Mood Music - Happy Jack by The Who

A bounty of New York Yankees related links:

Brian Cashman has challenged Bobby Valentine to join him in rappelling down a building
Valentine said "Anytime. Anywhere." This should be taken as literally as possible, for example: Green Monster, Opening Day, 5th Inning.

Hurlers Head Yankees' Meetings Wish List
As expected, the Yankees number one priority in winter meetings will be beefing up the options for the starting rotation. "We're set in a lot of places, we really are," Cashman said. "Could it be better? It's my job to try to find ways to make it better."

Yankees aim to trim payroll to $189MM by 2014
With the new Collective Bargaining Agreement taking effect, the Yankees will face even steeper taxation if they can't get their payroll below the luxury tax limit. There are only three players under contract in 2014 (with an option year for Derek Jeter): Alex Rodriguez, CC Sabathia, and Mark Teixeira. The trio are set to make $72.125MM.

Yankees Deny C.J. Wilson's Request for a Visit
This was a few days ago, but I wanted to link it because I don't really understand it. The market for Wilson does not seem to be booming and the new CBA means the Yankees would not have to forfeit a first round pick to the Texas Rangers. Meeting with him, watching him pitch, and seeing if there is any way that he can be had on the cheap seems like a no-brainer, even if it's not very likely to come to fruition. At the very least, I am surprised that Cashman has not elected to feign interest to give Wilson leverage against the rival team that he does end up signing with.

I think he reject Wilson for 2 reasons

1. Maybe to him playing this game was just not worth his time

2. Maybe Cashman is trying to put an end to the ‘Yankees have interest’ rumor that people use to drive up their price. It could be part of a larger plan to end the presumption that the Yankees will spend whatever money to buy anyone. This could help them temper expectations when they begin to dial down spending in light of the CBA

I would like if No. 2 is true

But that would require the Steinbrenners and Levine to not pull out Soriano type deals out of nowhere. And I really doubt Hank and Hal have learnt this quickly.

well i'm sure Cashman shoved that in their face

and i don’t think Hal is as irrational as his father, so maybe with that, Cash’s new deal and the new CBA, he’s gotten them to keep their paws out of his business. For now at least

If Cashman really wants Wilson on the cheap

Acting interested would be the worst way to do that. One ounce of interest and the asking price would go up $10 mn. I think Wilson needs the Yankees right now, and Cash is doing the smart thing by not going all Ruben Amaro Jr. on the market’s ass.

Sometimes No means No.

Were Wilson being reasonable, the Yanks would be interested. He’s not, so they’re not. However

...however...

…if his demands shift closer to reality, I’m sure this could change.

pursuing a free agent is like pursuing a woman

Acting too interested too soon is the worst thing you can do. Also, make sure her friends like you.

OT

Reyes signed with the Marlins, for 6/106. That’s a lot of years. I just hope we’re sensible buyers at their next fire sale.

At least get involved

Look, I’m not going to lose one second of sleep if the Yankees don’t sign Wilson, but I think they need to at least kick the tires.

I think they'll be able to do it

One nice thing about their goal to trim payroll is it likely means they’ll be focusing more on trying to use the farm and develop young players more than they have in the past. So hopefully Montero is just the beginning of young prospects who could make a difference in the majors. I’m really excited for ManBan too, whenever he gets the chance.

Cano will likely get a huge contract by 2014 as well north of 20 million a year, but everything else we can’t be sure of until that time actually comes. Is Jeter’s contract a player option or a team option? Or is it mutual? I don’t remember the details.

For 2014...

Jeter has a player option for 8 mil.

The Yankees have a club option for 16 mil.

If Jeter is the everyday SS with a .340ish wOBA

They’d be in a bind. He’d be worth $8 mn but not $16 mn.

In that case...

They’d probably both decline their options and agree on something in the middle. But the odds of him being a productive everyday shortstop at age 39/40 are pretty slim.

Play smart, not hard

I’ve been wanting the Yankees to move away from their aggressive spending for years, mainly because they were using their wallets and not their brains to make baseball decisions. If they used their money wisely, they’ll be an unstoppable juggernaut

Hard, as in...

Hardball?

I just tried to squeeze the situation into that cliche. Maybe it was only 50% appropriate.
