Judge on 162 Games, Not 5 Feet

The Yankees were five feet from the ALCS.  If Jeter's drive had gone five feet farther, they would have won game five and we'd be worried about Freddy Garcia against CJ Wilson.

Therefore, while last night felt like crap (and still does), I wouldn't go drawing too many conclusions from it. The Tigers had a great series but are not a better team than the Yankees.  As we slowly turn our thoughts toward next year, we should focus on the 162 games that came before this series, not the five feet that we didn't get.

While the Yankees won 97 games and were one of the top three teams in the league (only the Phillies and Rangers were arguably better), Yankee fans like me want to be one of the top one teams in the league.  The starting pitching will need work as Colon and Garcia are unlikely to repeat.  This makes re-signing CC paramount and perhaps finding another starter (CC, Nova, AJ, Hughes and . . .). A-Rod and Jeter's declines with age will continue and could accelerate at any time now.  Finding someone who could play the left side of the infield and allow them to DH frequently will be critical (I like Nunez but am not yet convinced he's the long term answer). Getting Monero 400 at bats is critical.

Most teams would kill to have these concerns.  The rest of the lineup and the bullpen are in good shape.  A few changes and we can feel confident about more excruciating games next October.
