World Series Game 6: Garcia vs. Lewis

The Rangers are one win away from their first World Series title in franchise history, so the excitement level must be incredible in Texas. They'll send Colby Lewis to the mound in hopes of clinching tonight.

Lewis, by the way, has turned up his game in the postseason. Despite a career 4.99 ERA in the regular season, his numbers in October are phenomonal: 4-1, 2.22 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 8.1 K/9 in 44 innings.

Jaime Garcia will take the mound to try to force a game seven for the Cardinals. In his first start against the Rangers this series, Garcia registered a no decision, but threw an absolute gem: 7 IP, 7 K's, 0 runs, 3 hits, 1 walk.

Who do you have tonight?

The Rangers are home.

First one of the year in fact.

I think the Rangers close it out tonight.

I’m rooting for the Cards just to get a game seven, though.

The one for Pulp Fiction was a blast. They gave everyone capguns to shoot at appropriate times in the movie.

Half-season deal is probably the better investment. It’s like 70% cheaper and the games actually start to matter.

what is a "G"?

And if it’s so important to cell phone service, why don’t they use 1,000 of them? Why stop at 4?

by long time listener on Oct 27, 2011 10:43 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

The G stands for "Generation"

So 4G would be the fourth generation of the wireless data protocols, which is to say much more efficient and therefore higher bandwidth than the preceding generation of wireless phones (and of course the network equipment which makes up the backbone of the wireless network, without which your phone is not much more than a paperweight with flashy lights).

As to whether a 4G phone is more important to you than a 3G phone, that depends entirely on what you use that device. It’s mainly advertising. Truthfully, if you buy a 4G phone now, it will only occasionally work better than your 3G phone, because the networks have yet to be fully built up and optimized.

If all you want to do is make phone calls, you are LIVING IN THE PAST!!!

by waw on Oct 27, 2011 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I use a phone to call people. I use a computer to use the internet and never the twin shall meet.

by jetanumba2 on Oct 27, 2011 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

There is a definite place for smartphone technology

When I’m traveling, the GPS functions are awesome, as are the features that allow me to find nearby stores/restaurants/hotels, etc. My PC works for that when I’m home, but if I’m on the road, I can’t just pull over and fire up my laptop (not unless I have a wireless network card, which uses similar technology to the smartphone).

But, it’s easy to overuse these smartphones, to the point where you are spending too much time with your nose in the screen, and missing the scenery of the place you are visiting…

by waw on Oct 27, 2011 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

but instead you can use your smartphone while youre driving?

by jetanumba2 on Oct 27, 2011 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

i suppose. I saw a commercial advertising the fact that you can now talk to your phone without having to hit a button. Yeah, that’s totally what smartphones should be used for!

You sound like my wife did before I got her a smart phone. Now, she uses it all of the time. And, the prices are getting much more reasonable as new models (and 4G) become available.

My point was

I could pull over and use my smartphone (or hand it to my wife to use) and have the network connection I need to find directions, for example. That’s not an option with a laptop. I am a big believer in not using your mobile phone (smart or otherwise) while driving, and I wish they enforced the law against that in Chicago better than they do. I would not be surprised to learn that mobile phone use causes more accidents than drunk driving. If not today, then eventually.

I think that tomorrow night favors them

Tonight, the Rangers were riding high after taking 2 of 3 at home and having the chance to win it all in their opponent’s house. Now they still have that chance, but the momentum has shifted. Now the Cards are the ones coming of a huge victory to force a Game 7, and they did it in front of their home crowd, and they can now win it all in front of that home crowd.
