I'm sure the network big wigs would have preferred a big market team or two to make LCS

But they can’t complain too much about an LDS season that has 19 out of 20 possible games, and an LCS season with at least 12 out of 14 games. As long as they get at least six games out of the WS, I guess.

Cinderella story?

Something I’ve been thinking about today:

If STL wins the LCS, and somehow managed to beat TEX in a WS, they would have beaten the two top teams in their league by WAR (PHI 1, MIL 2) and the top AL team (TEX). That has to be really rare.

I was going to go w. seeding, but Texas was a deceptive #2 (one win behind the NYY).

I’ll say this, I think they are the team that was predicted by the least amount of people to win it all.

Better or worse, they saw this as their window

Fielder’s gone, Greinke might be gone in 2 years.

If MIL knew that Bret Lawrie was gonna be BRET LAWRIE this early, and if they knew the NL Central was going to be this bad this year, maybe they don’t deal Marcum (since they didn’t need the wins).

But realistically, They were trying to vault STL & CIN preseason.

So I was watching SNL last night

And in the opening skit they made an A-Rod-overpaid-choker joke, but he had a higher 2010 ALDS OPS than Swisher, Jeter, Martin, and Teixeira soooooooooooo…

by Briceratops on Oct 16, 2011 8:32 PM EDT reply actions

"Unpleasant Internet Dude"

He struck out with the bases loaded

So did Swisher. So did Russell Martin. Jeter blew countless opportunities to drive in runs in both games 2 and 3.

Yea A-Rod sucked but he is not in any way the only one who did not perform or the only one who did not perform in crucial spots. A-Rod gets the most attention because of who he is, not because he was somehow worse in the postseason than those other four guys, because he wasn’t.

Interesting...
Baseball officials are increasingly convinced that the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters will post righthander Yu Darvish to the major leagues, and industry folks wonder: How much will teams pay for the right to negotiate with Darvish?

The Red Sox paid $51,111,111 five years ago to talk with Daisuke Matsuzaka, and that hasn’t worked out very well. The expectation is that, given Boston’s disappointment with Matsuzaka, teams won’t bid as high to get to talk with Darvish.

So if thats true, then the posting fee will be less for this one rather than more like everyone has assumed? Well whatever happens it’ll be interesting to see how the bidding works for him.

by nyyrocks29 on Oct 16, 2011 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

If not Johnson, then who?

I can’t see the Yanks going into next season without adding a solid #2 starter. Even if AJ pitches like AJ of the last 2 weeks of the season, he’s no more than a #3. I like Nova alot, but we have to see if he has a dip next year. Unless CJ Wilson dominates in the World Series, I don’t see the Yanks going after him.

by nj23nut on Oct 16, 2011 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

No AJ is mid-rotation at this point at best

I agree that they’d be better off getting a #2 starter and really Yu Darvish is the best bet with that. If they don’t get him, then I’d go for CJ Wilson. If they don’t get either, then go from within and hope for the best, because I don’t want them trading Montero.

I just think this will happen

He has more velocity, which he can’t sustain as a starter. Also this will negate the need for a bunch of unreliable mops.

"Unpleasant Internet Dude"

by david d on Oct 16, 2011 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Getting Joba back will eliminate some of that mop brigade

When Joba comes back, they have Mo-Robertson-Soriano-Chamberlain-Logan with guaranteed spots in the pen. Logan is the weakest of that group, but not in the mop territory or Proctor or Mitre by any stretch. And hopefully Cory Wade comes back as well and maybe a FA signing here or there.

Either way, the bullpen is already one of the best in the league. They need starters, not relievers. Hughes is a starter- he’s already had a successful season as a starter. Give him a chance to do that again.

True

But young dominant pitching can quickly develop a solid team. If a couple of bats get hot, they can win a few games.

by nj23nut on Oct 16, 2011 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

They could

It’s possible, but I always remember when they had Felix and Lee at the top of their rotation and people were picking them to win the West, and they ended up in last place because they couldn’t hit.

Bats are important. The pitchers aren’t going to throw shutouts every time. They’ll have bad games and there will be games every week with lesser pitchers on the mound where they’ll need to score. That rotation is nice to build around, but they need a bat or two. And Smoak needs to get better.

Depending on how much money Seattle has, if I were them I’d seriously consider making a run at Fielder.

Switching gears, I am SOOO glad the Giants won today.

Plus Washington and Dallas lost. Never thought I’d root for a Boston team, but I really REALLY HATE the Cowboys.

So am I

Really put me into a good mood after watching that.

Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!

always root for your own interest

The Cowboys losing helps the Giants. For that matter, so did the Redskins, even though the Eagles won in the process.

I ALWAYS root for the Cowboys to lose

I hate them ALMOST as much as I hate the Red Sox. It also ticks me off when NEW YORK YANKEES fans a Cowgirls fans. Show some friggin loyalty ya bandwagoners! :P

who is a Cowboys fan is a bandwaggoner, no doubt. Probably bandwaggoned both the Yankees and ’Boys. Sad.

No way.

The Eagles winning did not help the Giants.

Look at the Eagles Schedule as opposed to the Giants.

Eggs
vs. Dal
vs. Chi
vs. Ari
@ NYG
vs. NE
@ SEA
@ MIA
VS. NYJ
@ DAL
vs. WAS

NYG
vs. MIA
@ NE
@ SF
VS. PHI
@ NO
vs. GB
@ DAL
VS. WAS
@ NYJ (fake road game)
vs. DAL

It is a very big possibility that they are both 5-4 heading into their second matchup and then the Giants will NEED a win because their onslaught begins after that. I still can’t believe how uneven the schedule is. The Giuants get New Orleans AND Green Bay.

the Redskins were ahead of the Giants

Knocking them down a peg helps us, but we’re going to have to help ourselves if we want to get to the playoffs.

I know, but I expect the Skins to fade quickly.

There is no way they can win the division with Grossman and John Beck as their QB combo.

But now we’re in the driver’s seat.

by long time listener on Oct 16, 2011 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

That can change quickly though with the huge disparity in the schedules.

The G-men will have their chance to break some records though.

NE will have a 20-Game home winning streak on the line and GB might still be unbeaten.

NE looked beatable today

Their defense doesn’t scare me at all. If the Giants can force a couple of turnovers and limit their own mistakes (always an issue), the Pats can be taken.

by long time listener on Oct 16, 2011 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

I think Buffalo is a more complete team than New England right now, and except for 2 big plays, the Giants played very well today. Cruz was a non-factor, though.

Fuck these playoffs.....

I never ever want to see playoffs like this again. The 2 “world series” teams, and I use that term loosely because the Cards and Rangers barely apply, have gotten at least 15 outs out of their starter 3 total times. (2 for Stl, 1 for TEX). This world series random how the fuck are they here series is going to blow. Excuse me while I light myself on fire now.

With a 2nd wild card team and the 1 game playoff, the chances of crap making the World Series increases.

Postseason record for teams when a starter goes less than 5 innings
All playoff teams 1903-2010: 213-564 for a .274 win %
2011 Rangers: 6-1
2011 Cards (once game 6 is complete): 5-2

Well to be fair, you point to ancient history as if it’s any indication of what happened this series, which really doesn’t mean much. Yes the starters sucked, but so did the others teams starters.

derek holland had some poor outings and cj wilson had one bad inning after a double play ball turned into an rbi double. their offense has been solid and their bullpen lights out.

if you hate texas you're missing out on some cool cities

like dallas and austin. also, the rangers have had solid attendance records for the last 17 years without winning anything.

by brighten the corners on Oct 17, 2011 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Not saying the cities aren’t bad. But I’m not fan of the state as a whole for certain reasons. (rather not start something political or etc here) Also i dislike it’s fans because they boo players they TRADED away, and if u watched game one, they randomly broke out a “Yankees Suck” chant which is pretty petty in my book.

Rangers-Brewers "never won it" derby would have been fun

Now that I’m faced with the possibility of a TEX WS win, the Cards are suddenly much more attractive.

Also, they would be one of the great comeback stories of all time, given how they got here and who they had to beat.

by PortlandYankee on Oct 17, 2011 1:09 AM EDT reply actions

it's not really remarkable that a team squeaked into the playoffs

after the wild card favorite experienced an epic collapse. however, their advancing to the world series doesn’t really surprise me. the phillies’ offense was terrible and they never seemed like a complete team, notwithstanding their record, and the brewers looked deflated with horrendous defense and the worst pitching by far throughout the playoffs.
