Yankees/MLB Hot Stove Update - December 14, 2011

1) At 5 p.m. EST today, the timeline to submit a bid to the Nippon Ham Fighters for Japanese pitching phenom Yu Darvish ended. According to Jack Curry of the YES Network, at least one team has submitted a bid for his services. An announcement of the winning team is expected to be made tonight or tomorrow morning.

And according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Boston Red Sox didn't place a bid. So if Darvish indeed finds his way to the United States for baseball next season, it will either be with the New York Yankees or most likely outside the American League East. There's speculation that the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays may have placed a bid, but time will tell. Any thoughts on how high the bidding went? We'll have updates as we hear them.

2) Talks surrounding former New York Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran are beginning to take shape. There are apparently "at least five teams" that are serious about acquiring him, including the defending World Champion St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays and Colorado Rockies.

I'd personally be intrigued to see the Toronto Blue Jays try and land him. He would certainly help bolster a weak outfield behind Jose Bautista and have the luxury of serving in the DH spot. Beltran hasn't been in the American League since 2004 when the Kansas City Royals traded him to the Houston Astros.

Star-divide

3) As pointed out earlier today by our very own Jedi Master A-Rod, the Boston Red Sox have traded for former Yankee prospect Mark Melancon. Houston will receive shortstop Jed Lowrie and starter Kyle Weiland. Boston has already countered the loss of Lowrie by agreeing to terms with former Minnesota Twin Nick Punto.

4) Last, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Blue Jays are showing interest in 41-year-old reliever Darren Oliver. The southpaw is surprisingly still around and could very well find himself in Boston or Texas if Los Angeles and Toronto don't work out.

Aren't the Blue Jays in the AL East?
it will either be with the New York Yankees or most likely outside the American League East. There’s speculation that the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays may have placed a bid, but time will tell.

From what I’ve seen in the sports blogosphere, the favorites for Darvish are: (1) Rangers; (2) Blue Jays; (3) Nationals, with the Yankees and Mariners as dark horse teams.

I wouldn't mind him on the Mariners

That would actually open up the possibility of a Felix trade.

by PortlandYankee on Dec 14, 2011 6:31 PM EST up reply actions

As currently constituted, they would never trade Felix

However, if they get a half a season out of Darvish that makes him look like a viable replacement, they would have a Darvish-Pineda combo at the top of the rotation cheap, an expensive Felix, and they would still need bats (they have, once again, a brutal offense) to make the playoffs.

Montero + Nunez + X = Felix in that situation, I think.

by PortlandYankee on Dec 14, 2011 6:34 PM EST up reply actions

Make the playoffs this year, or in the next couple of years

At some point, Felix is no longer in their plan for contention, and becomes more valuable as a trade trip. They aren’t there today, but might be in July.

by PortlandYankee on Dec 14, 2011 6:35 PM EST up reply actions

It is possible that they move Felix toward the end of his deal if they don’t think that they can resign him and want to fully rebuild, but they are a $100MM payroll team with literally no long term deals on the books other than Felix, as they will be out from under Ichiro and Figgins in the next few years. Unless they make a big splash with Fielder/Darvish/etc., they will likely be able to make a very competitive offer to extend or resign him.

And with some of the young talent that they have coming up, it’s not out of the question to think that they could add a few bats and compete in a few years. Either way, I think that the earliest that they even entertain the idea of flipping Felix would be in the final year of his current contract (2014).

by Lord Duggan on Dec 14, 2011 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

Let's see where we are tomorrow

As currently constituted, not a viable trade.

But if the Mariners can’t get Fielder & did somehow end up w. Darvish…that might change their calculus.

by PortlandYankee on Dec 14, 2011 6:40 PM EST up reply actions

Indeed they are. I kept that there because I really don’t see the Blue Jays making a strong enough bid for him.

I can't remember if Melancon was good or not

Or worth Lowrie at the very least.

He's a reliever

That’s not great

Bell: 2.76
Madson: 3.19
Papelbon: 2.51.

by PortlandYankee on Dec 14, 2011 6:33 PM EST up reply actions

Bell 9 mil
Madson ~13 mil?
Papelbon 15 mil

Melancon 500 k

by Briceratops on Dec 14, 2011 6:36 PM EST up reply actions

Ahh, but that's not saying he's "good", just that he's "cheap"

And I agree that Boston is choosing the right strategy by paying $2 million for innings 8 & 9 and putting their resources elsewhere.

But Melancon really should be their setup guy (Bard career FIP 3.22). And I don’t think it’s inappropriate to think of them as starters with FIP+1. And a FIP of 4.47 for a starter isn’t league average.

by PortlandYankee on Dec 14, 2011 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

Damit, I was looking at 2012

Madson is actually 3.7, but some of that was a starter.

Good relievers FIP about 2.5.

But as always

He’s a relief pitcher whose contribution will always be limited. The move won’t be the difference on where they end up in the standings.

by Briceratops on Dec 14, 2011 6:45 PM EST up reply actions

If I’m GM for ANY team I bid for Darvish. Bid what you can, and hope to get lucky. No reason why the A’s shouldn’t bid a quarter and a Brad Pitt signed baseball. No reason the Meta shouldn’t bid a dinner with Mr. Met in Madoff’s old box.

Doesn’t make any sense to me to make no bid at all.

If you know you can’t pay him when you have the rights, either he’ll take a discount, or he’ll stay in Japan and you don’t have to face him.

Maybe not respectful, but wise if you ask me.

Exactly

It doesn’t make sense not to bid at all, even if they have no expectations of signing him. Thats what’s confusing to me.

What’s next then? If no Yu Darvish, are they just going to roll with what they have right now or is a trade going to show up?

I blame Soriano

Seriously. After seeing how much financial flexibility he’s taken away from them I can’t believe I supported the signing in the first place. The Yankees may have missed out on a chance to get a great young starting pitcher because they’re spending 11 million a year on their setup guy. He’s a great reliever, but a great starter is far more valuable. Especially a young one.

Pitching...pitching...pitching

Those were Cashman’s words at the start of the winter meetings on what he was going for. We all know how that turned out. So, I can’t imagine that the Yankees will just stand pat on this. Yankees win bid for Darvish with $58.3M bid.

by OldYankee Fan on Dec 14, 2011 7:45 PM EST reply actions

I'd be fine with that

The one thing the Yankees have for them here is that they make more profit than any other team in baseball, and probably in all of sports. Being the number 1 team in NYC helps with that, and then all the history they’ve had too. The posting fee doesn’t go toward the luxury tax and it’s just money, and the Yankees will always have much more of that than anybody else.

We’ll see how this all plays out.

by david d on Dec 14, 2011 7:49 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn't mind that

Problem is you’re running out of rotation spots. If they sign Darvish then Hughes is already out. If they trade for another starter then what are they going to do. Sit Nova? Unless they don’t guarantee Garcia anything like they said they would.

But the Yankees never have been exactly kind to their young pitchers recently even if they had success, and they’ve already “guaranteed” Garcia a rotation spot. Take that how you want it.

I don't think so

I think Cashman went into the meetings to see what the market was going to do with CJ and Buehrle and to see what would be left as possibilities suitors in the Darvish race. It’s just strange that they would do absolutely nothing knowing that their pitching is really not that sound. They’ve got something big planned and it’s Darvish.

I think they’ll keep ManBan, and hopefully Montero, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him moved. They have the likes of Phelps, Warren, Betances, and Sanchez and, oh it hurts so bad, Romine. A combination of some of these parts can get us a 3 type or better starter.

At this point, I’d rather just sign Kuroda or Edwin Jackson. Everyone wants an overpay for their pitchers, regardless of what they are actually worth. Keep the kids, just spend some money.

I wonder if their price goes up once Darvish goes to a team. They become the 2 most valuable FA pitchers, unless you think Oswalt is better. Their demand will likely go way up for the losers of the Darvish bidding.
