This Day In 2009: World Series Champions
This night two years ago the New York Yankees were crowned champions of baseball, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game Six of the 2009 World Series.
Hideki Matsui was the hero, and Andy Pettitte was the winner. Pedro Martinez was defeated once again by the Yankees, marking the last time he faced the Yankees.
I sadly was not a member of this site when the Yankees won the World Series, but I did look back at the posts of that night. From the Pinstripe Alley Championship Thread:
The Yankees have shown perseverance. They have show their talent and determination. They are the champions we have wished and prayed and hoped for.
Hopefully the 2012 New York Yankees can be built with talent in mind, and the intangibles as secondary qualifications.
Hopefully the 2012 Yankees can make me write a post similar to this years later about the night they won the World Series.
What a November night that was.

I think everyone remembers it. It is obscene that baseball was being played on November 4th.
Beating Pedro never got old.

Well said. 2009 just had that magical feel to it with all the walk-off hits in the regular season and all the big time, “clutch” situation hits throughout the playoffs.
I happened to be driving back from a girlfriend’s (at the time) state playoff soccer game and I heard Sterling’s call for Hideki Matsui’s two-run shot. Nearly drove my car off the road I cheered so much. Matsui and Pettitte equally impressive that night.
I’ll certainly never forget November 4, 2009.

Great season, great team
Also, I’m happy it happened on November 4th, because now that date is known for something besides what happened to us on that date 8 years prior.

I was in the Bronx for that win
We partied on the streets for about an hour after the game…what a fun atmosphere. I ended up staying awake until about 10:00 a.m. the next day. Couldn’t sleep.
Awesome! It must have been pandemonium.

Haha yea pretty much
Wasn’t out of control though. No rioting or any of that crap. Just hundreds of people having a good time. I was pretty sauced up by the end of it, I remember high-fiving cops on my way to the subway.
For me personally
It capped off what was probably the greatest sports year of my life, due to my internship and all the things I had done.

I'm addicted to the October/November 2009 video archives. The playoff ride was nothing short of incredible.
Was awesome that I had a week off from during the World Series, so I was able to enjoy it even more.
I went to the Nets-Nuggets game the night of Game 6, and the small TV’s near the bottom of the seating bowl that usually had the Nets game on were instead playing Game 6 for the fans. I had to squint, but I was able to keep track of what was going on. The first timeout after Matsui homered, they played it on the jumbotron, and PA announcer Gary Sussman said, “Who’s my daddy now?” Listened to Matsui’s two-run double on the way home, and I came home in time to see the final two innings.
