National League Game 5 Open Thread
I'm not really a Yankee fan. I'm a baseball fan who loves the Yankees.
2011 is not over. Albert Pujols is still a Cardinal; Ian Kennedy is a Diamondback; Roy Halladay is a Philly; Ryan Braun is a Brewer.
Use this thread to talk about how much you love baseball, even when the Yankees aren't playing. Enjoy tonight's games, because winter is coming.

I love baseball so much
that I wasn’t really that sad that the Yankees lost.
Now I can root for other teams without any guilt.
I’m torn between the Rangers and the Brewers, but I think it would be cool to see IPK win a World Series. I don’t have any enmity toward any team, per se, but it would be poetic justice for the Phillies not to make it to the NLCS (while the Red Sox missed the post-season altogether).
That being said, there’s a lot of good pitching, good hitters, and good stories left in the playoffs.
Sidebar: As a kid growing up in Brooklyn through the 80s (aka the Yankee Championship drought years), when the Yankees weren’t in the playoffs, I was still watching all the playoffs with my family. I watched the playoffs in 1986 as the Mets beat the Red Sox, as well as the Giants versus A’s with an earthquake to mix things up. So, like jscape, I’m a baseball fan that loves the Yankees.

I'd say Philthy losing to St. Louis is a bigger deal than the Yanks losing to the Tigers
Everyone and their brother had Philthy blowing everyone away to the title. With that rotation, they should have.
Goes to show that assembling one "perfect" aspect of a team will only take you so far.
They spent so much time raving about the pitching that they forgot the offense couldn’t hit beach balls. Oh, the joy of it all…
It's like the reincarnation of the 1990s Atlanta Braves
Those Braves teams had easily the best pitching staff in the NL, and maybe all of baseball, for basically a decade… and have exactly ONE World Series trophy to show for it.
The suits at Fox

Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!
they could move either of them to first base
i hope this doesnt happen though. We have too much pitching talent to trade for another pitcher with someone like Montero. Either trade the pitching prospects or find someone that will be cheap
Brandon Belt plays 1st.

Christmas in October!!!
Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."
They have Brandon Belt.
One of the top first basemen prospects in baseball. They just need to play him instead of Aubrey Huff.
No I agree
I’d only consider this if the Yankees were desperate for starting pitching, and with the depth the Yankees have in the minor leagues and with a possible signing of Yu Darvish (I really hope), I don’t think it’s necessary. So I’d hang onto Montero.
But it definitely isn’t the worst deal in the world if it really is a straight up trade. Cain is good. There could be worse scenarios involving Jesus.
Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!
There could be worse scenarios involving Jesus.
One of them involves a crucifix.
The Savior has come, and he is glorious. #63
Well played, sir.
Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."
Cain wouldn’t be the best fit for Yankee Stadium, he’s a right handed fly ball pitcher… Don’t see why the Giants would even want Montero, hey have Posey at C, and Belt is a nice 1B prospect.
The Savior has come, and he is glorious. #63
Move him to third base!
Though seriously, some Yankee fans actually believe this. A bunch called Francesa today and suggested moving Jesus to third and putting A-Rod as a part time DH. I was unfortunately thoroughly unsurprised by this.
Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!
This is why I don’t watch Francesa. Not only does he attract some dumb callers, but even he is dumb and so arrogant he doesn’t even realize he’s dumb.
And that idea is crazy, ARod played great defense all year, even in the playoffs, why would we DH him and put Montero, who’s never played 3B, there?
The Savior has come, and he is glorious. #63
Meh
I watch him enough to realize that he knows what he’s talking about generally. I don’t think he’s an idiot, though he is a bit old school with his opinions and he definitely can be an arrogant douche at times. He does great interviews though.
As to the answer to your question, Yankee fans think A-Rod sucks because he struck out with the bases loaded. They take him for granted when he does well and want him thrown off a bridge when he doesn’t. That really is the best answer I can give to you.
Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!

later...
“oh, I knew him as Alberto Jose Albuquerque, I didn’t know they call him Al. I’d never seen him pitch before.”
Oh really, Francesa? You knew of an Alberto Jose Albuquerque, but couldn’t figure out that maybe people call him Al? And you’d never seen him pitch before? Guess you didn’t watch Game 1 of the ALDS then.
The Savior has come, and he is glorious. #63
Would rather have Cain than Lincecum
Just waiting for that dudes arm to reach home plate before the ball one day. But trading a potential 30 HR .300 hitting catcher for a 3rd starter is foolish.

I can see Cain getting lit up in the AL East
facing the lineups in Boston, Tampa, Toronto and Baltimore is ALOT different than facing the weak lineups in the NL West. Especially giving up fly balls to lefties at Yankee Stadium.

Brewers in 6 over the Cards
Tigers in 7 over the Rangers (Verlander>Rangers staff)
Brew Crew win the Series since they are so good at home and have home field during the World Series this year.
Rangers are gunna wipe the floor with the Tigers, watch. They are the more complete team.
The Savior has come, and he is glorious. #63
Thats what I thought the Yankees would do
Yanks were better than both, and yet they’re going home. Never know what will happen in the playoffs.
But I truly hate Detroit right now because of what just happened and I can’t stand Valverde, so I want to see Verlander get tatooed any time he pitches and in all the other games for Valverde to blow a save.

Agreed.
Go Brew Crew.
You think we do something like this?
Situation 1 :
Move Montero to catcher
Don’t resign Martin
Sign Prince Fielder as a DH
Situation 2 :
Trade Swisher
Convert Montero to RF
Resign Martin
Sign Prince
Or 3 :
Shut up greedy Yankee fan.

Imagine Posada playing right
Now imagine Posada trying to play right while having Dustin Pedroia on his shoulders and Mark Teixeira on his back, and you will have successfully invisioned what it would be like to watch Montero try to play right field in terms of range.

none of them, because i’m not mean and won’t pick #3 either, lol. Can’t sign Fielder for DH because Montero can’t catch every game, and we want his bat in the lineup as often as possible when he’s not catching, and we’ll need the DH for Arod and Jeter.
The Savior has come, and he is glorious. #63
If Montero plays next year it'll be primarily as a DH
He may catch here and there, but Russell Martin is going to be back, and he isn’t losing his starting catching job either.

So anyone up to trade for a pitcher adding in a catching prospect like Romine?
Residing on the BEast coast.
Well last year
I thought a package of Romine plus B prospects would be enough for Greinke…seeing as what Milwaukee gave up from their crappy farm makes me think, it would have been possible
The Yankees were offerred Greinke for Montero and Nunez last year
Cash didn’t do it because he didn’t think Greinke had the toughness to handle NY. But I don’t think they would have traded him to the Yankees if Jesus wasn’t involved.
Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!
Here’s the link to the Greinke to Yanks rumor last year, so I think names were at least exchanged but they never got anywhere close to a deal.
Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!
Interesting
i doubt the final price would have been that high we negotiated. One of the B’s + nunez plus romine instead of Montero might have done it.
Teh crazies man.
But seriously who’s on the block?
Maybe C.J. Wilson or Darvish. But we need someone.
Residing on the BEast coast.
Darvish
Probably costs less (not including the posting fee) and doesn’t cost a draft pick. And he’s probably better.

Would you trade Montero for any of these guys?
Jesus Montero may once again be trade bait this winter, writes John Harper of the New York Daily News. A group of scouts tells Harper that such pitchers as James Shields, Gio Gonzalez, Trevor Cahill, Mat Latos or Matt Cain could potentially be obtained in a deal featuring Montero. Harper also says “the early indications are the Yanks won’t go to extremes to sign” C.J. Wilson as a free agent.

Nightengale’s scout sources, for the record, unanimously predict “stardom” for Darvish if he jumps to the majors.
Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos is in Japan and saw Darvish pitch, according to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun.
The Nationals maintain interest.
The Yankees have scouted him heavily.
Rangers GM Jon Daniels watched Darvish in June.
The Orioles had interest last offseason.
The Red Sox have been linked to Darvish.
The Rays watched Darvish about a year ago.

So bidding teams don’t know what other teams are bidding. Hence, Boston’s $51 million posting fee for Dice-K, which was $11 million more than the next highest bid.

Love it that the Phillies lost, though. Yay for humanity.
The idiot formerly known as pkyankeefan! Now in Technicolour!
In a small way it' nice to see that there's a team that was favored that choked the big one
in far more disappointing way than us. Talk about feeling bad. We got to 97 wins with a patchwork staff and injuries to key starters. The Phillies spent over 20 million on one player to become fail-proof, proving once again that no such thing exists. I’ve heard many baseball men say over the years that success in the regular season, over a grind of 162 games, is the real barometer of how good a team is. I hope Yankee management looks at this Philly loss to come to the realization that the regular-season successes matter irrespective of the post-season outcome. Players are humans, not robots.
