Yankees/MLB Hot Stove Report: Molina, Garza & Playoff Shares
Jose Molina signed a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Rays for $1.8M. There is a club option for the same amount in 2013 or a $300K buyout.
Update: The Red Sox are expected to choose their new manager from between Gene Lamont and Bobby Valentine tomorrow.
- What would you think of going after Matt Garza?
- The Yankees have until Dec. 12 to offer arbitration to Russell Martin, which they are expected to do.
- The Cardinals received their World Series shares today. Each player received more than $300K. This year, after losing in the LDS, the Yanks received about $26K each.
- Three Yankees semi-prospects were made available for the Rule 5 draft: L/RHP Pat Venditte, OF Eduardo Sosa and OF Abe Almonte.
- Draft slotting may threaten to turn two-sport athletes away from baseball. Boston's Brandon Jacobs (not the running back) is one of those guys. He chose pro baseball simply for the superior financial possibilities.
- Speaking of Boston, enjoy a video chronicling their September collapse. Oh, and an article about a little known scandal in their past that rivals Penn State's. How is this the first I've heard about it?
- The Nationals are reportedly going after Prince Fielder, and if that falls through, Cuban outfielder Yoennis Cespedes. They also have interest in C.J. Wilson, Roy Oswalt and Mark Buehrle.
- Brian Cashman will (again) descend down the side of Stamford's Landmark Building as an elf. Watch for it this Sunday.
- Concerning the starting pitching market, and why it has seemingly stalled.

I would like to see Garza as a NYY...
Questions: Who decides the amount of the shares for the World Series winners? And why the huuuuge disparity between the ’09 shares and the ’11 shares???
Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."
Isn't it obvious?
The Big Bad Yankees don’t need the money as much as the small market Cardinals.

(smacks forehead) Of course!

09 yankees set record with their WS playoff share
shares are based on box office revenue among other things i think which gave 2009 title winners a record world series share something over 300K
Travis said in the post above that the 2009 share was only 26k.

The 2009 WS winners share
was $365,052.73 (Baseball Almanac). The Yankees’ 2011 LDS losers’ share was $26,238.86 (CBS News).

If a two sport athlete
who is a football player and also plays baseball is highly drafted and elects to play football, that dude is a fool.
Romine!
I'm not so sure
If he can get drafted in the first round and sign an NFL contract, he’s guaranteed money. In baseball, he cannot sign a MLB deal, it will be years before he can sign a big money contract, if ever, and in that time plenty of things could happen.
Would be happy with Garza
Depending on the asking price. Any chance of Theo Epstein sending Garza and Sean Marshall to the Yankees on the cheap to stick it to the Red Sox?

I'd be surprised if Epstein did the Yankees any favors...

Garza and Shawn Marshall for Pena and Romine
Make it happen Cashman!

Don't forget Zambrano!

Even as a joke I don't think it's funny
Zambrano is just too unlikable. He’d fit right in at Boston or Philly. Preferably Boston, since they need someone to refill their position of lead douche now that Papelbon is gone.

lol
Certainly a joke—on my part. My fear is that someone in power might seriously look at him…

Not enough heart on the '27 Yanks...

Garza probably won't happen
Cubbies have Soto, so they wouldn’t need Montero and Starlin so they wouldn’t need Wardo… I read an article about a supposed trade proposal for Matt Cain involving Swish, Jesus, and a couple of the top prospect arms. Apparently it was outright denied by the Giants. I think these trade proposals are only going to get more and more messy, so if I were Cash I’d keep the prospects. The idea of getting Cj Wilson is sounding better and better to me each day (maybe because my last name is Wilson and I’d like to get a fake Wilson Yankees jersey…)

Cashman seems determine to hold onto Nunez at all costs
And yet, he seems equally determined to unload Montero at the earliest opportunity. Has Nunez really showed us that much? And has Montero really shown the Yankees that little?
Nunez wouldn’t bring us much and we don’t have another backup IF as versatile and cheap as he is. Montero could bring us a nice haul and we have Martin, Romine, and Sanchez down on the farm.
Romine!
If Nunez is so useless, why not trade him and just go after another SS via trade/FA?
Why refuse any trades that include him? It’s starting to remind me of the failure to trade Joba for Dan Haren because of his perceived value.
Sigh
Don’t remind me.

Nunez has obvious skills and could develop into a useful player. But, he made his fair share of rookie mistakes, so ship him out of town at the first chance if no one has the spare time to go out behind the stadium and shoot him.

Not what I'm saying at all
I just don’t see why Cashman would refuse to consider using Nunez in a deal, while at the same time he seems to be very eager to deal Montero. If he could get a good pitcher for a deal centered around Nunez, why not consider it?
For what it’s worth, I’ve not advocated ditching Nunez. I like him much better than Pena, and he’s currently our best option for backup infielder. I just wonder if Cashman has a much higher opinion of him, and why.
why not trade him and just go after another SS via trade/FA?
Here’s why:
1.Aaron Hill, two years and $11M
2.Clint Barmes, two years and $10.5M
3.Mark Ellis, two years and $8.75M
4.Jamey Carroll, two years and $6.75M
5.Willie Bloomquist, two years and $3.8M
6.John McDonald, two years and $3M
Those six players have signed those contracts this offseason. They average 34.5 years of age, hit a combined .255/.307/.351 in 2011, and will earn an average of $3.65M next season. Nunez turned 24 in June, hit .265/.313/.385 in 2011, and will earn roughly $500k next season (as well as the year after).

Pat Venditte
- he’d be fun to watch just out of curiosity. I suspect that he would do poorly against right-handed major league hitters tho
sick
man that story about fitzpatrick and the red sox is sick…. i cant believe there are really this many sick people out there…. people have some serious… serious problems… its a real wake up call when you read things like this and realize the kind of things that go on in this world.
there's many more sick bastards out there then just the ones at PSU, Cuse and the Pissants clubhouse
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
garza
i’d give garza a shot as long as the price was right…. the fact that he has experience in the al east is a real good asset

up slightly from last year but still below the record set in 2009…$350,030 on the 2009 New York Yankees.

yeah, something about that doesn't make sense
There’s no way the Yankees’ share was only $26,000 in 2009.

Seriously, though
the $26K was this year’s Yankees share, as the ALDS losers. Maybe that’s where the number came from.
