ALDS Game 3: Sabathia vs. Verlander (Take 2)
New York Yankees at Detroit Tigers, Oct 3, 2011 8:37 PM EDT
What was supposed to be a premier pitching matchup was nothing but anticlimactic on Friday night as the game was rained out in the second inning. Each hurler will get a fresh start in the spacious confines of Comerica Park.
Vs.
C'mon guys, make Verlander work.

my preference
CC dominates, Verlander can’t deal with pitching on short rest, Yanks win big and CC goes the distance. Then they can empty the bullpen tomorrow to back up AJ and win the series.

This
Well, I’d rather have back to back dominant games from our starters so they don’t even have to come back home and then these four guys can prepare for the ALCS. And Valverde can go back home and examine his crystal ball and find out what went wrong.

Looks like a decent crystal ball to me
Better than Rollins’, at least
CC can ill afford to make mistakes tonight
One run could be the difference. Then again maybe Verlander has an epic meltdown and the Yankees blow the Tigers out.

is it just me or is every fly ball to Ajax that he can't catch end the same way?
over the shoulder, bounces, hits the wall and he can’t pick it up off the ground
I noticed
Wouldn’t put too much stock into it- he’s one of the better defenders in the league if not one of the best. He knows what he’s doing on defense. And that ball would have been a triple anyways.

Pitch count doesn't worry me with CC on the mound
It’s a playoff game and he’s a horse, and he doesn’t have to go on short rest next time he pitches (if there is a next time). He can go 130 or maybe pass 140 if absolutely necessary. I’m worried more about Detroit getting free baserunners because anything not down the middle is a ball.
Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!

Technically, once you break your hands toward the hitting zone, you’re “intending” to swing. So an umpire can never go wrong with calling a swing

Exactly
The less you have to have rules that force any official trying to judge things like intent, the better
Basically it seems like silly word-choice, but that’s just me
I agree. Then again, I don’t think bringing your hands down and stopping them is intent to swing. I think you’re clearly trying not to swing in that scenario.

does anyone else feel this way?
I feel like the whole ‘best record gets the last game’ thing is kind of a disadvantage. How often does a series go 5? I’m much rather be going into games 3-4 into my park. Especially if i’m down 0-2
Nah. Open the series with 2 games at home.
And they can’t give you 3 in a row.
I know where I come from, and when you always have in mind where you come from the rest will be easy. I think the rest will be easy.
-- M. Rivera
no my point is that i wouldn't want to be away for a clinching game
so i don’t find the advantage in getting the last game that may never come
I agree
I think there should be a bigger home field advantage, but I’m baffled as to how.

I think I've seen somewhere
that the decisive game (5 or 7, depending on the series) is the only one where homefield really makes an appreciable difference
Of course, if you’re down 0-2 after playing 2 home games, you may have bigger problems…
I feel the same way.
I get that being able to start at home is nice, but then the other team gets 3 at home in a row.

The idea is that a deciding Game is played at your home ballpark
And that overall you get more home games in a series. The placement of some of the home games may make it less of a disadvantage for the away team, but it can still be important. We saw that in 2003.
I do think that in a 7 game series there shouldn’t be three straight on the road though. I’d rather have 2-2-1-1-1
Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!

let the team with the better record choose if they want to start home or away
let the team decide what is an advantage. I’d pick starting away so we won’t have to go into clinching games away. Though i don’t know how you’d take the fifth game into account
You could go 1-1-1-1-1, but that's absurd.
