New York Yankees News: Concerns and Possible Transactions
Everyone seems to have an opinion about who the Yankees should sign/trade for/release these days, so let's take a look at what some people are saying.
International Business Times lists the five main concerns for the New York Yankees. What do you think?
Ed Valentine of SB Nation New York thinks that CC Sabathia "Has the Yankees over a Very Large Barrel." The Yankees certainly do not have the leverage in negotiations.
What is up with everyone claiming the Yankees will sign this DH, or that DH, or move this player to DH full time to sign this player? Speaking of which...
Bleeding Yankee Blue takes a look at if the Yankees will sign Prince Fielder.
Sporting News believes that the Yankees will not sign David Ortiz. I certainly hope they don't.
Questions of the Day:
Who do you think will win the World Series? In how many games?
What do you think is the main reason the Yankees lost the ALDS?
Rank these people in value to the Yankees: Alex Rodriguez, Brian Cashman, Joe Girardi, Damon Oppenheimer, Hal Steinbrenner, Randy Levine, Derek Jeter.
Look forward to a look back at the best games of the 2011 season from me at 9 a.m.!

right.
because players on the field aren’t worth more to the team than people who sit on their asses.
Main reason for loss in ALDS
Lack of timely hitting with RISP.

Who do you think will win the World Series? How many games?
Texas in 6. Too much hitting for the relatively inadequate starting pitching of the Cardinals
What do you think the main reason of the many reasons the Yankees lost their ALDS series is?
Poor hitting in high-leverage situations.

In what manner. Historically? 2012 season? Assuming it’s the latter, Arod, Cashman, Jeter, Girardi, everyone else.

Isn't that the answer to all of life's questions, after all?

Jeter, Ardo, Girardi, Cashman, Steinbrenner, Oppenheimer, Levine
How much does Randy Levine actually control with the team? The Steinbrenners own it, Cashman makes most of the decisions, Joe does the day-to-day managing…
Soriano was apparently Levine's pet project.

As I’ve said in other posts, the Yankees already have a full-time DH, either A-Rod, Jeter, or Teixeira, we just don’t know which one it will be yet and how soon he’ll be relegated to that role.
If they want to sign a DH to a one year contract, that’s fine, but anything longer than isn’t going to happen. Neither is Montero as the DH.
true
In a perverse way, I think Ortiz would be a better fit than Fielder. He might be willing to accept a one-year deal, though I suppose if he is, the Red Sox would sign him. Unless the collapse has raised a lot of bad blood (which is possible), in which case he may enjoy the opportunity to stick it to the Red Sox. But I still think we should avoid a full-time DH and instead build up our bench and leave the DH spot flexible.

I expect the DH to be a combination next year:
Montero 3 days
A Rod or Jeter 1 day
Another regular (Swish, Cano, Grandy, etc) 1 day
Someone else (Jones, maybe?) 2 days
Then have Montero catch 3-4 days and Martin catch 3-4 days, Cervelli or Romine as backup catcher
I do not think Montero
will be good enough to catch that much.
Wish I were wrong but I don’t think so.

Literally (in Chris Traeger voice)
one hit at the right in the ALDS wins it for us.
And I don’t understand the Ortiz hate. Didn’t Johnny Damon and Wade Boggs play for us? And what about Roger Clemens?! (BTW, this doesn’t mean I support signing Ortiz, but it’s merely because we have several DH options, not b/c he’s a Sock.)
Right
We have Arod, while we need him to play third he needs reps at DH.
We have Montero, While we’d like him to be able to catch, at this point he’s primarily a DH. (IMO, please save your breath arguing this point, this is just my opinion if you don’t agree say so and move on)
We need DH rest days for Granderson.
Therefore, IMO we should not spend money or a roster spot on a dedicated DH. There is no room at all for a 1st base/DH, Perhaps a position backup we need with the bat to contributr at DH.
Andruw Jones was a useful Yankee this year, although he reduced Brett Gardner’s playing time more than I would have liked.

Yes!
Travis is a P&R fan? Awesomesauce!
I didn’t hate the two of them like I hate David Ortiz. As I’ve said many times, Ortiz is one of my, if not the least favorite player of mine in the MLB. Everyone thinks he’s this nice guy that just loves the game, when in reality he’s no better than A-Rod, who everyone mocks 24/7.

Questions...
Who do you think will win the World Series? How many games?
Rangers in 6. Cards have been playing way over their heads and Texas’s lineup is just on fire right now.
What do you think the main reason of the many reasons the Yankees lost their ALDS series is?
Failing to get ONE hit in game 5 with the bases loaded…TWICE. If A-Rod, Tex or Swish had gotten ONE hit, the Yanks would’ve been in the ALCS.
Rank these people in value to the Yankees: Alex Rodriguez, Brian Cashman, Joe Girardi, Damon Oppenheimer, Hal Steinbrenner, Randy Levine, Derek Jeter.
Cashman, Hal, A-Rod, Jeter, Oppenheimer, Girardi and Levine. Levine is practically useless and would benefit the Yanks by quitting.
I like this order
although I’d switch Hal and Girardi. Was that a mistake? I’d probably put Jeter ahead of A-Rod, too. A-Rod’s hurt too much.
"Unpleasant Internet Dude"
Success starts at the top
and if Hank was running day to day ops instead of Hal, I think the Yanks would be more like the Cubbies. Hal is involved, but he also knows enough to let the baseball people make the important baseball decisions. Hank would be George circa 1990.
A-Rod is important to this lineup, probably THE most important person in the lineup. If he’s healthy and plays like the MVP Alex (which will probably never happen again), he’s one of the most devastating hitters in baseball. Jeter is important, but a healthy A-Rod changes the way the opposing team pitches to guys like Tex and Cano.
A-Rod was playing like an MVP earlier in the 2011 season
He will still go through hot stretches, and when he gets hot then there’s nobody else on this team who can carry an offense the way he can. The key is to keep him healthy and in the lineup as much as possible to maximize those streaks.
Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!
Too many "ifs"
in both your analyses. I don’t go by the "ifs’, I go by the “is’”…
"Unpleasant Internet Dude"
Why we lost
Not enough runs in the games we lost.
This is not really as superficial as it sounds. Teams with great hitting tend to win blowouts. Teams with great pitching tend to win 1 run games.
I really think our pitching wasn’t good enough at the end.
Colon ran out of gas or was hurt.
Hughes was hurt. I hope he can comeback, but I am not sure.
Nova’s minor injury in the last game was therefore the straw that broke their back.
So, too many pitching injuies or not enough depth. Remember Joba, Feliciano, Marte, etc. One might even argue we still suffer from the loss of MCW and a bad choice on who to keep between Hughes, Joba and IPK.
Maybe just bad luck but it is what it is.
Top of the rotation guys are hard to get, and just paying them isn’t fool proof (ref John Lackey and AJ and many ex Yankees, ie Vazquez, Pavano, Brown, Johnson etc.)
"I’m never really surprised, but I am thrilled sometimes." Joe G. 2010
The pitching was good
Lowest team ERA in the LDS of any team. A-Rod, Swish or Tex gets ONE hit with the bases loaded in Game 5 and it would have been Mo on the mound in the 9th closing out the ALDS.
Questions and Answers
Who do you think will win the World Series? In how many games?
I’m rooting for St. Louis, but I think Texas will just mash up their non-Carpenter pitching. Texas in 5.
What do you think is the main reason the Yankees lost the ALDS?The immediate reason was the inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities with timely hits in game 5. But to expand it to why the Yankees probably weren’t going to win the World Series this year anyway, starting pitching depth is the answer.
Rank these people in value to the Yankees: Alex Rodriguez, Brian Cashman, Joe Girardi, Damon Oppenheimer, Hal Steinbrenner, Randy Levine, Derek Jeter.
1. A-Rod, 2. Cashman, 3. Hal, 4. Levine, 5. Girardi, 6. Jeter, 7. Oppenheimer
A-Rod is the lynchpin of this team in many ways. Cashman is valuable in the sense that any team’s GM is one of its most valuable assets. Hal signs the checks. Levine, though he seems like a tremendous douche, is the main reason the new stadium got built which has produced gobs and gobs of money to be spent on players. Girardi has some bad moments but his ability to not burn out the pen is an asset. Jeter’s a good not great player at this stage. Oppenheimer…as I understand it…runs the draft which hasn’t been particularly successful for us. Most of our player development success has come from international signings which I’m not sure he’s in charge of (correct me if I’m wrong).

You mean that one month when he played about every other day?
Not a big enough sample size. He’s the cleanup hitter, he’s crucial to this lineup and he’s crucial to the Yankees success. To suggest that the Yankees are somehow better off without him is foolish.

Doesn't mean he's not incredibly important to the team

Yes, they need A-Rod to be his old self to be successful
But, I agree with David D that they played better when he was out. He was NOT READY to come back either with the surgery nor with the bad thumb…he just wasn’t himself. They MAY (and I emphasize MAY) have been better off without him in the playoffs for that reason.
HOWEVER, to say that he is not a linchpin for 2012 and future years is, I believe, mistaken.
Gardner, D-Rob, Joba, IPK, Ajax
though not all have been successful with us, Oppenheimer has drafted a lot of talent.
On Oppenheimer

Id probably put Girardi at the bottom of that list
and not just because I don’t think he is a good manager, but also because the Yankees manager, whoever it is, has a somewhat easy job because of the players he has at his disposal. And while managing a clubhouse can be an important aspect of some managers jobs, I dont believe it is so here where guys like Jeter, Mo, CC, and Arod essentially run the clubhouse. Girardi does a good job of managing the bullpen but other than that, I dont see one attribute of his that makes him more important than these other people.
I'm looking for Ray Finkle.....and a clean pair of shorts.

Who will win the World Series? I have it narrowed down to the Cardinals or Rangers. I know less about the Cards than I should. Do they still have Ozzie Smith and Ken Oberkfell? If yes, then I like the Rangers in 7. Ozzie and Oberkfell must be 55 years old.
Main reason the Yankees lost? Hitting with RISP. 2nd would be failure of CC to win a game, and his unsuccessful relief appearance.
Cashman, Jeter, Girardi, with the rest tied for last because they don’t do anything. I expect little in the future from ARod. Jeter can still play and is the face of the franchise for another two years. Cashman will be around the longest and have the most impact on the team’s success. Girardi seems to be at every game, and has something to do with who plays and when.
I for one can live without the sanctimonious fat hypocrite from Boston.

I know they don’t have Joe Magrane anymore. He’s on MLB network.
Jesus Montero has to be a full-time catcher, or the Yankees have to trade him. One or the other. Based on the age and contracts of the other players on this team, that's the only place he fits long-term on the Yankees roster.
lolwut?
Jeter can still play, but you expect very little in the future from A-Rod? A-Rod was better than Jeter this year, and thats with A-Rod playing in very limited games and playing hurt any time he played after June.
Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!
Exactly. 'Expect' means how I believe the future will play out.
I have no expectations about the past. I expect ARod to continue to suffer a series of nagging injuries as his body begins to break down, with longer, slower, and incomplete recoveries. In other words, I expect the last half of 2011 to be more representative of his future than the first half of the season.
Likewise, I expect the same from Derek Jeter. Despite the fact that he is older than ARod, he has been healthier, and he has recovered his hitting stroke. I think it is reasonable to expect Derek Jeter to at least match last season’s batting average, and to exceed his power numbers.

by signing a DH
that basically means that the yanks have no faith in montero. either that or they have no faith in russel martin
If the Yankees have 25 off season priorities
Then signing a DH is priority # 26.
