Yankees and MLB Hot Stove: Giving Manny a Headline

Mood Music - Ich Will by Rammstein

Manny Ramirez has expressed interest in making a return to professional baseball
You've probably already heard about this, but Manny Ramirez is thinking about a comeback. I'm probably greatly in the minority with this opinion, but I like Manny and would love for something to come of this. It probably won't, with teams being turned off because he would need to serve a 100-game suspension and is, you know, Manny Ramirez.

Winter Meetings Speculation from the Star-Ledger
Look for the news around the biggest targets to start circling faster and faster now that the winter meetings are upon us. Speaking of that:

The Miami Marlins have agreed to a six year deal with Jose Reyes for a reported $106MM
The Marlins have been making a lot of waves early in the off-season. It will be interesting to see what their team looks like on opening day.

Six teams are rumored to be interested in the immortal Luis Ayala
Oh.

Pedro Martinez plans to officially announce his retirement
I hear he was pretty good for a while.

Ayala could probably help a number of teams improve their middle relief

But any team that thinks it’s getting a legitimate 2.00 ERA guy is going to be in for a suprise.

it makes sense

If he hadn’t retired last year, he would have served more than 50 games of his suspension…so I think it’s fair enough.

Besides, we all know he’ll fail the test again with newer, stricter drug policies.

Always a way to dodge suspensions. Edinson Volquez got to wait out his 50-game suspension while he was on the DL.

I don't think so

By “retiring”, he missed around 150 games last season, and forfeited at least 95% of his $2 million salary. Six of one, half dozen of another I say, especially if he sits out the first 50 games of 2012.

Jesus Montero has to be a full-time catcher, or the Yankees have to trade him. One or the other. Based on the age and contracts of the other players on this team, that's the only place he fits long-term on the Yankees roster.

by 3460kuri on Dec 5, 2011 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

So by sitting out 150 games

and losing 90+% of his salary for ‘11, and missing 50 in ’12, thus depreciating his value further for whoever signs him, he’s punished less than had he just sat the 100…

gonna go with no on this

this is my point

Did he benefit financially? Of course not. But what did he do? He screwed over his team, for whom he still could have played some games after serving the suspension. Choosing to retire instead of facing his punishment in my mind was quitting and refusing to take responsibility for what he’d done. Yes, it ended up costing him more in the long run. And it should have, because it was a stupid thing to do.

It was the Rays.

They had it coming.

I feel bad for the Mets & their fans

I hate to see any team lose their favorite star players like this.

"WHO WOULD LEAD?! THE CLOWN?!"

by I'mGivingYouARaise on Dec 5, 2011 1:39 PM EST reply actions

it's not like the Mets never swooped in and spent money on someone else's free agent

I generally prefer it when small-market stars stay with their “home” franchise, but when another big-market team loses out, it’s just the way things are. And the fact that it’s happening to the Mets is just a bonus.

by long time listener on Dec 5, 2011 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

Frankly, I think they made the right move

Reyes is a great player, but he does carry an injury concern and the Mets are nowhere near contention, so it makes little sense for a /450 to shell out elite-shortstop money…..which is of course exactly what the Marlins just did. At least they have a new stadium to try to promote.

Jesus Montero has to be a full-time catcher, or the Yankees have to trade him. One or the other. Based on the age and contracts of the other players on this team, that's the only place he fits long-term on the Yankees roster.

edit - "a .450 team"

Oh they definitely made the right move in not signing him

But the reasons behind why they couldn’t still do suck, IMO

ManRam is negotiating a deal to end his suspension immediately, since he has already sat out over 200 games.

(check the AP). I can’t imagine that he has anything left in the tank, but he is amusing to have around when he’s not an affront to the game.

He's also facing criminal charges for spousal abuse, according to the four-letter network article

His defense being, to paraphrase, “I didn’t slap her, I just grabbed her arms and banged her head against something”.

It disturbs me that the Yankees are one of the teams interested in Ayala

As for Manny, I really don’t care either way so long as Levine doesn’t suggest bringing him to the Yankees.

So with trying to compete and show their fans that they don’t always want to be the whipping boys of the NL East, they’ll get more attendance. Hey, they have a Shake Shack there.

I suppose it's possible the Nats can regress and the Mets get a little better

They were only three games apart last year. But with Wilson solidifying the rotation for the Nats and Reyes wearing an ugly uniform on the Marlins, I see the Mets in the cellar.

Me too.

I’m sort of undecided on Colon, but generally lean toward wanting him back. If the consensus is he just ran out of gas from the fact he hadn’t pitched a whole season in so long, then I’d like to bring him back. There is part of me that thinks that maybe the treatment just can’t withstand a whole season of work. I don’t know, but I’m generally in favor of having him back again if he can get close to the production he was giving before he went on the DL.
