National League Game 5 Open Thread

I'm not really a Yankee fan. I'm a baseball fan who loves the Yankees.

2011 is not over. Albert Pujols is still a Cardinal; Ian Kennedy is a Diamondback; Roy Halladay is a Philly; Ryan Braun is a Brewer.

Use this thread to talk about how much you love baseball, even when the Yankees aren't playing. Enjoy tonight's games, because winter is coming.

I love baseball so much

that I wasn’t really that sad that the Yankees lost.

Now I can root for other teams without any guilt.

I’m torn between the Rangers and the Brewers, but I think it would be cool to see IPK win a World Series. I don’t have any enmity toward any team, per se, but it would be poetic justice for the Phillies not to make it to the NLCS (while the Red Sox missed the post-season altogether).

That being said, there’s a lot of good pitching, good hitters, and good stories left in the playoffs.

Sidebar: As a kid growing up in Brooklyn through the 80s (aka the Yankee Championship drought years), when the Yankees weren’t in the playoffs, I was still watching all the playoffs with my family. I watched the playoffs in 1986 as the Mets beat the Red Sox, as well as the Giants versus A’s with an earthquake to mix things up. So, like jscape, I’m a baseball fan that loves the Yankees.

by Briceratops on Oct 7, 2011 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

No I agree

I’d only consider this if the Yankees were desperate for starting pitching, and with the depth the Yankees have in the minor leagues and with a possible signing of Yu Darvish (I really hope), I don’t think it’s necessary. So I’d hang onto Montero.

But it definitely isn’t the worst deal in the world if it really is a straight up trade. Cain is good. There could be worse scenarios involving Jesus.

Move him to third base!

Though seriously, some Yankee fans actually believe this. A bunch called Francesa today and suggested moving Jesus to third and putting A-Rod as a part time DH. I was unfortunately thoroughly unsurprised by this.

Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!

by nyyrocks29 on Oct 7, 2011 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions

This is why I don’t watch Francesa. Not only does he attract some dumb callers, but even he is dumb and so arrogant he doesn’t even realize he’s dumb.

And that idea is crazy, ARod played great defense all year, even in the playoffs, why would we DH him and put Montero, who’s never played 3B, there?

The Savior has come, and he is glorious. #63

by Wraithpk on Oct 7, 2011 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Meh

I watch him enough to realize that he knows what he’s talking about generally. I don’t think he’s an idiot, though he is a bit old school with his opinions and he definitely can be an arrogant douche at times. He does great interviews though.

As to the answer to your question, Yankee fans think A-Rod sucks because he struck out with the bases loaded. They take him for granted when he does well and want him thrown off a bridge when he doesn’t. That really is the best answer I can give to you.

I can see Cain getting lit up in the AL East

facing the lineups in Boston, Tampa, Toronto and Baltimore is ALOT different than facing the weak lineups in the NL West. Especially giving up fly balls to lefties at Yankee Stadium.

Thats what I thought the Yankees would do

Yanks were better than both, and yet they’re going home. Never know what will happen in the playoffs.

But I truly hate Detroit right now because of what just happened and I can’t stand Valverde, so I want to see Verlander get tatooed any time he pitches and in all the other games for Valverde to blow a save.

none of them, because i’m not mean and won’t pick #3 either, lol. Can’t sign Fielder for DH because Montero can’t catch every game, and we want his bat in the lineup as often as possible when he’s not catching, and we’ll need the DH for Arod and Jeter.

Would you trade Montero for any of these guys?
Jesus Montero may once again be trade bait this winter, writes John Harper of the New York Daily News. A group of scouts tells Harper that such pitchers as James Shields, Gio Gonzalez, Trevor Cahill, Mat Latos or Matt Cain could potentially be obtained in a deal featuring Montero. Harper also says “the early indications are the Yanks won’t go to extremes to sign” C.J. Wilson as a free agent.

Nightengale’s scout sources, for the record, unanimously predict “stardom” for Darvish if he jumps to the majors.
Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos is in Japan and saw Darvish pitch, according to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun.

The Yankees have scouted him heavily.
Rangers GM Jon Daniels watched Darvish in June.

In a small way it' nice to see that there's a team that was favored that choked the big one

in far more disappointing way than us. Talk about feeling bad. We got to 97 wins with a patchwork staff and injuries to key starters. The Phillies spent over 20 million on one player to become fail-proof, proving once again that no such thing exists. I’ve heard many baseball men say over the years that success in the regular season, over a grind of 162 games, is the real barometer of how good a team is. I hope Yankee management looks at this Philly loss to come to the realization that the regular-season successes matter irrespective of the post-season outcome. Players are humans, not robots.
