I am really tired of hearing that the Red Sox are going to be such a great team this year. Jeff Passan said they have the most and best pitching depth in the AL, and even though he is an idiot, Tim Brown, who is not an idiot, agreed basically.

I think they are a very good team and the probable favorites in the AL, but I don’t think they have great pitching, or great pitching depth. Too many question marks to pick the Yankees right now. I’m assuming Yankees solve those question marks in time to win wild card, make it to World Series.

Honestly, what question marks?

The Yankees starting rotation has question marks, but so do the Red Sox. The Yankees, IMO, have a superior bullpen. And the Red Sox hitting may have slightly improved, but the Yankees hitting hasn’t gone down any and has the potential to be even better this year.

Starting Pitching. I don’t like assuming Burnett will be better, and with that being said the Yankees have only two sure thing starters, if you even call Hughes that. Red Sox don’t have a great rotation, and that’s why they aren’t a great team. I think the two teams are about equal, with the Sawx winning division by a couple of games.

Errr.... Slightly improved?

They added Adrian Gonzolez, 30+ power hitter and almost 300batting average, and Carl Crawford, a +.300 hitter and almost 20 homeruns. Slightly improved?

by yanksrule on Mar 27, 2011 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I think slightly improved is fair

Don’t forget, they lost Beltre and Martinez. Last year’s stats:

Gonzalez – .298/.393/.511 31 HR
Beltre – .321/.365/.553 28 HR

Crawford – .307/.356/.495 19 HR
Martinez – .302/.351/.493 20 HR

Sure, the ex-Red Sox put up those numbers in Fenway, but since they’re nearly identical to their replacements’ without adjusting for that, I think you can safely call the new additions a “slight improvement.”

by Q-TDSK on Mar 27, 2011 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s not even that simple. Gonzales is essentially replacing Beltre, that is right, but Crawford is replacing Drew or Cameron, whoever gets put on the bench. They did not replace Martinez, at starting catcher they have Saltalawhydidnttheyshortenmynameatellisisland, who is a big question mark.

by Wraithpk on Mar 27, 2011 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point

On the other hand, I think you can expect them to be less injury-plagued this season (especially since Beltre is gone,) so that counts as a bit of an improvement too.

But there were so many stories on ESPN about the Red Sox signing guys the Yankees wanted and guaranteeing success! The real difference between last year’s Sox team and this year’s will be the (likely) full season of health for Youkilis and Pedroia.

Gustavo Molina's batting average: .056

Well on his way to making my prediction of .050 come true!

Also of note: Romine is batting .183, Martin is batting .250, Montero is batting .250. However, Montero has been omgsoterrible if you listen to anyone talk the past week or so. Interesting, that.

Usqueadbaugham! Anam muck an dhoul ! Did ye drink me doornail?

by Q-TDSK on Mar 27, 2011 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Possibly.

I just think it’s unfair we signed Martin and promised him the starting job while he’s done no better than Montero, but Baby Jesus gets all the talk of being disappointing in spring training. If it had actually been a competition instead of just handing Martin a pass, well, we wouldn’t have to worry about seeing the likes of Gustavo Molina on the roster.

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Mar 27, 2011 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the brass just decided they wanted him to get more AB’s in the longrun and ended the so called competition.

I don't think there ever was a so called competition, and that was my problem with it.

It was always said that they signed Martin to be the starting catcher, not to battle it out to see who was best in ST.

I just think the 2 best out of spring training should have been the starter and backup.

Instead we have a guy who hasn’t proven he can stay healthy and (most likely) a guy who might hit less than .100. Awesome.

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Mar 27, 2011 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I suspect they really didn't want to bring Montero up this season

I’m not saying that’s the right decision, but I don’t mind waiting another season for him myself.

worried the Yanks at the time. The Sox had some keys signings and the Yanks had nothing.

Addition by subtraction. Us signing Martin made the Red Sox go with a weak catching corps.

I disagree with everyone else's "we signed Martin so the Sox wouldn't get him" narrative

Montero is young and inexperienced, Cervelli is a backup, and Posada is old, so we needed to get a catcher and i think signing someone of Martin’s caliber was the best case scenario
sorry about your Tarheels btw, i didn’t get a single team in the final four :(

I just wish we hadn't promised him a starting job without seeing who was best.

If he proved to be best, then I would have been fine with it. Alas, not my call.

Thanks man, I’m still kinda bummed. We had a good year and I can’t be too disappointed in what they accomplished after not even making the tournament last year. Still got to experience winning a National Championship while I was in school here, and that’s all I can really ask for. I didn’t get any teams in the Final Four either haha.

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Mar 27, 2011 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I truly, truly worry he could end up being 2011's Nick Johnson.

Only worse, because he plays a position we can’t just easily replace.

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Mar 27, 2011 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I just can’t see him being that bad. He has tons of potential to be a positive addition but also the potential to be a negative one. I think he harnesses the positive, but it’s all speculation. Long will probably help him out. I’m a little confused by this

I mean continually hurt like Nick Johnson, not necessarily just bad.

He could be fine and perfectly healthy, and that would be great, but I’ll have to see it before I believe it.

I’d hope they’d call up Montero, and I think he’d be fine, but it seems like they don’t agree that he’s good enough now, so I’m not sure.

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Mar 27, 2011 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I think if Martin got hurt they would go with Montero over someone like Gustavo Molina. Backup and starting are (hopefully) two different stories.
