Yu a Blue Jay? Prove it.
I keep reading all these articles about the Blue Jays winning the bid for Yu Darvish. Yet no one has confirmed it.
Rangers have reportedly been all in, well at least per an internal memo.
Yankees supposedly have submitted a modest bid.
Cubs have Theo and he did place a 51 million bid for Dice-K.
Rumors out there that Giants submitted a bid.
What I find the most interesting is that most executives in baseball believe that the Blue Jays submitted a bid in the upper 40 million range. Then reported out of Japan that the winning bid was higher than the amount posted for Dice-K. I find it hard to believe that the Blue Jays would submit this kind of money. If the winning bid is for over 51 million, as reported. So being realistic his contract will be larger than Dice-K. Probable in the neighbor hood of 5 or 6 years and between 60 to 80 million.Remember Yu is making close to 7 million a year now. If Jays were not going to give that money to a proven stud, (Roy Halladay). How can they do it now, a couple years later?
There is only one team in baseball that could absorb a contract of 110 to 130 million for a player, that just doesn't live up to the hype. That is the New York Yankees. With the constant rhetoric of pitching pitching coming out of the Yankees front office and the trade market for a stud being way too high. Then consider that this will be last year for teams to bid crazy on foreign studs or face a penalty . I wouldn't be surprised it the Yankees did made a bid it was not right up there with the highest bidder and maybe even the highest bid. For no other reasons to not allow a top notch pitcher to go to a divisional rival and or the American league champion the last two years. Because that is the Yankee way.
So Yankee fans there is hope because the fat lady has yet to sang.

Who cares?
I’m quite tired of absorbing contracts right now. A-Rod, Burnett, and even Teix to some degree.
CC was the only big free agent worth while in the past 5 years. We’ve made some good trades like the Granderson one, but stop being dumb with money.

Obviously we know nothing for sure
Yes, there is a possibility the Yankees won the bid, and despite the ridiculous amount I would be absolutely thrilled if they did. But everything we’ve heard indicates the opposite, so I’m not holding my breath on it.
I'll do whatever it takes to win games, whether it's sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game-winning shot.- Kobe Bryant

Sometimes they do, but I’d say the large majority of the time the Yankees are signing for themselves, not to block others. When they do sign to block others…I hate it.

It can be argued that Contreras was only signed to block the Red Sox, though I’m not so sure I believe that. The Yankees certainly tripled their pursuit of Contreras when they heard the Sawx were interested.

Halladay told the Jays he wouldn't re-sign
and that he wanted to be traded to a perrenial play-off team..money was never the issue if you wanted that cleared up.
If the posting fee is more than Dice-K’s, then I’m not sure anyone should be actively hoping we got him. That’s a stupid amount of money to pay to only talk to someone, even someone as good as Darvish may or may not be here.
I think he’ll be good, but no one is worth that price to me.

We need our annual overpaid contract no one could ever live up to just so we have something nice and shiny to talk about and sleep comfortably on our cool pillows.
If the Yankees bid more than $50 million just to outbid a division rival I just give up all hope in the front office.

Look at this. I’m going to bold some anonymous crap to make you look at it. See it?
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
I don't know why the Jays would go so hard for him
Even though I think they’ll end up getting Darvish, it doesn’t make sense for them. They need a bat, not an arm. They couldn’t win with Halladay, so what makes them think they can win with Yu? They’re spending $50M+ (= 2 years of Prince Fielder) just to negotiate after pinching pennies all offseason.
Whaaaaaaat?
This is one of the final pieces they need to be a contender in this division. Their hitting is totally fine. Where do they need the extra bat? And why don’t they need another good starting pitcher?
There’s not a whole lot that is the same about the Blue Jays since Halladay left. They’re a good team again.

Bautista was intentionally walked a league leading 24 times, 132 overall. An additional bat for his protection would help quite a bit. That said, they do need a starter. But who knows if a pitcher who has never pitched in the bigs is going to be that missing piece of the puzzle.
Romine!
Yeah that’s what I’m saying. They need protection for Bautista more than a gamble on a starter (though I agree that they kind of need both). Nobody else in that line up scares you – lots of solid hitters, yes, but nobody dangerous. They’re also a team that develops pitchers well, and haven’t had much success importing free agents (BJ Ryan, Kevin Gregg lol).
Escobar, Johnson, and Encarcion are good hitters. Rasmus has the potential to be one. Lawrie is a great hitter and Bautista is one of the best hitters in baseball. Their offense should be one of the better ones in baseball.

I guess we'll see
Their offence does have the potential to be very good if their hitters could have good consistent seasons. They’re prone to be inconsistent year to year, so I guess that’s the big variable. In my opinion, adding one more constant to that lineup would make them real threats.
Also depends on how Yu does obviously, because there’s no way of knowing until he gets here.
The team was 9th in the AL in OBP, .317, a bit better OPS (6th?). You mentioned a lot of “ifs”, they all need to put it together for a season. But that goes for any team. If Youk and Crawford had performed up to expectations, and Lackey was healthy and up to par, 2011 may have panned out differently. I’ve been waiting for the Blue Jay hitters to “put it all together” for a few years now, it hasn’t happened…
Romine!
They have a number of new players, though, who will have their first shot at starting a season in Toronto
Kelly Johnson is better than Hill
Colby Rasmus is new. Who does he replace? Corey Patterson? Rajai Davis? I don’t even know, but he should be better.
Lawrie is new, also.
This isn’t the same team from even 1 year ago. They are improved.

Johnson and Lawrie were both top 5 in BB%, which will help the OBP
And while Rasmus didn’t walk a ton in his time with them, he usually does, and the guys he is replacing didn’t.

Let’s just keep in mind that while Johnson and Rasmus may be “good”, they’re not proven over their careers and cannot be counted on to have great years by any stretch. I put good in quotation marks because they’re good for Toronto maybe, but us Yankee fans have a different standard for good players lol! ie. Swisher was “good” for us last year, but would have been “amazing” for another team.
by Sports Fan! on Dec 18, 2011 10:21 PM EST up reply actions
6th in OPS that will only improve with a full year of Lawrie and Johnson.
Rasmus also is a much better hitter than he performed last year.

Wrong, quite the opposite
I’ve been crowing about the Jays (see what I did there?) for the past several pre-seasons, saying they are the team to watch. Apparently, their offense has underperformed my expectations.
Romine!
Lawrie!!!
I believe he is still rookie eligible so I’m calling it right now. Brett Lawrie is going to be the Rookie of the Year. With Yu and Ricky RO leading that rotation they have a real shot at contending. Don’t sleep on Toronto.
No longer qualifies.

Oh I agree
For most teams, Darvish isn’t worth the risk, but for the Jays, it might be exactly what they need.
Don’t forget, they will have Lawrie for a full season now. That’s an additional bat right there. They also picked up Rasmus late, and if he hits anywhere near his potential, he is an addition also.
Really not sure where they’d add the bat, honestly. The entire IF is pretty strong, and Bautista and Rasmus are in the OF. There’s room for improvement, but that’s pretty solid. Like really good solid.

I honestly don't think winning a WS would be more exciting
Winning the pennant was really exciting, but beating the Yankees in the last game of the season right after the O’s beat the Sox to make it to the playoffs blew that out of the water.

I don't think you know what you're talking about.
I don’t mean that as an insult. Just if you ever experience the Rays winning the World Series I think you would backtrack on that statement.
Somehow I think I know a little more of how I feel about things than you do.
I know what it is like to be a fan of a WS winning team. It’s not even close to the same feeling as having your team written off in the offseason to make one of the greatest comebacks in the history of baseball to pass what the media was calling possibly the best team ever to make the playoffs.
Down by 7 in the 8th. Game-tying HR in the 9th. Walk off HR in extras moments after the Sox blew their lead.
That’s hard to beat, and a WS victory doesn’t necessarily top it.

I'm really happy you guys beat out the sox, but I just can't resist pointing one thing out...
The Yankees handed that game to you guys. You totally deserved it, but we didn’t exactly make our best effort to stop you guys. Sorry… had to say that!
The Yankees more egregiously handed a game to the Sox about a week earlier
And the Rays had to come back from a large deficit extremely late in the game. Yeah, the Yankees left Proctor in, and that’s terrible, but how many pitchers did they burn on their way to a 8-1 lead or whatever it was? Who else was available?
But anyways, thanks!

2003 Game 7 Beat It
and I’d still take game 6 of the 2009 World Series. Again, you have no idea what it feels like to see your team win a World Series and I 100% guarantee your attitude will change if the Rays win a WS.
I don't think you understand that most Rays fans were once fans of other teams at some point
My “other team” was the Yankees, as I was growing up in the 80s and 90s, and I saw my favorite team win a handful of WS. I’m telling you here and now that I was way more ecstatic about the Rays clinching the playoffs this past season.

A handful of WS?
The Devil Rays came out in 1998. So you were a Yankee diehard and saw the Yankees win one World Series then decided to jump ship and root for the Rays? Sure you liked the Yankees, but you never were a fan like you seem to be now of the Rays. I still stand by my original point that you have no idea what it’s like for a team you love to win a World Series.

I wouldn’t be upset if we would’ve got Darvish, but the only big money bust is AJ. People say A-Rod, but go look at his #‘s. Their nothing short of great. Last year was a bad year, i get it, but he’s 35. Tex isn’t an average person, but a HR & RBI person. He was paid a lot of money, but his great D and great power #’s pay for that
by yankeesfan1325* on Dec 19, 2011 2:13 PM EST reply actions
Depends on what qualifies as a "bust"
Like other than AJ, we don’t have any Pavano-like or Zito-like busts, but lots of guys still haven’t been worth they’re contracts. Tex has been good, but we’re paying him to hit for average too. A-Rod has been good-great most years, but we’re paying him to be the best in the game.
