Yankees/MLB Hot Stove News

Hello, folks!

A day after the Philadelphia Phillies signed Jim Thome, the team is expressing interest in Michael Cuddyer. Cuddyer would fit in well with the Phillies line-up, but there is no position to put him (If Dominic Brown is with the team).

MLBTradeRumors and Ben Reiter both ranked the top fifty free agents in baseball.

The New York Yankees will talk to C.J. Wilson at some point this off-season. I personally will be doing everything I can to stop the two sides from talking, though I do feel this is just to drive up the price.

Mike Maddux and Sandy Alomar Jr. will interview for the Red Sox managerial vacancy. I, for one, think Bobby Valentine is the perfect fit. Him, or Tim McCarver.

Jonathan Sanchez is available in a trade, as is Jair Jurrjens. The Royals recently declined the Braves' offer of Jurrjens and Martin Prado for Wil Meyers and Lorenzo Cain. As for Sanchez, he is a free agent after the 2012 season. Would you be interested in Sanchez as a Yankees trade candidate?

Do not forget to make your free agent predictions!

he is a pretty good pitcher in the NL. but it’s not like we’d give up one of our top prospects for him. i wouldnt be opposed to nunez and a 2nd tier prospect. but definitely worried about how he would transition into the AL East that’s for sure

by cermolaNY2 on Nov 5, 2011 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

No.

He doesn’t strike anybody out, has a mediocre groundball rate, and he is losing velocity.

by Briceratops on Nov 5, 2011 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

i understand your concerns but u’d have to trade nunez for the guy. i mean regardless of velocity concerns he had an era in 2’s last year. i would gladly throw him in the back end of the rotation. can never have enough pitching

by cermolaNY2 on Nov 5, 2011 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

And again, the price for Jurrjens is too high for what you could reasonable expect from him.

When you don’t strike anybody out or get groundballs and you pitch 60% of your games in YS3, Fenway, Rogers Center, and Camden Yards; you either get lucky like Freddy Garcia or suck dick like Phil Hughes.

by Briceratops on Nov 5, 2011 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

haha i mentioned a mid level prospect and nunez. do i think the braves would do that? no. im just mentioning the deal it’d have to be for us to get him. any more than that we obviously arent going to do it so if it’s going to be written about as an option on this site then lets talk about really our only option of getting him. what would the braves do? banuelos? awesome. we wont. so maybe jurrjens just shouldnt be a topic of discussion on here. also, there are certainly ways to be a consistent and quality mlb pitcher without a high k/9 and a high gdball rate, even in the AL east. i dont know moose’s gd ball rates but his k/9 certainly wasn’t anything to write home about.

Mussina struck out a good amount of hitters

Especially in his prime. He wasn’t known for his strikeout ability but he struck out a lot more hitters than Jair does. He also didn’t walk anyone.

Mussina also didn't pitch in YS3

At the spots where they paint the number on the wall they're the same

However, the new walls are 2 feet lower, which means more balls go out, and also they’re on a straight line rather than an arch in left center and right center so in between the numbers they’re a few feet shallower.

probably mussinas best year with us, his k/9 is pretty similar to jair. for the third time. i DONT THINK WE WILL GET HIM AND DONT THINK THE BRAVES WOULD DO NUNEZ, i just think he’s better than others believe he is

by cermolaNY2 on Nov 5, 2011 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

He had an All-Star year

And to the Braves, he’s an All-Star pitcher.

I think what ’Tops meant was All-Star™

by jetanumba2 on Nov 5, 2011 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

the concept that if he pitched the same as he did last year(sub 3 era) in the al east that he couldnt survive is ridiculous. if he pitched to the same level as last season in the AL east, i think his era would increase by about half a run, making him one of our best pitchers.

by cermolaNY2 on Nov 5, 2011 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

AL East from the NL East would be more than 1/2 an ER

There’s ONE team in the NL East that hits like the AL East and that’s the Phillies. Having to face the loaded lineups in Boston, Tampa, Toronto and Baltimore would balloon his ERA over a run easily, if not more. Look at Javier Vasquez, ERA over 5 in AL East in 2010 and almost a run and a half lower in the NL East this year. Not the same pitchers, true, but it illustrates the point that the AL East is a gauntlet a lot of NL pitchers can’t handle.

jurrjens

is the only one of them that if the price is right(via trade obviously) that i wouldnt mind. but it would have to be a pretty low price(something im sure ATL wouldnt do). sanchez had a mid 4 i believe in the nl west so for obvious reasons i dont want any part of him unless it was for free

is like burnett. can look filthy at times, but walks too many and is too inconsistent
no thank you

Sanchez – he of the career ERA+ of 97, with a 4.8 BB/9 rate, and who has never pitched 200 innings in his MLB career?

Ummm, no.

Brandon,

You just want Valentine or McCarver to manage the Red Sox so you won’t have to listen to them during Fox or ESPN broadcasts, right? At least, that would be my reasoning.

I’d be open to signing any free agents that don’t cost draft picks, though I’m not sure if supplemental picks come from the team that signs a Type B (like Buehrle) or just an extra pick from the MLB.

No to Jonathan Sanchez. Walks too many batters.

It's actually a brand new Sheetz in my hometown.

They have an above average beer selection for a gas station. I was surprised to find it at all here.

Do you recommend it cold or at the suggested 45 degrees.

lol

I recommend buying two of them, and trying both! But seriously, if you’ve never had a “warmer” temperature beer it might turn you off, but serving it too cold kind of kills the flavor. I’d say give it a shot at 45, and see what you think. Enjoy!

I don't feel like we'll get value for the price he will cost the team

Both in terms of $$$ and draft picks. I really hate giving Texas draft picks. And I’m just not sold on C.J. Wilson. I could be wrong, I’ll admit.

by waw on Nov 5, 2011 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s on the wrong side of 30, he’ll cost AJ money or likely more, also a draft pick. And there’s a much younger, far more racially diverse option available that does not cost a draft pick. Only money, and the contract itself would probably be cheaper than whatever Wilson will get.

The age is what bothers me most. His current age plus the long term deal he will require will likely give the Yankees yet another player who will be old and overpaid in a few years. Sometimes it’s necessary to make a move like that (as it was with AJ in 2009). But in this case where there is a better option and not as big a rotation need, I’d like to stay away from him.

This, he walks too many batters, he’s said he doesn’t like pitching on the east coast, and I’d rather not sign another Burnett.
