Best rotations in the MLB thread discussion

There are many talented rotations in the MLB. I'm going to go through each of the best rotations that baseball has to offer. I'll be looking at two rotations from each division. The Yankees will not be in it because I think we all know about our rotation. We don't really have a set one yet either. So sit back and see what top rotations we might see this season. (regular season, playoffs):

Star-divide

Boston Red Sox :

I figured since they're our biggest rival and in our division, we'd start out with the Sox. They have a lot of talent in there: Jon Lester being their lefty ace and young Clay Buchholz coming off a nice year. They also have some veterans in Josh Beckett and John Lackey. Their main concern in Daisuke Matsuzaka. Overall, the Red Sox have one of the best rotations in the league. The bullpen may not be their strong point, but that's for another time.

Lester is now a Cy Young candidate entering 2011. Over his past 3 seasons, Lester has had a WAR over 5.0. He strikes out a lot of guys and leaves the majority of his base-runners stranded. His GB% is 53.6% and his FB% is 29.6%. It's a key for Lester to get a lot of ground balls, and to have less fly balls in a hitter's park like Fenway. Lester's ERA was 3.25 last year and he had a 3.13 FIP. He should have another year like 2010, unfortunately for Yankee fans.

I'll also take a look at Clay Buchholz. He had a very lucky 2010 in my eyes. His FIP was a full run over his ERA. Plus he had a LOB% close to 80%. While he had a great 2010 in the eyes of people who don't look at these numbers, it will show that he will regress in 2011 (unless he truly pitches out of his mind for an entire year). That won't happen, even though projection sites are predicting a 3.60 ERA which isn't bad at all. But there is no way a Red Sox pitcher other than Lester can win the Cy Young.

The whole rotation: Lester, Buchholz, Lackey, Beckett, Matsuzaka

Tampa Bay Rays

Our next rotation round up is the Rays, which is arguably the best rotation in the American League. It's filled with young healthy arms. The Rays lost some offensive power, but if their pitchers live up to expectations they won't have a problem keeping up with the Yankees and Red Sox at the top of the East. David Price had a Cy Young caliber season. The Rays lost Matt Garza, but that shouldn't be a problem because young Jeremy Hellickson should be good to go. Jeff Niemann, Big Game James Shields, and the second year man Wade Davis are also ready to go. It's a very young rotation, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them keeping up with the two powerhouses. After all, they are the defending AL East Champions.

Price had a similar problem as Buchholz, where his ERA (2.72) was a lot lower than his FIP (3.42). I see Price as a more talented pitcher though. Price strikes out about two more batters a game than Buchholz and walks less. He also induces more ground balls. His WHIP was 1.19 and his WAR was 4.3. Price should improve in 2011.

Replacing Matt Garza with Jeremy Hellickson might work. Garza was only a 1.8 WAR pitcher, so maybe the Rays can find that 1.8 WAR from Hellickson and a better David Price, or another player. In Hellickson's 36.1 innings, pitched he posted a 3.47 ERA. Not bad for a rookie. He stranded 80% of his base-runners, but that's a small sample size. His K/9 was 8 and his BB/9 was a little under 2. He had a good WHIP of 1.10. Half of his balls in play were fly balls.

Watch out for the young arms in the Rays rotation.

The whole rotation: Price, Shields, Niemann, Davis, Hellickson

EDIT

When I thought about it, it's better for us to discuss the best rotations in a single thread. And without me having to spew stats we could just discuss it in this thread.

My top rotations from each division go as follows.

AL East - Rays, Red Sox , Yankees, Jays, O's

AL Central - Tigers, White Sox, Twins, Indians, Royals (tough ranking these)

AL West - A's, Angels, Rangers, Mariners

Another tough one because the Mariners have arguably have the best American League pitcher, and yet the rest of their rotation is questionable. The A's have a strong five of Anderson, Cahill, Gonzalez, Braden, and Harden. The Rangers lost Lee, but still have CJ Wilson and other guys that looked good last year. The Halo's have Haren, but I'm a little confused if they have a solid #2.

NL East - Phillies, Braves, Marlins, Mets, Nationals

NL Central - Brewers, Reds, Cardinals, Cubs, Astros, Pirates (blame Wainwright's injury)

NL West - Giants, Rockies, Padres, Dodgers, Diamondbacks

Not sure if you switch the Padres with the Rockies, but it's debatable.

I don't expect Price to improve

His FIP shows regression and he lost a great LF in Crawford and a good 1B in Pena. Take in the fact that Crawford is getting replaced by Johnny Damon and his outfield defense is not as good as last year.

Plus he lost Bartlett and he’s a positive UZR/150 for his career

You'd expect a young pitcher like that to regress?

I guess it depends on how much time Damon’s in left. But I don’t think that’ll kill his numbers. His regression over the year is probably a result of not pitching that many innings, ever.

I still think he's a great pitcher

but I don’t think he’s a sub 3 ERA in the AL East kind of pitcher, especially with the losses of Crawford, Pena and Bartlett.

And the innings thing. Definitely possible.

Considering dan Johnson and Reid Brignac are good fielders

the IF should be fine. LF he might have some extra base hits here and there with Damon out there but overall I don’t think Johnny will be out there too much to kill him.

I mean if Desmond Jennings is their LF soon, like he may be, that’s really an upgrade from Crawford.

I’ve got to agree with him. I don’t think Price’s performance will be worse, but his results probably will be. Swapping Carl Crawford for Johnny Damon is a huge hit to their defense. Also, he had a really low hr/fb rate, that will most likely rise near league average. If I had to guess his ERA this season, I’d say 3.3.

Boston's lineup isn't exactly set either

There’s been rumblings that Dice-K might be ineffective and Aceves or Wakefield could win a rotation spot, depending on how Dice-K finishes out the spring.

Bleacher Report’s analysis

His one good game.

It seems like he may or may not be the Red Sox #5 pitcher for the 2011 season. I think their overall rotation projections change greatly whether he’s in the rotation or not.

by phonty on Mar 19, 2011 9:02 PM EDT reply actions

No teams overall rotation projections ever change depending on their 5th starter.

The overall quality of 5th starters in the league is horrendous. Daisuke has shown that he can provide much better than that bar, basically in spurts of dominance connected by stretches of futility. But that’s better that the consistent futility that most 5th starters give up.

Assume that the Yankees had gotten Lee. Then their 5th starter battle would have come down to Garcia vs. Colon vs. Nova, that’s pretty much what the Red Sox 5th starter “battle” is like at this point.

I don't think you're giving the Red Sox bullpen enough credit.

Sure, who knows what’s going to happen with Papelbon. But they still have one of the game’s best young relievers in Bard, a very good former-closer in Jenks, a good middle-reliever in Wheeler, and a ton of depth in Aceves/Hill/Miller/Doubront/Wakefield/Atchison. Jenks was hit with an incredibly unlucky year last year, posting a >10 K/9 with about 3 BB/9 and a great 58 GB%, his only problem was his 65 LOB% and .345 BABIP.

Basically, they have question marks in Papelbon and who is going to be their lefty, but they have a really good set-up crew and a lot of depth. It’s not going to be as good as the Yankees bullpen, but it’ll be one of the better ones in the AL.

by ThePanda on Mar 19, 2011 9:04 PM EDT reply actions

Having your closer as a question mark automatically means your bullpen is shaky. Bard is ok, but he walks a lot of guys and was the beneficiary of some babip luck. His ERA will probably be higher this year, in the upper twos or lower threes. Jenks will likely be middle threes. Relievers, of course, benefit from or are cursed by small sample sizes, so they could swing drastically in either direction, but that’s where I would put their likely mean points.

somebody up top said hughes and buchholz is “about a wash”…I love hughes and think he’ll definitely improve off of last year and hopefully have a long successful career, but c’mon look at last year numbers.

by MichaelGGBGrabow on Mar 20, 2011 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

looking at last year's numbers

Buchholz allowed way too many baserunners and didn’t strike out enough batters to sustain the ERA he did.

He had a WHIP of 1.2, which is good, but coupled with a K/9 of 6.2, you won’t see guys with 2.33 ERAs.

7.4 H/9, and a 3.5 BB/9. That’s nearly 11 batters on base per 9. 11 baserunners per 9 does not correlate well with a 2.33 ERA. He needs to up his K/9 and allow less baserunners to keep his ERA int he low 2s

He will regress because Buchholtz’s true talent level is not a 2.3 ERA pitcher. Among other things, his hr/fb rate was 5%, which will rise closer to major league average. It’s worth noting that his career rate prior to last year was 15%.

Mine is terrible, but I’m doing fine in possible points. Still have three of my final four teams left, I feel fine about it.

I picked Duke being a team filled with pretentious pricks. Nailed it!

Wow, that’s odd. Not my fault, I copied the bracket through the Yahoo autofill from my other league and they must have switched it or something.

it’s possible it could become something. I broke my rib snowboarding, rebroke it about a month later…coughing. It still bothers me and i’m not ya know…pitching

Yeah, my pick of the Yankees over Giants was close last year, so maybe Dodgers over (insert AL team that Barndon hasn’t figured out yet) will work this year!

I think that this team is better than that team.

No no! I think that this other team is better than that team.

by Lord Duggan on Mar 20, 2011 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I think

the multitude of comments about which pitcher or which team’s rotation is better than another pitcher or rotation without providing data to back up the position (especially when refuting another person’s position) leads to an empty argument and a lot of back and forth of “I think” and “well, I think” and no progress in either educating the opposing viewpoint or changing their position.

We’re all guilty of it at some point, some more than others. I admit, my posts weren’t the most informative in this discussion.

My question is: What’s the point of a “rotation roundup” if not all the rotations are presented and comparative stats are provided, so readers can draw their own conclusions for the discussion? Now it’s been renamed to “Best rotations in the MLB” which still begs the author to present and evaluate all the rotations for all 30 teams.

I agree with this

This post is just rehashing information we have already heard so many times. There’s nothing new here to learn about. Blue Jays and Orioles would be new. Also it went from statistical based to the authors opinion with no information to back it up, so what’s the point? Honestly this post reads like a narration of a stats line rather than an interpretations of said stats. This has opened up the “you’re wrong, no you’re wrong” discussion here.

(Please take this as constructive criticism for future posts, not as a personal attack)

The A's and Giants are going to look great result-wise.

But you have to consider their home parks. They both play in 2 of the most pitcher-friendly parks, and that helps their results a lot. Pretty much every pitcher on both of those staffs outperformed their peripherals because of that. Put Lester or CC in the Giants ballpark (and facing pitchers) and they’d become otherworldly.
