Yoesnis Cespedes tops on Cashman's agenda?

So I was just listening to my Sirius Radio and according to analyst Kevin Goldstein of Fan Prospectus and ESPN
the Yankee's are "big" on Caspedes. The Cuban-defector is days away from gaining residence in the Dominican Republic, though it will take a few more weeks for the paperwork to go through. If this is true it would be interesting. With Brett Gardner in left, Granderson in center, and Swisher in right; after Cash exercised the $10 million dollar option on him for this season, why would Cashman be going after Cespedes? He is ready to be slotted into an everyday lineup. I figured the Yankees would be more inclined to sign Jorge Soler, a younger and cheaper option. Now it's not that I don't like and admire Cespedes, the kid is a beast. He just released an encore to his first video, you can see it on youtube. He has some crazy talent but he is reportedly going to be asking for a hefty contract, think 6 years at $8-$10M a year. Now this could turn out to be a steal, he could be better than Granderson and you can bet that when Grandy's extension comes up it will cost the Yankees as much or more. So if Cashman pulls the trigger and signs the Cuban-phenom will he be relagated to platoon player or 4th outfielder? Not likely, if this scenario plays out I see Cash attempting to shore up the rotation by trading Swisher. There were reports earlier in the off-season of a Swisher, Nunez type deal for Jurrgens in Atlanta. As they require outfield help and a shortstop while having incredible depth at pitching this would seem an ideal situation for both parties. Imagine the lineup with Yoesnis in it. Even if Jurrgens isn't great, the lineup should be formidable enough to cover him with 5+ runs. So what do you think? Good idea/Bad idea? Pass on Cespedes and buy on Soler? Trade Swish for jurrgens?

Another potential issue...

I was just reviewing the video of Cespedes and in every clip of him on a uniform he is sporting the number 51. Big issue for me as a Yankee fan, can’t give him Bernie’s number, should be retired already. Hopefully that won’t be a big issue and he’ll just switch numbers. Just thought that was intersting as well.

i hope not...Mainly due to his age and our current OF depth

Soler would be better imo, he younger, probably cheaper and we can put him through the minors. And by the time he’s ready we can then let one of our other OFers go rather than try to fit a ball in a square peg with Cespedes since we have 3 of the better OFers int he league right now.

I think if they sign Cespedes, we'll see a trade involving GGBG for a pitcher before long

He’s their most valuable outfielder from a trade perspective, that’s why I’d not expect to see Swisher go. No pitcher worth having would be available for a package revolving around a RF in his thirties who is also not signed long term.

If Cespedes is signed

he’s going to be starting the year in the high A-ball. It’s very unlikely Swisher or Gardner will be traded to make room for someone with no stateside baseball experience. Swish could become a valuable trade piece come mid-season if Cespedes blows through the minors.

I don't trust his potential

I believe the Cuban baseball leagues are considered way worse than the Japanese leagues some were mocking when looking at Yu Darvish’s stats. I really doubt that Cespedes is that good, and I don’t want to see the Yankees take a risk on him when they’re just fine in the outfield anyway. Why spend extra money when you don’t have to? Plus Cashman keeps saying “pitching, pitching, pitching,” so it’d be stupid to flush money down the toilet on offense, which is not the problem.

imagine what we could do

with the same already potent lineup we had last year. Now imagine what we could so if we had more people like Swisher and Gardner who can get on base and work the count. THAT would be scary

I think if they sign Cespedes

they put him in the minor leagues for a season and let Swisher walk next year.
