Yankees/MLB Hot Stove Report: Hanley Won't Move, Pujols, Kuroda OK On East Coast

The chance that Hanley Ramirez gets traded seems higher by the day. He informed team officials that he does not want to play third base. It makes one appreciate A-Rod just a little more.

He’s not WRONG to not want to play another position when his team signed another shortstop despite already having one.

If you’re going purely on talent, Jeter should have moved to 3rd when we traded for A-Rod. No one expected him to because he was already the Yankee shortstop.

oh i see what you're saying

but business is business i suppose.

I wonder what it would be like if Jeter moved to third…

by jetanumba2 on Dec 6, 2011 7:14 PM EST up reply actions

No way would that ever happen

I can’t see many incumbents doing that, specially not when they’re one of the biggest superstars in the sport, not just on their team. And Jeter was that in 2004.

The Marlins are certainly within their rights to upgrade the position, especially because they have concerns about Hanley’s size and his ability to play shortstop going forward. However, Hanley doesn’t really have to do them a solid by moving to 3rd after they kind of shit on him. They should have gauged his internet in switching positions beforehand so they could have already been working on something if he wasn’t going to be amicable, instead of finding all this out after the fact.

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Dec 6, 2011 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

I'm sure they had some idea of what would happen

instead of going blindly through this. At least I hope. A team doesn’t just trade a franchise player at the drop of a hat, especially if they just replaced him with a more expensive, marginally better version of himself. Reyes and Ramirez would be more interesting for the 2012 Marlins than Reyes and dumping Ramirez.

by jetanumba2 on Dec 6, 2011 7:31 PM EST up reply actions

If Hanley isn’t going to play 3rd, I’m not sure they have a lot of choice. He’s the kind of player who I think could make their lives hell if they don’t give him what he wants, which at this point, is to be traded.

Jesus Montero fangirl

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Dec 6, 2011 7:33 PM EST up reply actions

that's very true

but they need to sit down with him and work it out now, that way they don’t go into desperation mode trying to find someone to take him and then get nothing.

If I was the Marlins I would sit down and talk to Hanley and try to work this all out, but if he doesn’t want to play another position I would look around for someone to take him soon. The Giants (Matt Cain) and Braves (any of their pitchers) are the first people I’d call.

by jetanumba2 on Dec 6, 2011 7:37 PM EST up reply actions

Marlins, who inquired about Gio Gonzalez, also have some interest inWandy Rodriguez

Hanley for Wandy? Yikes to that trade. I think the Astros would be the only winners of that.

by jetanumba2 on Dec 6, 2011 7:43 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think Hanley would be too pleased

I dont think he is wrong to want to stay at his position..

i understand Reyes is the far superior player, but im sure the Marlins didnt even talk to Hanley before signing reyes.. and he has been there a long time… So why should he give them the easy way out when they basically stuck a shiv in his back by signing reyes.

concerning the Gardner rumor
According to baseball sources, the Yankees shot down the Nats’ attempts to deal for Gardner

Does this mean he’s not getting traded or Cashman likes what the A’s have better?

Most Nats fans want to build an offer around LHP John Lannan

Lannan’s a solid #4 or a good #5 pitcher, but I keep telling the Nats fans that there is no way the Yankees take that deal. I’d be pretty steamed if they did, actually.

How did there just happen to be a graph of all three of these lying around? Unless you made this. Can fangraphs do that?

Gio may have a high Whip, but he does other things well that the other two guys don’t do as well. He strikes out a lot of guys too, which Cahill doesn’t. Anderson is probably better than each but he’s not all that durable.

It’s really not enough of a difference to even remark on. Certainly not enough to claim that Gio is better than them.

Jesus Montero fangirl

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Dec 6, 2011 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

Thats not the only reason

Gio in 2010: 200 innings, 171 hits, 7.67 K/9, 7.4% HR rate, 3.23 ERA and a WAR of 3.2

Gio in 2011: 202 innings, 175 hits, 8.78 K/9, 8.9% HR rate, 3.12 ERA, and a WAR of 3.5 (which I think is lower than it should be, but whatever).

Cahill in 2010: 196 innings, 155 hits, 5.40 K/9, 11.2% HR rate, 2.97 ERA and a WAR of 2.2

Cahill in 2011: 207 innings, 214 hits, 6.37 K/9, 11.6% HR rate, 4.16 ERA, and a WAR of 2.5.

Cahill gives up far more hits, strikes out less, gives up home runs at a higher rate, and his ERA is a full run higher in 2011. Cahill also got worse from 2010 to 2011 while Gio got better (though the WAR is similar from one year to the next in both players). I think Gio’s a better pitcher.

I never said either were better than Anderson- I just think Anderson’s injuries make him less desirable in a trade than Gio or Cahill.

He's a good pitcher

Probably not an ace, but he’s young, has had rising strikeout totals in each of the last two years, a very good ERA, relatively low BAA and he pitches a lot of innings. And he’ll probably just keep getting better. I wouldn’t trade huge prospects for him, but at the right price I think he’d be an excellent #2 starter.

I kind of thought he would be closer to A-Rod money

Maybe not the $300, but a lot more than $200

But what do I know

Arod's conract probably scared some people

also a power hitting SS/3B with 50 hr potential is harder to find than a 1st basemen i guess.

Looks like the Angels are the mystery team
The competition for the biggest prize on the free agent market doesn’t appear to be the two-horse race we expected. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (via Twitter) that the Angels are also pursuing Albert Pujols. Joel Sherman of the New York Post adds that an AL official insisted to him today that the Angels were in on Pujols, though an official with the Halos denied it (Twitter links).

I doubt he's going anywhere

I’d put money on St. Louis. Lots of it.

It would be pretty funny

If Hanley Ramirez’s only appearance in a Miami Marlins uniform was the unveiling.

Ramon Ramirez is a really nice pickup

though they replaced Pagan with an older, crappier version of Pagan.

This offseason isn't over yet

And I can’t remember the last offseason the Yankees did absolutely nothing. Something significant, whether it’s a trade or a FA signing, is going to happen to this team before the end of this offseason. It’s just how it works with this team.

There was last offseason...

But the Steinbrenners were so horrified by the idea of not spending money that they took $37 million and set it on fire in the form of Rafael Soriano.

So I’m sure we can expect something similar.

by Let's Talk About Tex Baby on Dec 6, 2011 10:26 PM EST up reply actions

I supported signing Soriano last offseason, but not to the price of 11 million dollars a year, and the opt out clauses just make it worse. Essentially they bid against themselves for him, and now he’s taking up money that could go to a need this offseason.

Best case scenario for him is he has a dominant season, helps the Yankees win a championship by playing a key role out of the bullpen, and then promptly opts out.

Still, point is, something will happen this offseason. Whether it’s smart or not, there will be a significant transaction with the Yankees by the time pitchers and catchers report. I just hope it’s a good one.

And they signed Freddy, and picked up options for Cano and Swisher

But, they all amount to keeping guys that were on the 2011 roster. I’ll be shocked if there is not a single new face on the opening day 25 man roster in 2012.
