Spring Training Game No. 24: Yankees at Phillies

It'll be CC Sabathia taking on Joe Blanton and the Phillies today in Clearwater.

Gametime is 1 p.m. without (live) TV coverage. MLBN will air the tape-delayed contest at 5 p.m.

PS: You might have heard that A.J. Burnett was named the no. 2 starter. Do you agree with that decision?

I have no issues with AJ being No. 2

He’s had a very decent ST so far and him not giving out free passes is a sign of good things to come hopefully.

Agreed

It’s not like Hughes is really staking a claim this ST. Plus, I think most Yankee fans are used to thinking of AJ as No. 2.

Lol

Yes, after last season I still think of him as number 2.

I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?

as long as Jeter doesn’t change his approach like he did last year. I think Gardner on base affects how Jeter bats. He needs to ignore him and just do what he’s been doing for 14 years before last season. Jeter always seemed overly concerned with what Gardy was doing or going to do.

I bet it's good to be playing again, huh?

This is very silly. Jeter had a tough year; he’ll most likely be better this year. But his bad year was because Gardner was on base? Jeter’s spent plenty of time in his career hitting behind guys like Gardner and Johnny Damon who are looking to run on the basepaths.

He lost his swing and batspeed and beat the ball into the ground because Brett Gardner might steal? Sorry, don’t see that at all.

Also, Gardner hit 100 singles and drew 79 walks, so he was on first base 179 times. He hit in front of Jeter ~1/2 of his plate appearances (215 plate appearances batting 9th, 115 plate appearances batting 1st), so, I’m not sure if this can be looked up anywhere, but you would expect that Jeter hit with Gardner on 1st base less than 100 times throughout the course of the season.

Jeter had 739 plate appearances. Less than 100 of them had Gardner on 1st. Using that as a reason for Derek’s season just doesn’t hold water.

technically wouldn't Gardner always be batting in front of Jeter?

after 9 comes 1 again, after all. I guess you would have to look back and remove all 1st inning stats for Jeter when he batted leadoff. That’s way too complicated. Regardless, I’ve been impressed with Gardner and Jeter this spring

by jetanumba2 on Mar 20, 2011 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

No, because GGBG batted 2nd, 7th, and 8th as well, which is where the half of the time comes from when he’s not batting (directly) in front of Jeter.

ah I see

I had completely forgotten he was thrown around the lineup

God, Arod is in beast mode. Save some for the regular season!

February 14th, pitchers, catchers, and Messiahs report to Spring Training.

burnett

He is a number 2 pitcher. I have a feeling this will be a nice bounce back year for him.

Never under estimate the grittiness and guttiness of Bret Gardner.

Obviously the main reason why lee chose to go there

by lololol on Mar 20, 2011 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

AJ has proven he can still be the 2nd starter

He did start off well last year, then declined in the second half…
I’m hoping the Pitching coach keeps him intact and he gets a nice relationship going with Martin or any of the younger catchers… and he has a good one already with Cervelli… so..good move… if anything, it still keeps some pressure off of Hughes while he continues to get stronger.

That's just Ridiculous!

So close to a home run Baby Jesus. So close.

Damn, Baby Jesus.

6 inches away from a home run.

Nope.
