Off Season Calorie Consumption: Pitchers & Catchers Edition
A lot has been made of CC Sabathia's 25 pound weight loss and the fact that Joba Chamberlain has put on 15 pounds of "muscle", but do these numbers pass the eye test? Here are some recent pictures of our players and their new physiques:
Everyone's favorite Carb Craving pitcher apparently gave up eating Cap'n Crunch on his way to losing 25 pounds this off season. Buster Olney originally reported that CC had lost 30 pounds, while Cashman said he thought it looked to be about half of that. To me, CC definitely looks thinner, but I still don't think we have to worry about taking his buffet table off the budget anytime soon.
A week ago, Brian Costello tweeted that it appeared Jesus Montero had lost weight. Last summer, Baby Jesus struggled a little while adjusting to AAA and it was reported that he seemed to be out of shape. While any weight he lost would definitely not be on the same scale as CC's, I think he looks more fit which can only help him in his quest to make a big impression during Spring Training.

Then there's Joba. Instead of losing weight this off season, Joba was said to have put on about 15 pounds of muscle. I was skeptical to begin with about the muscle part and after seeing a recent picture, I'm still pretty uncertain that the weight added was the good kind. Of course Joba says he feels stronger, and maybe there is some muscle in there somewhere, but I definitely don't think he fits into the "best shape of my life" overused off season cliche. I'm not sure what this means for Joba this season but I don't think it's going to be a positive thing.
At least he's not as big as another potential Yankee pitcher I guess...

awesome post
though the picture of Joba isn’t showing for me.
One thing I’ve always liked about Girardi’s philosophy is making his players leaner and faster on the bases. Posada and Swisher both trimmed down in the last two offseasons (if I recall correctly) and it definitely improves overall health to be lighter and stronger.
I just tried to reupload the Joba picture, does it work now?

Wow, CC seriously looks thinner.
He reminds me of me, except not as white and with far more pitching talent. Oh, and money.

Man that looks like more than 25 to me
He really looks better.

Someones's been feeding Joba Crackerjacks
Don’t see the extra pounds hurting his stamina. If your job is to pitch 4 innings a week, stamina is not really an issue. Extra strength might help his speed, but the real issue is the increased injury risk.
The thinner CC has definitely got to be a good idea!

Some of us are forgetting just how young this guy is.

Unless you're trying to balance a small airplane carrying the whole team, what difference does it make?
Physical size of pitchers correlates to nothing except catering bill.
The position players, who sometimes need to chase the ball around, or themselves around the bases, sure, but pitchers? I give you Mickey Lolich, El Guapo, David Wells, etc etc etc

Does it matter in the bigger picture of how they pitch this season? Who knows, maybe not.
Do I think it’s interesting to talk about and see how a player takes care of himself during the off season? Yes.

CC had knee surgery
Believe me! Reduced weight reduces knee problems. He has a better chance to stay healthy.

I didn't even recognize Joba with the beard....
For every action, there is a corresponding over-reaction.
CC has lost a lot
However, lets be honest, the guy is still the fattest on the team. Although Joba seems to be trying to make a darkhorse run for that title.
This is all assuming of course, that Bartolo Colon is not on the team. If he is, I’m afraid CC has lost his honor and it will take more than a few buffets to get it back. Colon is almost just as heavy, except 5 11 instead of 6 7.
