Again, we apologize for the lack of content today, folks.
Jorge Vazquez, fan favorite, yet AAAA player in the eyes of the Yankees, is nearing a deal with the Rakuten Eagles according to various Japanese reports.
Jonathan Alabaladejo, former Yankee, has signed a minor league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, picking the Diamondbacks over the New York Mets.
John McCain wants a redo of the playoffs.
Mariano Rivera sends a video to his fans on twitter.
Hiroyuki Nakajima's projections are out. Interesting.
Greg Golson signed a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals.
The Yankees will consider a long term deal for Russell Martin.
Meanwhile, the Arizona Diamondbacks are a team that jumps out at me as having a great off-season. The Diamondbacks signed Takashi Saito, in addition to trading for Trevor Cahill. The Cincinnati Reds' pickup of Andrew Brackman will work out, in my opinion, just like the signing of Jose Arredondo did in the past for the Reds.

I can't believe the Yankees might give Martin a long-term deal
I really want to see Montero try to catch
Schotty go to the Dolphins
Sometimes...
They just fall in love with these players that aren’t very good. It’s Sergio Mitre on a grander scale. I’m not saying Martin’s a fringe major leaguer like Mitre, but he’s a 1.5 WAR or so player when healthy and certainly isn’t the type of solution that’s worth not giving Montero a shot for.

Yeah Montero deserves it
I mean if he can even become so-so behind the plate he would be a huge upgrade over Martin
Schotty go to the Dolphins
Russell Martin has never had a seasonal WAR below 2, so I’m not sure where you’re coming from by saying he’s a 1.5 win player when healthy.
He’s an above average defensive catcher with a league average bat. I’m not complaining about something like that. It would just be nice to see him be consistent

It was bWAR not fWAR
I agree with your assessment – good defensive catcher, league average bat. But I don’t think that type of player warrants any kind of long term commitment especially not when he’s blocking someone like Montero.
I think a decent parallel would be after the 1998 season when the Yankees extended Scott Brosius for 3 years and traded Mike Lowell.

I just see it as this:
There’s no use in denying that the Yankees like Martin. They have since he was a Dodger and even tried trading for him while Posada was still the catcher. They want him here for at least a few more years.
Since that’s the scenario, I’m trying to look at the positives. Good defensive catcher, average bat. Also, I don’t expect it would take a lot of money to sign him to a three year deal or so.
I also like the idea of having Montero gradually earning playing time behind the plate while also getting at bats as the DH on days he is not catching. I’d rather have a guy like Martin behind the plate on those days Montero is DH’ing rather than someone else. He won’t kill the lineup with his bat and his glove will provide positive value.
I don’t see too much harm in it, especially since I don’t think Montero is ready to catch ~130 games.

I want to see how they work the two in playing-time wise. If Girardi/Cash were telling the truth and expect Montero to catch 40-ish games this year and he gets at bats as the DH, I’d love to see that. I’d be very happy if he got 500 plate appearances.
Those 40 games could be very telling. If his D is really that bad, then at worst he’s a cost controlled David Ortiz, and I’m sure no one would complain about that type of production.
It’d be nice if they waited until after they got a more formal assessment of Montero’s defense at the Major League level, but it might be more cost effective to sign Martin to a two or three year deal now rather than wait until he’s a free agent.

They could always trade Martin
if Montero proves capable with the time behind the plate that he does get.

I think the best case scenario we're looking at with Martin
Is that they’ll probably give him a 3 year deal and make Montero his backup/catching trainee.
"WHO WOULD LEAD?! THE CLOWN?!"
by I'mGivingYouARaise on Dec 13, 2011 5:52 PM EST reply actions
That might be best case scenario anyway, letting Montero gradually increase his playing time behind the plate, gain experience, learn the staff, and get at bats as the DH on days he isn’t behind the plate.
I really wouldn’t complain about that, as long as he was getting consistent at bats.

If they are going to resign him, I'd prefer a 1 or 2 year deal
But realistically it won’t be that short, so 3 would be my utmost max. Anything longer I’d consider a bad deal.

Eh, the D-Backs gave up more upside than they got in Cahill. Parker could turn out to be a legit front-end starter, and Cahill is a number three at best with his below league average K-rate and above league average BB-rate.
If Cahill’s K-rate continues to climb, maybe the D-Backs get the better end of that deal.
I just don’t think a mid-rotation, ground ball type pitcher who has never had a seasonal FIP below 4.10 at the Major League level is worth a Banuelos-upside type of pitcher.

Lol @ Russell Martin hate.
Sheesh. Girardi ran him out there everyday and it wore him. If he was given a day off here and there per week or so, I’m sure Martin would be productive. Why run a injury prone catcher out to his position everyday? It makes no sense. Signing Martin is to a long-term is a sensible deal since the jury is still out on Montero’s defense.
why sign an injury prone catcher to a long-term deal?
by long time listener on Dec 13, 2011 8:43 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Because he's actually a good catcher when you don't run him out there everyday.
I see no reason why Martin can’t be treated like Jeter and A-Rod and be given a days off.
Martin's 28
A-Rod & Jeter are 36/37

Montero is not ready to be an everyday catcher
And Cervelli is never going to be more than a back-up. Martin is a solid catcher and hopefully KLong can help him with his hitting. He’s relatively young, so I don’t 3-4 years is out of the question. Eventually he will be relegated to more of a back-up role with Montero as starter. He would be in a good position to mentor him the way Girardi did with Posada.

Here is my general rule for when I introduce friends to sushi: the first few times, or always if that’s your choice (it’s my rule forever), get nothing you wouldn’t eat cooked. Tuna and salmon are pretty non offensive sushi starter fish, I think. I am obsessed with Philly rolls. I could eat my weight in them alone.

Cashman is a troll, so it’s kind of hard to read him, but I think he’s smarter than to think our current rotation can win a world series as is.

I think they can, sort of. I answered this question to Marisa. It will certainly be extremely difficult, but once you get in the the playoffs it’s as much about clutch hitting and having an ace as it is having a great rotation.

Yes, certainly, but this year more than any other, it’s important to win the division. I don’t think we can do that without a lot of luck with the current rotation.

The way I look at it is I’ll be confident if the Yankees can get a solid #2-3 type. Then you have CC, him, and Nova, Hughes, Burnett, Garcia, and the kids filling out the other 3 spots.

Anything can happen, but I just would like to have the odds in our favor. I don’t expect Garcia to repeat what he did last year, Hughes and Burnett are kind of crapshoots, and you have to hope Nova maintains what he did. That’s a lot of hoping and wishing for my liking.

Then you have:
Yu Darvish
Colby Lewis
Derek Holland
Ogando/Harrison
Feldman/Hunter
And there’s Perez in the minors.

People are known to pick yankees for everything
they had the yankees getting CJ. I don’t think the yanks are going to win the posting or even bid sadly. The FO for w/e reason they aren’t interested. i would be pissed if we go into the reg season with the rotation we have now. Basically we’re hoping Nova, Garcia do as well as they did last year (unlikely) and AJ and Hughes not fall off a cliff (who knows) or Nosei coming up big (uncertainty). We got lucky last year with garcia, colon and nova…we can’t keep getting lucky.
Darvish as by far more talent than anyone else in the farm right now and more ready i would say. Eventually Cashman has to stop waiting for Cliff Lee to hit the market again and go sign a decent arm (not necessary Darvish, Kuroda would do). I mean in the past two year the Yanks trade wise skipped on Greinke, Haren, Garza, and oswalt. (Grienke and Haren i wanted) and FA wise they tried to bank it all on Lee which failed. It’s nice to have faith in the farm, but you do need a safety net…
I might agree that Darvish has more talent , but I don’t know how ready he is. There is the pitching on less rest thing. Also, if they really are still using a smaller ball that could be an issue. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for going after him. He has a certain appeal I think, hahaha. I just think he won’t be a plug and play. I think he’ll need plenty of time to adjust.

Well darvish is 25 so he would be a long term investment
The ball shouldn’t be too much of an issue due to the change this year. Also i’m more for the yanks signing a short term arm like Oswalt or Kuroda who can be a short term solution while the farm develops and what not. But the main appeal of darvish for me is basically, he’s can be both a long term and short term solution. The Yanks have the luxury of gambling. The post fee sucks but it doesn’t count towards the pay roll. plus i’m not sure what the Team is waiting for in terms of pitching since right now the norm is to lock up young arms for extended periods and it’s unlikely we’ll see another CC or Cliff Lee hit the market soon. (assuming Hamels and Cain both sign extensions) Grienke is the closest we get, but the Yanks are low on him too. (If i thought the yanks were going for Greinke next year then i’d be less inclined to go for darvish, but i don’t)
Orioles are scouting Japan heavily. Wouldn’t shock me if DD wants his first big move to be Prince, either.

Darvish
Say what you will about Burnett, he was critical to the 2009 World Championship. Thinking back, Matsui came in 2003; A-Rod came in 2004. Cano and Melky came from the farm system, etc. It took several years to piece together that one title. The Yanks may have to overpay for Darvish to win another World Series soon. At the opposite end of the pitching spectrum, how about Venditte as the #2 lefty? He would be effective against lefties who like hard stuff and he could also pitch against righties. He could be an effective long man to consume innings when the starter comes up short. At least he should get a real shot.
From everything I’ve read on him, no one has any real thought he’ll make it to the majors.
He was really fun to see in person though.
