that idea.

Well Krod
Might be an asset in a playoff run I mean having somebody not named Drob or Mo to come in and be solid would be nice even late in the season

You’re right, but he’s already on the roster, and his name is Rafael Soriano

Last i checked
He wasn’t exactly working outthe way we planned. And the main point is we get Johan a LEFTY who the AL doesn’t see very much so he could come over and be an instant number 2 foor us who is more reliable then AJ
by Kmillz2525 on Jun 28, 2011 5:33 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
What does it matter if he’s a lefty? And he hasn’t pitched in a year. What says he’d come back to be reliable or effective?
