Cubbie and Yankee trade?

Cubs want to rid themselves of Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Zambrano. Taking offers for Matt Garza.

Yankees fans want to see A.J. Burnett in another uniform. Bronx Bombers showing interest in Garza. Several attractive pieces in the minors. Such as David Phelps, Adam Warren and Chris Dickerson. With major league experienced Hector Noesi and Francisco Cervelli.

Could there be a trade here.

Basically AJ for Zambrano is a wash. Yankees would actually take on an addition 1.5 million. No one has or will predict that Carlos would become a Cy Young winner. So one year and done if he does not show the ability to be one of the best. Give both of these guys fresh starts. Maybe best of both worlds for both teams. If Carlos cannot act like a man, suspend him for rest of season and call it a career. Good news would be without pay. Yankees would then add 18 million to the budget for next years free agent class.

Garza for Warren, Phelps and Noesi. Yankees would add around 6 million to the payroll. Cubs would get three promising young pitcher. All three have much higher projections in the National League. This of course would unclog the minor league triple A rotation and let Killer B's progress.

Soriano for Cervilli and Chris Dickerson. Yankees would be stuck with an additional 63 million over next few years. But has been long rumored that Cubs would eat up to 50 million of the money owed to Alfonso. So key would be getting that salary down to a manageable 4 to 6 million a year over the rest of his contract. Then Yankees would have that fourth outfielder and lefty masher off the bench. Also would allow him to be trade bait if he does not work out. Cubs would get that needed back-up catcher that can handle a bat. This would relieve some of that catcher log jam the Yankees currently have. Then Dickerson would either become the regular left fielder or left handed fourth outfielder for the Cubs.

NEW YANKEES>>>Carlos Zambrano, Alfonso Soriano & Matt Garza

NEW CUBS>>> A.J. Burnett, Francisco Cervelli, Chris Dickerson, Adam Warren, David Phelps & Hector Noesi

What are your thought on this trade?

Soriano and Zambrano may be the two most overpaid players in baseball, not really sure why you think this is robbery for the Yankees.

Naw dude!

The Yankees could totally afford a 250 million dollar payroll and do this deal!

by Briceratops on Dec 2, 2011 11:08 PM EST up reply actions

They probably could actually

Doesn’t make it smart though (yes, I know you were sarcastic).

because
Garza for Warren, Phelps and Noesi.

is ridiculous. The other ridiculous trade suggestions are equally ridiculous.

by waw on Dec 3, 2011 12:15 AM EST up reply actions

Here is how I read this post
Basically AJ for Zambrano…

Garza for Warren, Phelps and Noesi.

Soriano for Cervilli and Chris Dickerson.

Three separate transactions. The first being nothing more than dumping a year of bad pitcher contract. The second being an incredible win for the Yankees. And the third being a bad deal for the Yankees, but not bad enough to offset the second deal.

So would you pay $50 to eat two bowls of horse turd and a Klondike?

I know this is a wacky analogy, but you don’t get one good player (or anything) and two bad, too expensive players if you don’t have to.

by bloppy_ploppy on Dec 3, 2011 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

To use your analogy, if I really really wanted the Klondike

then I’d take that, and dump the bowls of horse turd on my wife’s garden for fertilizer.

Always assuming that, as in this post, the transactions were listed separately (i.e., that Klondike better not be in the bowl of horse turds).

Its going to take atleast Banuelos or Betances for Garza. No question

He was great in the 2001 World Series though

And I don’t think he’s a head case or anything. He’s not even a bad baseball player, he’s just not a particularly good one being paid like a great one.

by d_c_guy on Dec 2, 2011 9:54 AM EST up reply actions

He strikes out a ton, he can’t get on base, he’s 35, he can’t stay healthy, he can’t field a position and his power is diminishing..other than that he’s great.

by KingHenrik on Dec 2, 2011 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn’t say “great” in the 01 Series. Just clutch. He only had 6 hits, it just so happened that one of them walked off Game 5 and another was 3 outs from being the Series-winning homer.

CUB YANKEE TRADE

I think the Yankees would be complete idiots for making a trade that would only give them one good player out of the deal (Garza) and 2 has beens in Carlos Zambrano and Alfonso Soriano.

To give up Warren, Phelps, or Noesi would be a very foolish mistake.

by JBBY on Dec 2, 2011 2:16 AM EST reply actions

i would happily do the zambrano for aj burnett straight up, but none of the others.

IF the cubs ate all of sorianos contract, i might take him off their hands for a hug, but not much more.

by Scooby Snacks on Dec 2, 2011 10:33 AM EST reply actions

I don't want AJ, but at the same time I don't want Zambrano.

I would do the trade for Matt Garza for the three prospects you listed above. In the case of AJ, as well as Rafael Soriano, buy them out. They are both problem children. In the end, we have a lot of money saved to buy better players.

by danmarley21 on Dec 2, 2011 11:47 AM EST reply actions

How many Yankee pitching prospects have really panned out over the years?

Pettitte might be the last prospect that showed any consistency during his career. Nova last year, but does he end up like Hughes this year? Chamberlain has been injured and inconsistent. The book is not out on Noesi. Ian Kennedy over the last season, another 1-2 year wonder? Brian Taylor. Matt Drews. When you think about it, there are very few Yankee pitching prospects succeeding in the majors, either for them or another team.

If I can trade a B-boy or both of them and get Garza, I’d definitely do it.

by OldYankee Fan on Dec 2, 2011 12:06 PM EST reply actions

Taylor wasn't really the Organization's fault

I fault them for signing Brackman when he needed tommy john surgery, it one thing to sign an injured player, its another thing to give him a major league deal even though he had very little leverage at the time. On a minor league contract he’d still be in the system.

There is also David Robertson, Randy Choate, Tyler Clippard, Jake Westbrook, maybe Mark Melancon that have shown any staying power. We had been drafting weakly for years, however a lot of the recent success has been international signings (Noesi, Banuelos, Aceves)

Only thing missing is the dumpster fire photo

If the Yankees did these deals with the Cubs, they deserve to finish in third. I doubt even 1980’s Steinbrenner would even make deals this crappy.

Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.

80's deals...sigh

Doug Drabek for Rick Rhoden…
Fred McGriff and Mike Morgan for Tom Dodd and Dale Murray.
Jay Buhner for Ken Phelps
Willie McGee for Bob Sykes
Bob Tewksbury for Steve Trout

Oh the humanity

Another awesome post.

Why didn’t you suggest we make a three way trade with the Cubs and Mets in which we send Dickerson and get Garza and David Wright?

Boone Logan is a good boy. So is David Robertson. Team A.J.

I’m usually nice to people who suggest ridiculous trades, but you are out of your f’ing mind… Why the hell would you want a headcase who destroys team chemistry and a way overpayed player who can’t perform at all anymore?
