Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford vs. Russell Martin
The Red Sox two big off-season pick ups haven't been exactly good yet. While the Yankees big pick up was Rafael Soriano, New York did sign a catcher to take over for Jorge Posada behind the plate. Russell Martin was our guy. The Yankees stole him from the Red Sox and his home country Toronto ,Canada. Martin had injury issues in Los Angeles, and only played 97 games in 2010. Through 8 games Martin has looked stellar. He's hit 3 home runs, has 8 RBI's, and stole 2 bases. One of those steals was third on opening day vs. the Tigers.
Here are some other numbers to look at for Martin and the Red Sox duo.
Martin :
.345 OBP, .679 SLG, .452 wOBA
Gonzalez :
.343 OBP, .438 SLG, .341 wOBA
Crawford :
.200 OBP, .152 SLG, .181 wOBA
How about value so far/
Well, Martin leads the three with a .5 WAR. Gonzalez has a .1 and Crawford sits with a -.3 WAR. Yes that's no mistake a negative WAR for Carl Crawford. He may owe the team money back if he continues to play like this. So for you at home who are keeping track that's a positive .5 WAR for Martin and a -.2 WAR for the Red Sox duo.
Just cool start to the season with some stats. Also remember, 8 games is an incredibly small sample size (SSS) so don't take much from this. I'm sure Crawford will turn it around, and Gonzalez hasn't even been bad. Hopefully Martin continues to hit like this.

I think a better comparison to make throughout the year will be Martin vs. Saltaladingdong, since he is who they had to settle with when we cock blocked their attempts to get Martin.
I saw a guy in the subway holding a pamphlet that said Jesus was coming on May 12, 2011. I don't think it will be that early, he would still qualify as a super two, so they need to wait until June to delay his arbitration clock.
Use OPS
instead of OBP or use OBP for Crawford as compared to OPS for Martin and Gonzo. They bat in spots in the order where one doesn’t pertain to the other. Who cares what Gonzo’s OBP is? Crawford? Yes.
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?

(Weighted On Base Average) wOBA assigns a linear weight to each of the possible outcomes of a plate appearance. (In the above formula, NIBB = Non intentional walk, RBOE = Reached base on error) The coefficients of each outcome are determined by their relative correlation to runs being scored as a result of that event. wOBA is one of the most inclusive and revealing statistics for batting analysis. Don’t listen to that guy, he’s a putz.

Who cares what Gonzo’s OBP is?
Ummm, everyone who wants to know if he succeeds at the plate or not?

Haha
makes sense. If he has a low OBP then obviously isn’t doing that well at the plate.

My point is that a leadoff hitter’s obp is an important stat while Gonzo needs to be driving him in (ops). Walks don’t drive in runs and I doubt that is what he was signed for.
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?
It is a complete fallacy to think that guys in different spots in the batting order should do different things at the plate. If A-Gonz draws a walk with Pedroia on base, there’s now two runners on for Youkalis and the Sox are probably going to put up a crooked number.

Yeah, yeah, I know. That’s why every team since the beginning of time at any level has heeded your call.
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?
Right. He’s bats fourth in the first inning, so his only job is to be an “RBI guy.” If only I had played in college, I could be blessed with such wonderful insights that are based in reality and not moronic conventional wisdom.

Not talking about him.
You think you are as always right as he does, so I don’t understand why we continue to pretend otherwise. You played in college and Duggan is wrong but always thinks he’s right if he doesn’t agree with you. We get it.

I know
to whom you were referring. But he’s wrong and can’t admit it. Even stranger, he can’t let any of my comments go without trying to contradict it while others may make the same case and he ignores it or actually agrees with them at times. He’s hung up on me, I don’t blame him. My wife’s kinda like that…
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?
You do the exact same thing.
It’s getting old that every time he disagrees you tell him he thinks he’s always right, but you are right because you played in college and he didn’t so you know better. When have you admitted to being wrong?

Where did I say I’m right because I played? It does help to know the game tho and when you see cases being made such as this latest, which no one in history has ever condoned and yet someone thinks it is right, it’s just wrong. And pay attention, look ’em up, he has the hang up and as I said, always has to start the argument. I just have fun with it.
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?
Whenever someone disagrees it comes up that you played, so you'd know what's right.
Just because it’s not right to you doesn’t mean it’s not right. He isn’t any more hung up on you than you seem to be on him and it’s just getting to be tired.

I mentioned it once
Where in this thread did I mention that? Nowhere. He did. Hang up…

Alright david, you won't see it any other way, even though that's your beef with him...

He said that A-Gonz should get on base in front of Youk
You then said “that’s why every team since the beginning of time at any level has heeded your call”. I’m sorry that I don’t see that as him starting anything. Again, it doesn’t matter. You’re not gonna see it that way, so this is a waste of everyones time.

Like I said, Duggan, if you’re wisdom is the Lord’s word why do absolutely no teams, in the past or currently, follow yours? You really do need to believe your thought processes are not always the only way…
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?
That is NOT obnoxious?

He’s not obnoxious, he played baseball in college. In case, you know, you missed it the other 950 times he brought it up to try to validate his nonsense opinions.

I have no idea why that is the end all, be all of conversations.
Never have, never will. You don’t have to have played to understand how the friggin game works.

We got no hit man.
12-0
The best talented team I was on and we can’t beat last years champs. Let alone get a hit. Their pitcher wasn’t even that good. He struck only 5 out and his defense got the rest. I hit one up the middle and this kid robbed my by getting it and throwing me out by a centimeter. Well I thought I was safe the umpire though otherwise.

Cuz his OBP is .300, maybe? Cuz I think last season was his peak and after one shortened season I don’t think that was enough to think he should be the leadoff hitter.
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?
He started off slow last season too
And he is still in his prime at twenty-seven years of age
I feel that it is kind of a stretch to say that his OBP will plummet dramatically

And right now, until proven differently, he's the best option we have.

Now your logic is making no sense. As your Lord stated, it doesn’t matter. Besides he would still be batting in front of Jeter. So, where is he on this one? Oh wait, it wasn’t me who brought it up. See the hypocrisy?
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?
See, why do you do that?
He’s not even saying anything. Calling him obnoxious and then being obnoxious yourself doesn’t make you look cool.
The exact order doesn’t matter, but certain people are better suited for certain ranges in the batting order. You’re not gonna bat A-Rod lead off and you’re not gonna bat Gardner clean up. A good guy to lead off is someone who gets on base a lot, takes a lot of pitches, and has speed is what you want on base in front of guys who drive in more runs. Gardner does that.

Okay, I'll stop.
But you do have to admit he tries to pick apart my comments whereas somebody else can say the same thing and he sits mum. And you will also notice I don’t do that with the comments of his with which I disagree, I only respond to his responses to my comments. Look it up. I don’t have the issue.
I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?
If he could emulate his 2010 season, which at twenty-seven is entirely plausible
He’d be the perfect leadoff man
Plate discipline, getting on base a lot, steals…
I’m starting to salivate lol

People said he’d be a better leadoff hitter than Derek Jeter, so he sucks.

Better is relative
Crawford and Gonzo are one of the best at their positions, which Martin certainly was for his a couple seasons ago and now healthy could reclaim that notion.
Most people expect corner outfielders and first basemen to hit better than catchers.
