MLB News: High Priced Starters, A Couple Of Trades, And Albert Pujols Mania

MIAMI GARDENS, FL - AUGUST 06: Albert Pujols #5 of the St. Louis Cardinals hits during a game against the Florida Marlins at Sun Life Stadium on August 6, 2011 in Miami Gardens, Florida. (Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)

First of all, the BBWAA elected Bob Elliot of the Toronto Sun into the writers wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame today, as Elliot won the Spink Award. Congratulations to him, from what I have read it is a well deserved honor.

The BBWAA granted FanGraphs accreditation, but denied SB Nation today. Some members cited SB Nation only being around since July. Wow.

The Colorado Rockies acquired Kevin Slowey from the Minnesota Twins today, in a move that has been rumored for a very long time.

The Toronto Blue Jays traded for their likely closer of the present and future, netting Sergio Santos from the Chicago White Sox for top pitching prospect Nestor Molina. Kenny Williams then said this:

KW "this is the start of a rebuilding." !!!
The White Sox are more likely than not to deal away John Danks and/or Gavin Floyd, and the Yankees are interested. The Sox asked for both Manny Banuelos and Jesus Montero in a deal for Danks. I could see the White Sox getting Betances+Romine.

If Gio Gonzalez is traded, look for the Yankees to try to get a third team involved. Realistically the Marlins are in the best position to trade for Gonzalez if they sign Pujols, (can trade Gaby Sanchez to the A's) but the Yankees, Red Sox, and Royals are also in the mix.

We could hear Albert Pujols' decision today, and the Marlins seem like the frontrunners right now. Insane.

The Marlins are offering Pujols a 10 year contract!

Link at Yahoo!

The Marlins on Monday night increased the term of their offer from nine to 10 years. The contract presumably would be worth more than $200 million.

apparently this is what they do in Miami now

Wouldnt it be ironic

If they went from received luxury tax to paying it in the span of one season?

Not saying i see their payroll increasing THAT much, but at the rate theyve been signing this offseason….

by GriffMan on Dec 6, 2011 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

i forgot

they were basically starting with a payroll that wouldnt even cover the tax of A-rod’s salary. Still an ironic thought, maybe thats just me

by GriffMan on Dec 6, 2011 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

They just make superteams down there. Its actually pretty annoying watching teams trying to copy us

by i says on Dec 6, 2011 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

Actually the Marlins buy a title then blow up the team

Reaping the spike in ticket sales and revenue for the championships while then cashing revenue sharing checks in between. That system has worked twice for them and they’re trying for the trifecta – although the whiplash it’s created for fans there hasn’t helped their efforts to actually build their fanbase. With the CBA change it will be interesting to see whether they can keep this up in the new world.

by d_c_guy on Dec 6, 2011 5:17 PM EST up reply actions

As someone who wears baseball blinders...

…meaning I am somewhat blind to MLB save for the Yankees, will these Marlin acquisitions (assuming they get Pujols) push them over the top enough to get to (and win) the World Series?

I don’t know how good (or bad) they were last year, so I don’t know if an influx of a few key pieces are enough or if this is still a multi-year rebuild.

What say you fellow PSA folks that are more knowledgeable than I?

you could argue that

but Phillies will still be the team to beat, despite their age. They will probably have the best lineup in the NL East, but no way their pitching (even with Johnson back) trumps the Phillies. Will make for an interesting race, and if the second wildcard comes into play, its almost a sure bet it comes from that divison

by GriffMan on Dec 6, 2011 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

I still do not think they have the pitching. The offense will be crazy good, though. Possibly best in bigs if Morrison develops.

And Johnson-Sanchez-Nolasco-Volstad isn’t all that bad. If they bring back Javy I would even say that their rotation is above average.

Good point

still a damn good offense there, and for the most part YOUNG which is key to a rebuild. The rotation looks good on paper but im curious how it all shakes out during the season. One more solid arm would do wonder for their playoff chances

Not yet they aren't

His value is at an all-time low right now. Multiple injuries, huge K rate spike, no power. Why trade him when there are two years left on that contract and he’s the most recognizable star on your team? Look for them to trade him at the deadline next year, if he’s playing well. Wright’s option (for 2014) expires if he’s traded to another team, so they’ll have to trade him next year, or hope they get somebody to take him after he’s been resigned in 2014.

I have to agree

I like Soriano and I think he’s a good pitcher, but I can’t pretend it wouldn’t have been nice to have 11 million more to spend.

Unloading that contract is impossible though, so best case scenario is he has a 2010-like season next year as the setup guy or seventh inning guy or whatever he is and then he opts out. If that happens do they get the pick back or is that different under the new CBA?

I was talking more about the change in the way the Marlins go about things

Not really Pujols in particular, but I think it’s great that a team that up until this point absolutely refused to spend money now are major players in the free agent market for possibly many years. It’s a nice change. I have nothing against that team so I’m happy for the fans down there.

Pujols… yea, I think it would be best if he went to the Cardinals. But hey, if he goes to Florida and he helps them bring the Phillies down even more I won’t be too upset about it.

Not like this

They’ve never done it to this extent all at one time. And the fact that it’s coming with the new name, new uniforms (LOL) and the new stadium leads me to believe that it might be a more permanent change.

I don’t think it’s that they don’t have fans, but that the fans they do have don’t care to come to the games because the stadium is horrible and they’ve had a bad team. Now they get a new stadium with a bunch of shiny new top notch free agents that they can build around. People will come just for that, and if they win, that alone will develop some more fans.

I think one-team players going away from teams that can afford to re-sign them is bad for baseball

Only, it’s always trickier with your own players. No one wants to make a move because of the perceived loss in leverage. A new team doesn’t have that problem, has a “need”, and is willing to overpay because they don’t know the player already. I liked that Mauer stayed with the Twins, even though injuries have made that contract look like an absolute albatross, and I hope Pujols doesn’t become a Miami Marlin. God, those uniforms.

Via NY Baseball Digest regarding Gio Gonzalez
A source down at the Winter Meetings informed me of a 3-way deal being discussed between the Yankees, Oakland, and Kansas City. The players discussed were:

Yankees get: Gio Gonzalez

A’s get: LF Brett Gardner from Yanks, 1B Clint Robinson from Royals.

Royals get: RHP David Phelps, OF Michael Taylor, and a PTBNL from Yanks that is expected to be off 40-man roster.

Source quotes Yanks rep as indicating Cashman being comfortable "leaving without doing anything" and knowing "teams needs are more than our wants."

Also, Oakland is not interested in Jesus Montero as they don’t believe he could handle a young staff, or that his bat will be as potent in a larger park.

Is this a legitimate possibility?

I'd feel better if it was Swisher in Gardner's place

I know that Billy Beane always loved Swish. But otherwise… this would be a much better deal than I would have anticipated. I thought it would start with Montero+ at least one of the Killer Bs, and GGBG/Swisher plus a few mid level guys like David Phelps. Given the need for pitching, I’d probably make this trade if this actually is legitimate. I know you’re not a huge fan of Gio though.

LH 1B hitting prospect for the Royals. He’s probably ML-ready but blocked by Eric Hosmer.

Hmm...

I might be able to get on board with that, but I just don’t know how Gio Gonzalez would do in a non-pitcher’s park. Plus Gardner is insanely valuable on defense, is good at getting on base, and of course is cheap.

If I were Cash, I’d say a tough no, but I’m not so…

Yea thats where I'd be

Probably more to a reluctant yes due to the need of pitching, but I don’t know…

I’m not even sure how legitimate this rumor is. Is NY Baseball Digest usually a reliable place for information?

NY Baseball Digest is pretty good

I love “Humor in Uniform.” Wait, is that a different Digest?

What I find funny about this

is that the Yankees are viewed as the Evil Empire, and look what we’d actually be doing for other teams if this deal goes through.

This isn't a deal that would kill them

Gardner’s great, but I think really highly of Gio since he’s so young, has proven up to this point to be very durable and a true innings eater and I think would be a great solution to the rotation problems. The question is, is that worth creating a possible problem in the outfield? Because it’s no guarantee Swisher resigns, and the outfield prospects are pretty far away.

Thats a question there’s no answer to right now, and thats why for me I think it would be a difficult decision if this trade is actually being discussed.

No deal will kill the Yankees

My point is that if you look at the talent we’d be giving up to get Gio in this deal, it’s a deal that benefits them as much or more than it does us.

I don't think the pitching problem is THAT big of a problem

its not worth ruining a perfectly good, relatively cheap outfield. People just panic over the rotation because it isn’t sexy. CC-Nova-Burnett-Hughes-Garcia will be fine. If something goes wrong we have alternatives and could always figure out a trade later.

New Guy Here, making my first post

I’m sure the A’s won’t take either of the B’s because they already have a ton of pitchers in there system, but I would hate to lose Brett the Jet

To be quite honest, I'd be mad

But not in the least bit surprised. This is the type of team the Yankees are. This is what they tend to do, and anyone expecting anything else from this organization clearly hasn’t followed them for that long

This would coincide with the Cespedes rumors

If a trade involving Gardner occurs, the Yankees I assume would go hard after Yoenis (yea, I said hard IGYAR) and try and fill that spot in left field.

I don’t know too much about Cespedes though, so I’m not sure if he’d be a viable replacement, or if Cespedes+Gio would be more valuable to the Yankees than Gardner by himself.

Really though

There are several pitchers on the open market that we wouldn’t have to trade players for. Trading Gardner for Gio solves one problem but creates another. I also don’t understand that trade from the A’s perspective.

by Briceratops on Dec 6, 2011 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

The A’s are legitimately desperate for outfielders, but I don’t think they make that deal.

yeah thats a pretty weak return for someone like Gio

I don’t think he’s as good as others here do, but I would assume he would bring in at least another player
