Position by Position Quick List

Pretty bored on this Sunday so I decided to create a list of the top 5 players at each position. Some guys maybe injured others may of haven't played a lot this year, but their previous seasons give them credibility with this list. It basically has no time requirement. I was just looking through the last 2-3 seasons (with this year included) to make a better judgement on each of these guys. If you would like to change it lets see your list. Top 5 lists after the jump.

I’d put asdrubal cabrera somewhere on that SS list. His numbers in the last 3 years has been pretty good in terms of offense, while his defense has been lacking

When I was checking the numbers Stephen Drew really surprised me.

Plus there is Andrus, but looking over the past 2-3 years I still can’t leave Jeter out of the top 5.

David Wright makes a case for third base, and I might not have Span on that list. With the names you gave, he’d be number 5 on that list for me.

Michael Bourn has the highest WAR for CF from 2009-2011, so I’m curious as to why he isn’t on your list.

Agreed on Span. Not seeing how he is even top 5.

For some reason I like Span.

Though after looking at the stats I see Bourn has been solid.

I like all the guys after Span a lot though.

Probably because the Astros are such a terrible team that his contributions are lost in the mess that they are.

Jeter in the top 5. Bull.

WHEN YOU DESCRIBE the prototypical NBA center, he is not complete without superlative size, strength and athleticism. He’ll fight for the tough rebounds in the trenches, but is just as quick to burn you with a shot from 15 feet.

Johan Petro possesses all of these skills and more, and at a mere 23 years of age, he bears all the promise of fulfilling his vast potential.

Well if you read this is from the past 2-3 seasons.

2009 counts.

then he should be higher?

and so should other players.

If you know so much man make a SS list right now.

And put stats.

WAR #’s show that

Tulo, Han-Ram, Alexei, Drew, Jetes could be top SS.

If you look here since 2009 these guys are top 5 in WAR for SS’s. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=ss&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=6&season=2011&month=0&season1=2009&ind=0

I dunno dude

I thought you put together a really solid list but Jeter is a completely different player than he was in 2009

Definitely.

Cabrera or Escobar could be on this list. Andrus is also there.

some disagreement.

Ellsbury has to be in top five CF. He is red hot this season coming off injury.
Gonzalez has to be ahead of Votto, sorry.
I would rather have Yunel Escobar at short than Jeter. and that says a lot.
Martin? really? how about Arencibia? Avila? I just cant see Martin there.

This isn't a knock on Gonzalez who is primed for a monster year

But Votto has been the better player the last couple of years

And if you're saying Ellsbury has to be in the top five because of this season

Than Martin deserves to be in the top spot because he’s been the best catcher in baseball this season
Be consistent

also a great 2009.

Sure

He was pretty good in 08-09, and so far this year he’s been really good
Span had an even better 09 and this year he’s been great as well
They both have arguments to be included in the top 5 CF discussion

Ellsbury's "great" 2009 netted him 2.6 WAR

Good for 14th in MLB. He’ll never be a top 5 CF because he can’t actually field the position well. ANd that is something that even everyone at OTM will agree with. He can make flashy plays because he’s fast, but he often makes routine plays look hard because he takes bad routes.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

by CasanovaWong on May 29, 2011 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

It's weird

One of the reasons his 08 was so good was because of his defense and despite the better offensive numbers in 09 he as you noted wasn’t even a 3 WAR player because he was terrible in the field
The CF position isn’t all the strong which is why I said he had an argument to be included but when all said and done I don’t think I would include him either

Martin is having a monster year

But he did say he was looking at the past 2-3 years, so maybe he doesn’t belong
But with Votto’s MVP season last year, he gets the nod over everyone but Pujols.

my apologies.

I saw that and I kind of did nitpick. I feel how I feel. But again, nitpiking. only real one I have a real issue with is Span being there.

Even if you are nitpicking, you disagree. I’m giving you a chance here to change it now that you see it’s based on 2-3 seasons, or back up your argument.

Even if this was just based on this year, I fail to see how you have Arencibia over Martin, AND how you fail to see any problem with Yadier Molina in top 5 catchers, but you see a problem with Russell Martin in top 5 catchers.

Barnd

Since 2008 Martin has the 3rd highest WAR behind Mauer and McCann. His injuries left him from being higher because he missed some time in between that.

Ells?

I can name a lot of guys better than Ells.

Grandy, Kemp, Rasmus, Span, Bourn, McCutchen, Victorino, and maybe Stubbs.

Also Votto is better than Gonzo.

Because I was basing this off the past 2-3 seasons. Which Derek’s 2009 in included. So I wouldn’t be acting superior to me.
