New York Yankees' AA, AAA Affiliates Announce Rosters

The Trenton Thunder (AA) and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (AAA) have released their preliminary rosters. Three will be cut from AAA and that will likely affect AA players as well.

Trenton Thunder Opening Day Roster:

Pitchers:

Cory Arbiso, Wilkins Arias, Manny Banuelos, Dellin Betances, Steve Garrison, Shaeffer Hall, Fernando Hernandez, Craig Heyer, Kei Igawa, Tim Norton, Naoya Okamoto, Graham Stoneburner, Pat Venditte.

Hitters:

Austin Romine, Myron Leslie, Corban Joseph, Addison Maruszak, Yadil Mujica, Jose Pirela, Cody Johnson, Austin Krum, Ray Kruml, Melky Mesa, Jack Rye, Damon Sublett.

Notice the notables like Banuelos, Betances, Stoneburner, Romine, Joseph, Mesa, Sublett. Steve Garrison, who almost made the big league squad, will start the year in AA instead. Pat Venditte, the ambidextrous pitcher, finally gets to start the year in AA, but you can't be too certain with the future moves that are necessary.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees Opening Day Roster:

Pitchers:

Andrew Brackman, Buddy Carlyle, George Kontos, D.J. Mitchell, Hector Noesi, Lance Pendleton, David Phelps, Amauri Sanit, Josh Schmidt, Andrew Sisco, Adam Warren, Kevin Whelan, Eric Wordekemper.

Hitters:

Ryan Baker, Jose Gil, Jesus Montero, Doug Bernier, Brandon Laird, Luis Nunez, Ramiro Pena, Kevin Russo, Jorge Vazquez, Daniel Brewer, Chris Dickerson, Greg Golson, Justin Maxwell, Jordan Parraz

Looks like David Phelps will be SWB's opening night starter.

serious question

Why don’t they just cut Igawa? I count six starters ahead of him in AA and AAA, and that’s not even counting Millwood. And I’d imagine there are just as many relievers who would get the call before Igawa (who I know is a reliever now). He has no trade value, and the Yankees are on the hook for the rest of his money no matter what. Why have him waste a high-minors roster spot?

I remember a long time ago the same issue was brought up at RAB

and I remember that there was a reason that made sense
I just can’t remember it

just did a quick search

And found this. It says they can’t trade him an eat some of the money because that would have luxury tax implications. It seems like there aren’t the same implications if he’s cut, but the Yankees are keeping him around to be the swingman/emergency starter – a role that can’t really be filled by a young guy whose innings are being monitored. Viewed in that light, I guess it makes no difference if Igawa fills the AAA swingman role or some other washed-up non-prospect does so.

thought so!

and honestly, if they are just going to eat his salary, why not just keep him on our team to eat some minor league innings?
as you can see, our AA rotation even with Banuelos, Stoneburner, and Betances does not have five can’t miss prospects that need to pitch every five days

As soon he hits the 40-man roster, the Yankees will have to pay an extra ~$2.2m in luxury tax. I’m sure the Yankees can find someone else (no worse than Igawa) for the pro-rated min. in the event an emergency starter is needed. 0% chance he pitches for the Yankees this year.

I think they mean emergency starts in AA and AAA.

There really is no other reason to keep him other than for MiLB depth. I suppose they don’t want him signed by another team for the league min. while there could be a sliver of a chance that he could pitch against them.

I’d probably see that as a positive against a Yankees lineup.

I really like a lot of the names in our farm system

No really, some of those names are awesome!

one of the reasons I'm rooting for Dellin so much

not just because he has the ceiling of a #1, but because his name is Dellin

What position will Laird play?

Does Luis have any relation to Eduardo

Yes, that is Kyle Kuric

by TheRealSlimShady on Apr 5, 2011 12:09 AM EDT reply actions

I remember Laird playing mostly third last year

But they played him at the corner outfield positions and first base to increase his versatility, and I think that will continue
Luis and Eduardo are both hispanic names so it would not surprise me that they were related

think of Laird as a Eric Hinske type

1st, 3rd, LF, RF
not a defensive stalwart by any means but versatile enough to be a great bench player

by Brian5517209 on Apr 5, 2011 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions

that's what we desperately need

I think we’re going to need a Chone Figgins-type for the next few years Mostly to spell A-Rod and Jeter at least once a week, but if the guy’s a good enough hitter, we’ll find ABs for him in the outfield (and second base once in a while). I hope Laird can be that guy.

by long time listener on Apr 5, 2011 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think Laird can play SS or 2B

but there is a lot of value in being able to play four different positions

CHARLES NOOOOOOOOOO!!!

true

I guess Laird would be the second-best thing. If he can play those four positions, the Yankees can afford to sign a veteran middle infielder to spell Jeter, I guess.

What about that Pope guy on the 40 man, or am I imagining things…(cue smartass response with picture of real pope)

Yes, that is Kyle Kuric

by TheRealSlimShady on Apr 5, 2011 2:25 AM EDT reply actions

Ryan Pope

No idea. He’s still listed on the 40-man on the website, but not on the Trenton or Scranton rosters. Maybe they sent him back down to Tampa? His numbers aren’t all that impressive after two years in Trenton, maybe they cut him. A case of too many relief arms.

if they cut him

Cashman, Girardi and the Steinbrenners will be locked away until they pick a replacement. You’ll know they found someone once white smoke starts coming out of the scoreboard.

Does he have to be named Pope too?

Let’s just hope he’s not a German who was in Hitler youth groups as a kid and looks eerily similar to Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars.
