ALCS Game Six: Tigers at Rangers

The Tigers will send hard throwing right-hander Max Scherzer to the mound with hopes of forcing a decisive game seven, while Derek Holland will try to send the Rangers to the Fall Classic for the second consecutive season.

In game two, Scherzer was in line for a victory before he ran into Nelson Cruz, and Holland couldn't get out of the third inning. Who do you have, tonight?

Jackson's post-season so far is Sorianoesque

I remember thinking in 2003 “Jesus, we HAVE to trade this guy. There’s no way to come back from a post-season like that.” This was well before A-Rod was a gleam in Cashman’s eye.

I wonder how DET will react to Jackson’s .527 OPS w. 19 Ks?

by PortlandYankee on Oct 15, 2011 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Because of IPK

Not Austin Jackson. I think it’s pretty clear that Austin Jackson sucks in everything except defense right now. Whether he’ll improve or not is still to be seen.

by bloppy_ploppy on Oct 15, 2011 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

IPK has done well, yes.

But it’s in the NL West, so no one knows what that would translate to in the AL East. Either way, I don’t think even that makes it a bad trade for us. Last year it was all AJax, all the time. He’s so great! He can totally keep this up! This year it’s IPK.

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Oct 15, 2011 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions

He had a great season

I’m not completely convinced he’s a pitcher capable of 20 wins a year- I’ll need to see him do it again. And he might. Who knows?

I’m happy with the trade though. Whether AJax gets better or if IPK continues to pitch at a Cy Young level in the NL is irrelevant to me. We got an MVP candidate out of that trade and I want him on the Yankees for a long time.

Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!

Good pitching beats good hitting in the postseason.

by Lord Duggan on Oct 15, 2011 9:21 PM EDT reply actions

TEX pitching is highly underrated

TEX has a lower team pitching ERA than DET. They’re about 4.00 for the post-season.

Indeed, TEX pitching was ranked 5th by Fangraphs this season (their top 4 starters all produced 3+ WAR). Their true talent is probably UNDERRATED, since it only counts a half season of Uehara & Mike Adams.

/buzzkill.

by PortlandYankee on Oct 15, 2011 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

What I’m saying is that their starting pitching in this series has been god awful, and yet they are mashing their way past the big bad unbeatable Verlander/Fister duo with a relentless offense.

So, no, my buzz of narrative destruction has not been killed.

by Lord Duggan on Oct 15, 2011 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know...Team ERA in the series is 3.83

I guess if by pitching you mean “starting” pitching, yes they have been awful. But they’ve held the Tigers to 2 or 3 runs in 3 games (maybe 4 tonight). Their bullpen has given up 3 runs (2 by Uehara, 1 by Ogando).

by PortlandYankee on Oct 15, 2011 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Using ERA in such a small sample size?

by bloppy_ploppy on Oct 15, 2011 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

In the playoffs, all sample sizes are small sample sizes

Although it’s worth noting that for 2011 the Rangers team ERA was…3.79. Almost exactly the same.

by PortlandYankee on Oct 15, 2011 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

hmmm

more coincidence probably

by bloppy_ploppy on Oct 15, 2011 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

His point is that the good hitting of Texas is beating the good pitching of Detroit pretty handedly.

A lot of people like to claim that GOOD PITCHING SHUTS DOWN GOOD HITTING, but the Rangers are mashing their way to the world series right now against the so called good pitching.

Jesus Montero fangirl

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Oct 15, 2011 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

Better hitting beats good pitching

by bloppy_ploppy on Oct 15, 2011 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Except their "good pitching" was mostly narrative

Their team ERA was 4.04…their starters were only ranked 7th by WAR (just after the Yankees) it was Verlander and three guys whose peripherals were better than their pedigree.

The Rangers actually came into the playoffs with deeper SP, but the narrative put all the weight on Verlander.

by PortlandYankee on Oct 15, 2011 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

The point I forgot: The Rangers SP was 3rd in WAR this year

It’s just that their hitting was 2nd in WAR and had all of the “stars”, while their pitching was “OMG they lost Cliff Lee!” and a bunch of lesser known guys. So we focused on the “deep lineup” narrative.

by PortlandYankee on Oct 15, 2011 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

No one is saying that the Rangers didn't have good pitching.

They aren’t winning these games because of some shut down performances by their starters.

Jesus Montero fangirl

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Oct 15, 2011 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

their starting pitching in this series has been god awful

This is the whole point. Every postseason we are bombarded with the narrative that starting pitching wins in the playoffs and the team with the best starting pitching will win. It is untrue.

by Lord Duggan on Oct 15, 2011 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea, but it does help

Verlander/Fister has a better chance of shutting down a relentless offense then say Colon/Garcia does. It’s true to an extent, but it just doesn’t mean that they will shut that offense down every time as ESPN has convinced so many clueless fans to believe.

I still want Yu Darvish.

Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!

by nyyrocks29 on Oct 15, 2011 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Colon/Garcia isn't really what people would call good pitching.

It’s ok pitching, but not what people would really classify as good in the playoffs, so that comparison isn’t really meaningful.

Jesus Montero fangirl

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Oct 15, 2011 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Fine

Verlander/Fister is better than say Sabathia/Garcia (which would have been the Yankees top 2 in the ALCS I assume), and therefore would have a better chance of shutting down the Texas offense. But just because that is the case doesn’t mean Texas would win the series.

Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!

by nyyrocks29 on Oct 15, 2011 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't see anyone saying that that's the case.

Texas isn’t winning these games because of their starting pitching. That remains the only point being made here.

Jesus Montero fangirl

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Oct 15, 2011 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I was simply agreeing with Duggan when he said the best starting pitching doesn’t always win. You need offense in the playoffs because your pitchers may not always get the job done, no matter how good they were in the regular season or how good the names are.

Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!

by nyyrocks29 on Oct 15, 2011 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

…….Well yes, of course it’s better to have Justin Verlander than Freddy Garcia. This is not the point at all.

Pitching is ONE aspect of baseball, with run prevention making up 50% of the team’s goal. It is continually presented as if good starting pitching is much more important than that, with the games being in the playoffs somehow magnifying the importance of starting pitching.

I find this to be nonsense. That is all.

by Lord Duggan on Oct 15, 2011 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably because it's a short series

And in a short series you go through a teams best pitchers, where as during the regular season you often face lesser pitchers and lesser teams and get wins off them.

Not saying I agree with it, just saying that this is probably the rationale for this sort of thinking.

Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!

by nyyrocks29 on Oct 15, 2011 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Both teams use their best starters. They also use their best lineups. You’re not going to see Phil Hughes starting a game, but you’re also not going to see Cervelli, Chavez, Nunez, etc. in the starting lineup.
