New York Yankees News: Long, Newman, Neyer, and More!
Did you know that the Yankees coaches play "U Can't Touch This" by M.C. Hammer after a Yankees victory? Now you do! Tyler Kepner spent some time with Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long.
Mark Newman, the Yankees Senior Vice President, talked to Chad Jennings about the minor leaguers in the Yankees system.
Newman provided some injury updates:
Greg Golson: About a week away from playing in games.
Mark Prior: "Not throwing (off a mound)," Newman said. "He’s really struggling with this kind of hip, abdominal thing. Hard to nail it down."
Alan Horne: Throwing in extended spring and building arm strength.
Graham Stoneburner, Steve Garrison, Jeremy Bleich: "Still a ways to go," Newman said.
David Adams: Having some leg problems that the Yankees believe to be related to the ankle injury that forced him to miss most of last season. He was back and playing, but then the leg started bothering him. Not sure how close he is to returning.
I suggest reading that whole article, as Newman also mentioned that Carlos Silva can opt out in mid-June, and Bryan Mitchell could be the next Betances/Banuelos type of pitcher.
Rob Neyer put some quotes about the Buster Posey injury together into one funny piece.
Brian Cashman told George King that the "headache stuff is available," but the "quality stuff is not available," when it comes to the starting pitching market.
The Yankees released Brian Anderson and Andy Sisco. Anderson, a former outfielder converted into a pitcher, was pitching in AA Trenton, and Sisco was the top lefty in AAA until the Yankees signed Randy Flores to a minor league deal.
Questions of the Week:

Glad to see MC Hammer music is alive and well...?
Kind of a bummer that Prior and Adams are struggling to recover from their injuries, though with Prior you can’t really be surprised.

Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Nick Swisher, Ivan Nova, Freddy Garcia.
Derek Sanderson: 4 (he’s about what I expect from him at this point, though I think he could play a little better)
The Santurce Slugger: 3 (just not pretty to watch at the plate right now at all)
Stevie’s Boy: 6 (on the rebound! like he pretty much had to be considering his ridiculous unlucky numbers so far)
The Sweaty One: 5 (he’s getting it done, but I don’t know how long his magic tricks will work, especially against good teams)
Unless you're a pitcher or Gustavo Molina, kindly SWING THE BAT and ignore the Binder's bunt signal.
Re: Question of the week
Jeet – 7
Sado – 4
Swish – 7
Nova – 3
Garcia – 4
If there’s no quality starting pitching out there, maybe Cash should seriously consider one of the Bs. Or we may end up seeing a re-do of the Hughes/Colon situation with Nova/Noesi if Nova keeps burying himself in the 2nd after a 1-2-3 1st.
"Our problem right now is we have too many pitchers on the 15-day Pavano. That's what it's officially called now. Did you know that? The Pavano. His body just shuts down from actually pitching for 6 weeks. It's like when you get an organ transplant and your body rejects it. His body rejected pitching. It's not used to it." - Moose

Garcia's stats through nearly 50 IP
3.26 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, close to 2.5:1 k:bb ratio, aside from the fact that he doesn’t go more than 6 innings, what else can you ask from the guy?
For him to not have peripherals that scream he’s pitching on borrowed time/getting supremely lucky?

Garcia’s xFIP is 4.10, and I would take that in a heartbeat out of a 5th starter for the Yankees. The fact that he’s getting a bit lucky is gravy on top.

You go through The Sporting News for the last 100 years, and you will find two things are always true. You never have enough pitching, and nobody ever made money.

Maybe they subconsciously threw those first 2 games against Seattle.
I would guess that listening to MC Hammer 4 days in a row could drive one to snap.
