Yankees Lose Pitcher's Duel to Indians, 1-0
This one falls squarely on the offense. The Yankees had numerous chances to score in the early innings but squandered them all. Carlos Carrasco escaped a bases-loaded no-out jam in the very first inning. A-Rod flew out to shallow center (they should've sent Jeter from third*), Cano struck out and Swisher grounded out. The game remained scoreless. Who knew that would essentially be the turning point of the game?
The "Bombers" went 0-7 with RISP in the first three innings alone! They didn't get another runner into scoring position all night.
Then a liner that Nick Swisher just nearly caught - but didn't - allowed a lead-off triple in the fourth. A single later and Cleveland had an insurmountable 1-0 lead.
Carrasco settled down after the third, retiring 12 of the next 13 batters he faced.
To add injury to insult, Jeter pulled up lame on a fly-out, and it's being called a "sore right calf." He's being sent for an MRI. Any chances he had of reaching 3000 hits on this home-stand are probably gone.
On the bright side, Burnett was excellent and undeserving of the loss.
Play of the Game: Michael Brantley's fourth-inning triple that Swish almost caught (-10%).
Comment of the Game: long time listener
Notes -
- I respect GGBG trying to steal a single in the seventh-inning on a full count, but he's just not a good enough bunter, especially to attempt it with two strikes.
- This team needs Jesus. The catching situation is currently in shambles. As much as I love Frankie, he can't hit (55 OPS+), while Russ Martin is slumping (and injured) terribly: .610 OPS since April. Montero could easily get enough playing time to warrant his promotion as a BUC/DH/Pinch-hitter. (Ahem, he went 2-4 with a homer tonight in Scranton's 8-3 win. The homer was off a legitimate ML pitcher on a rehab stint to boot.)
* I thought that at the time too, not just in hindsight.

Well, today couldn’t have been any worse. Was hoping Yankees would make things better, but nope!

Almost.
You just need to go out and pitch 3 perfect innings against any team, anywhere. Then I will irrationally defend you in any situation.

I guess I can’t be your cheerleader then. But you could “forgive” Melkman, lure her into a false sense of security, pretend like she is your favorite, and then crush her hopes and dreams.

Every time we face a new pitcher.
It seems that the lineup thinks they are batting against the reincarnation of Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax and 1999 Pedro.
What is this "Yankees" team everyone is talking about?
Yet it seems like every time we unleash a “new” pitcher on a team they get smoked, like it should be.
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?
I imagine if instead of the Pirates facing Stephen Strasburg.
If it would have been the Yankees.

Derek Jeter is off getting an MRI. Joe Girardi thinks at the very least he will miss Tuesday night’s game. Girardi said he’s concerned.

I hate to be "that guy"
But this injury isn’t that serious even if he does end up hitting the 15 day DL. He’s been playing at replacement level all year and our lineup wouldn’t be that worse off without him. That being said, I hope he just tweaked it and is only out for a game because I’m excited to see him hit 3000.

Daenarys Targaryen is going to conquer the United States if the Yankees lose another 7+ IP 1 run game pitched by AJ Burnett
So now the guys in the subway are saying Jesus is coming on October 21, 2011, but that would mean he wouldn't be on the playoff roster, let alone be eligible for it. I really don't know where these guys are getting their information from...
then someone is going to lop Jesus's head off

holy crap…

seriously! how many quality starts is that?
how many times so far this year has good aj showed up and been denied by a lack of yankees bare minimum offense? seems like the exact opposite of what we’d come to expect after last year, with bad aj blowing a solid offensive display… now, the yankees’ offensive display is just… offensive (more often than i would have expected, anyway)…

It seems that Swish always 'almost' makes a catch and it ends up a tripple.
What is this "Yankees" team everyone is talking about?
Montero is not going to be a DH on any regular basis
Unless every other option for DH is injured. They’re still trying to keep his trade value high in the event they don’t hold onto him.
This team has no heart or grit whatsoever.
Not unlike those small market, blue collar Red Sox.

Unless you're a pitcher or Gustavo Molina, kindly SWING THE BAT and ignore the Binder's bunt signal.
Is that a real caption?

I have so much respect for their scouting! They must really have a lot of guys out there to find hidden, secret gems like Adrian Gonzalez.

If it wasn't for the 1st inning and the lack of Jebus
This loss wouldn’t have bothered me all that much

Cervelli’s 3 K’s and shoddy defense added so much!
Unless you're a pitcher or Gustavo Molina, kindly SWING THE BAT and ignore the Binder's bunt signal.
This is why, no matter what anyone in the Yankees org. says...
Until Jebus is up and catching, I’m worried that he’s being kept down for trade bait.

Hi, first post!
This might sound bad, but this is a perfect opportunity for the yankees to try my preffered top of lineup right now:
Granderson
Teixeira
Cano
A-rod
Imagine robbie’s bat with protection for the first time!!
by josechell on Jun 13, 2011 11:04 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
I'd do it
Top three hitters get the three most important spots in the batting lineup (2, 1, 4)
Too bad Girardi is a MLB manager and not open to new ideas.
by Briceratops on Jun 13, 2011 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions
I thought the most important spots were 1,3,4,2 in that order. I kept a-rod at cleanup because there's no way they move him, just imagine the reactions
by josechell on Jun 13, 2011 11:14 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
3rd place in the batting order is like 5th in importance
Because the hitter comes up so often with nobody on and two outs.
by Briceratops on Jun 13, 2011 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions
1,2,4 are about equal, with OBP earlier and SLG later.
3 and 5 are about equal, with the reduced PA from 5 being counteracted by the 2-out-nobody-on phenomenon. 6,7,8,9 in decreasing importance. In the NL, with a significantly worse hitter, you can switch 9 and 8.
yay lineup changes!

I’d be satisfied with Gardner, Granderson, Tex, A-Rod, Cano, Swisher, Posada, Nunez, E2 (if they insist) until Jeter comes back, assuming he misses any length of time at all.
It's like being a huge fan of winning, which we do, relentlessly.
by WhatwouldJeterdo on Jun 13, 2011 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions
That's probably what they are going to do
But maybe the binder doesn’t approve two lefties in a row at the top, that’s what I’m hoping
by josechell on Jun 13, 2011 11:32 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Meh, if Gardner bats 9th and Granderson leads off, it'll be that way every inning except the 1st anyway.
They both hit lefties fine, contrary to what Girardi seems to think at times, so it would be fine.

I feel the same way
But if you put gardner 1st, you can’t have cano hitting in front of a-rod, and I want to see that
by josechell on Jun 13, 2011 11:54 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I don't see that happening, personally.
Nor do I think it would matter too much.

My fault, again
I was excited to see the Yanks on my TV on a Monday when I could actually watch. And although I know my television is cursed, I couldn’t help but keep watching. All those 0s on the scoreboard made me think the Giants were playing, and when I saw Jeter limp off I knew for sure. It’s all my fault. Sorry.

Not hitting homerz are teh badz
This game is why those of us who show concern rather than sacrcasm about our insane overreliance on homers to score are correct.

If they had hit two homers today, or one homer with runners on base.......they would've won.
This is why those of us who use sarcasm AND sacrcasm to show concern about real issues like the fact that Cervelli is behind the plate when he clearly shouldn’t be, rather than insane reasoning that the Yankees don’t play “small ball” are correct AND erect!
