Breaking MLB News: Albert Pujols Signs With Angels, Yankees Select Brad Meyers In Rule V Draft

The newest Los Angeles Angel of Anaheim. Wow.

Update: Angels have now signed C.J. Wilson for 5 years $75 million.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim signed Albert Pujols to a ten year, $250-260 Million deal today, shocking the baseball world.

Wow. I don't think this is a good move for MLB, but as a Yankees fan I can't complain.

As for the Angels, after finishing second, or third, or worse for every free agent they have really wanted over the last few seasons, they finally got their guy.

I'm shocked. Do you think this is just a money move, or what?

In other news, the Yankees selected Washington Nationals RHP Brad Meyers in the Rule V Draft.

Meyers, a right handed relief pitcher, pitched to a 3.48 ERA last season in AAA Syracuse, and gave up 110 hits in 95 innings pitched.

Here's what Baseball America had to say:

take RHP Brad Meyers. Command/bullpen type with 87-91 fastball & three fringy secondary pitches.

The Yankees also traded for Kansas City Royals' Rule V selection, LHP Cesar Cabral of the Red Sox. Baseball America said:

LHP Cesar Cabral. RP type with low-90s fastball, changeup better than breaking ball. Rule 5ed last year.

The Yankees are trying to get a minor league deal done with outfielder Dewayne Wise.

Stay tuned throughout the day for more.

I was honestly shocked at the news

Thought he’d be a lifer in St. Louis. Kind of disappointed. It makes sense, though. DHing will help him prolong his career and continue to get at-bats when he’s 55.

that would be pretty cool

And would make the AL West an awful lot more watchable than the snore-fest it’s been.

Respect was probably a big deal here

I think when the story comes out, it will be that Pujols was angry that the Cardinals didn’t respect him up front.

From the Cardinals perspective, no way do you sign a 31-yo 1B to a 10 year deal for 25/per. So I guess there’s that.

And it does make sense for him to be able to transition to DH as he gets older.

You’d have to assume so. I’d imagine a decent package including one of those guys could fetch some decent arms if they don’t (hell, even if they do) get Wilson.

If Montero can do it, I’m sure Trumbo can.

I guess

but on the other hand, how do you let him walk away after the World Series and still maintain fan interest? Maybe they figure the “greatest fans in sports” will come out no matter how many Scott Spiezios and Skip Schumakers they run out.

Yes, shocked

I would have bet a chunk of cash on Pujols sticking with the Cardinals. And yes, I think it was a money move, and honestly, lost a little “love” for Pujols.

I think he's always been kind of a jerk

It’s just harder to see it from St. Louis than NY or LA. Smaller town, less spotlight.

He’s on pace to be one of the 20 greatest players of all-time, and wanted to get paid for it.

by PortlandYankee on Dec 8, 2011 10:42 AM EST up reply actions

i agree

Now he’s set up to be the next Alex Rodriguez over aging overpaid stars

on the other hand

the Dodgers are lost, the Padres are irrelevant… no professional football team except USC. A lot of room for a sports star and community guy, a la Gretzky.

I can't blame Pujols

Loyalty is important, but is it worth 30-40 million less? I think this deal has potential to albatross on the Angels anyway.

Happy for Pujols

He’s either the best or 2nd best player of my lifetime, I’m glad he was able to get himself this kind of contract, even if it isn’t a smart contract for the team.

I’m sure this was mainly a money decision, as this is 30-40 mil more than the Cards were offering, but realistically, he’s better off going to the AL where he can DH the last 4 or 5 years of his career. He also doesn’t have to go back to St. Louis as a visitor (unless the Angels go there this year. I have no idea) which was probably something he was happy about.

It sucks for the Cardinals and their fans, but they were lucky to have Pujols for 11 seasons. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with him not wanting to take less money to stay.

The Angels may regret this in a few years, but with their starting pitching and now a vastly improved offense, that’s a scary team in 2012.

Every major free agent that’s signed so far has gotten more years than they should have. Note to Yankees: Stay out of the free agent market. Go after Darvish.

and

to be selfish, better there than with the Red Nex or Dodgers.

It’s surprisingly easy for folks to claim they’d take less money. Those opinions are only valid if given by someone who’s actually turned down $20M or so to keep a lower-paying job.

orioles expected to announce trade later today. It’s real close.

Makes people shut up about the whole “Yankees buy Championships”. Pujols is an ass also…That is all

Angels and Marlins are trying their best

to take that title. I think the Yankees have been so much behind the scenes the last two off seasons that they’ve pretty much already relinquished the title.

I'd agree

But we’ll see, if the Yanks do something like get Darvish, I’m sure everyone will bitch and moan about it.

If they have the money, spend it

Nothing wrong with them doing what they’re doing. In fact, I applaud it. Too many owners have insanely tight purse strings and it negatively impacts the team (see: Baltimore Orioles). I’m excited to see some (hopeful) competition for the NL East crown this year, and as for the Angels…well…I don’t recognize the validity of west coast sports.

by bango31 on Dec 8, 2011 11:22 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

Spend freely, I encourage all teams to do it, but I don’t want to hear about how the Yankees are “monsters” and “ruining the game” when they aren’t the only ones doing it.

Eh, not that big of a deal

People will always find a reason to hate the Yankees and the money will always be part of it for some of those people. The difference betweeen what these teams are doing this year and what the Yankees have made a habit out of doing is that the Yanks can sustain this kind of spending and can survive horrible contracts (i.e., Pavano), whereas other teams cannot. And even if people continue to accuse the Yankees of ruining the game with their big payrolls, which they will, it really doesn’t matter. Being hated is half the fun.
