Joe DiMaggio's 56-Game Hitting Streak Started Today
One of the most famous records in American sports began on this day 70 years ago. Joe DiMaggio hit a measly single against the White Sox in a 13-1 Yankees loss. He would go on to hit in another 55 straight games.
We're going to feature a widget on the sidebar of Pinstripe Alley, similar to the one for Derek Jeter, telling you what DiMaggio did in each of the next 55 games back in 1941.

That's cool.
The only thing better than an Anderson is a Granderson.
Wagoning since the day I was born.
DiMaggio and Williams
During the streak, DiMaggio had 91 hits in 223 ABs, for a BA of .408, just a tick above Ted Williams’ .406 for the entire season. DiMaggio’s magnificent streak illustrates the difficulty – and greatness – of Williams’ achievement.

So true. I believe that I saw an interview with Joe D. once where he said that
his motivation for continuing the streak was as a tribute to the greatness of Ted William’s season.
In my opinion...
…it’s a record that will never be broken.
Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."
Most likely not.

Consistently lucky! But also very talented. I think my favorite story of the streak is when this one pitcher said he would stop him by getting him out one time and pitching around him the other at-bats. Sure enough, he got Joe to ground out in his first at bat, then walked him in his next 2 AB’s. He started doing it again in the 9th or something and Joe just reached out over the plate and smacked a pitch way outside into centerfield for a hit. What a player.
Unless you're a pitcher or Gustavo Molina, kindly SWING THE BAT and ignore the Binder's bunt signal.
damn them!
well, i probably use them enough without properly crediting them that i’ll forgive them… this time.
