The its only april but Montero post

Well the Yankees are getting set for game two against the Twins with CC taking the mound and Russell Martin behind the plate. In his limited action as a Yankee Martin has been pretty good offensively and defensively, but again the sample size is too small to make any real assessment of him overall. The question I really want to pose is, If Russell Martin is able to return to his old 2007 form and become a real offensive force as well as a very good defensive catcher would the Yankees decide that he will be their starting catcher of the future and what would that mean for Jesus Montero?
If Martin does return to his old form then then the Yankees have several options of what they could do with him
A) They could keep him as their starting catcher. After all he is only 28 and is much better defensively than Montero or Cervelli.
B) The Yankees could trade him midway through the season for a starting pitcher.
C) They could let him go after the year and if he gets class A free agency then they would get a draft pick.

Star-divide

Those options are all assuming that he does return to his old form and doesn't flop in the Bronx, because if he does flop then he will be backing up Jesus Montero before you can say oh' Canada.
Jesus Montero is the Yankees top prospect and probable the must hyped prospect since Derek Jeter, but Montero's key chip is his bat because his defense behind the plate is poor despite his strong arm and most scouts do not think that he will be able to stay behind the plate. Would the Yankees trade Montero or would they move him somewhere else? Unfortunately the most likely place to move him would be 1st base or right field and both those places are currently taken by Mark Teixiera and Nick Swisher and I doubt that the Yankees would cut either loose even for a prospect like Montero. Montero has been a big trade chip that teams have asked the Yankees for and he was almost traded for Cliff Lee last season and despite loosing out on the backup spot this spring his status as the systems top prospect remains intact. If the Yankees did decide to trade Montero who would they trade him for? I can't see them trading him for anything but a starting pitcher but who? Obviously if the Mariners made Felix available the Yankees would trade Montero for him but other than that who else would they be willing to part with Montero for?

I think that these pitchers are the only ones that the Yankees would be willing to trade Montero for:

  • Clayton Kershaw (23, lefty and has a sub 3 ERA and over 200 innings pitched)
  • Trevor Cahil (same as Kershaw but a righty and just under 200 innings pitched)
  • Josh Johnson ( had a 2.30 ERA last year in the NL east with 28 starts)

Other than Felix those are the only pitchers that I can think of that I would trade Montero for and the teams could have some possible interest in a trade with the Yankees. I'd love to trade for Matt Cain but the Giants don't need a catcher, 1st baseman or right fielder and the Phillies aren't going to do a trade and the Yankees wouldn't deal Montero to the Rays or Sox. Do you have any other pitchers that you would trade Montero for and would you do any of these trades?

with all due respect

this post is way too premature (game 5 of the regular season). Wait and see how Martin is playing by the end of May to speculate on whether he’s doing a good enough job that the Yankees would keep him and trade Montero (or vice versa, call up Montero and make Martin the backup and send Molina and Cervelli to the minors).

Really, I would just wait. This was a much debated topic during Spring Training, and now, only time (and on-field performance) will tell.

i know its premature

All of the above

I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?

Why?

1) I’d rather trade Romine
and
2) Rus Martin can be an all-star for this year for all I care, he’s not Jesus Montero.

For the love of baby Jesus

none of those teams are going to trade away their ace just because the Yankees say so. Lesser teams do not owe the Yankees a big name player for peanuts just because they may not be competing that year.

The Cardinals are not trading Carpenter because there is a 2012 season! Just because a team might not compete does not mean they need to dump their talent. Kershaw is the only reason the Dodgers are on the map, without him they’d be bottom feeders, Montero or not.

As good as Montero is (or could be) you can’t just get anything you want for him. If you could the Yankees would have already traded him. Proven ace > power hitting catching prospect every. single. time.

To get any of these pitchers you would have to give up a lot more than just Montero. You would need big league players, and good ones, to the point where you would open more holes in the team. It makes no sense.

The most we can hope for is a surprise non-contender trying to dump a guy before he’s a free agent. If Montero starts bashing the ball maybe you could trade Martin, but more likely they’ll keep his bat. We’re not trading for any big pitching stud this year so we should all get this out of our heads because there is no one realistically available.

Thank you.

Amen, brother (or sister as the case may be- I don't keep track).

I would trade Montero in an instant for any of the starters mentioned in the poll, but no other team would be stupid enough to make that deal.

Having said that, Martin is a huge defensive improvement over either Posada or Cervelli. He is also an excellent baserunner, for what it’s worth. Those skills won’t disappear if he goes into a slump.

I think the best thing that could happen is Martin continues to play well, then we use him as a trade piece for a top line starter when Jesus is called up

I saw a guy in the subway holding a pamphlet that said Jesus was coming on May 12, 2011. I don't think it will be that early, he would still qualify as a super two, so they need to wait until June to delay his arbitration clock.

If he continues to perform well,

Montero should be the one traded. We would get more out of him even though he’s an unproven product. Why trade the guy from whom we know what we’re getting when we could trade the guy with a higher value and could turn out to be a bust?

I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?

Because Montero has way more upside.

Trade Jesus

Yanks are quickly learning/remembering how nice it is to have a solid defensive catcher who can aslo contribute offensively. Baby Jesus is gane as soon as the right offer comes along, and no, it won’t be straight up for the studs mentioned above. I’m not up on the contract status of some of the better starters around, but you can bet a non-contending team will need Jesus plus major league talent. Maybe Jesus, Jaba, Nova, and Betances gets you a stud. I say pull the trigger, we don’t need hyped up lord almighties, we need proven talent. Give me Russel Martin and an excellent #1/#2 starter any day for those 4 dudes who may never amount to much.

I'm sure the Yanks remember all those World Series titles they had with Posada too

Montero

Isn’t going anywhere no matter how well Russell Martin does,he’s just keeping the spot warm till Jesus is ready to go.
