What To Do About Andruw Jones?
He had a surprisingly effective season (.247/.356/.495, 122 OPS+) over 222 PA while playing left and rightfield.
The Yankees paid him $2 million this year. Would you re-up him at that price for 2012?

Sure why not?
He was excellent in the second half, and those numbers are including his shitty first half where I wanted him off the team or DFA’d.
I was dead wrong about Jones, thats for sure. At the ASB I wanted him DFA’d, traded, or anything to happen to get him off the team. But they kept him and he was a nice bat to have in the second half so I’ll eat my words on that one.
So long as it’s still cheap, absolutely bring him back. Though it would probably result in a platoon with either Gardner or Jesus (neither of which I support), he’s still a good hitter, he proved he’s still a good hitter and I want him back on this team.
If it were me and they absolutely had to bring Russ back, what I would do is play Russ behind the plate, Montero at DH and Gardner in left vs. righties and Montero behind the plate, Gardner in left and Jones as the DH vs. lefties. That way, only Martin gets platooned and Jesus may actually get some playing time behind the plate next season.
Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!
I want him back
He had a really good season against LHP, and would be best served playing every day vs. LHP (rest Gardner 2/3 games & Granderson 1/3, shifting Gardner to CF).
There are some reasons for another FO to worry about Jones (his 151/94 platoon split, which however would be good enough to play LF every day), and his H/R split (147/115). The problem is that some other FO might be dumb enough to offer him $5 million for a year in LF/DH, when we shouldn’t want him for more than $2.5.
He won't DH much, or at all
Between the aging Jeters and A-Rods of the world and Jesus Montero, Jones would primarily play the OF against lefties.
"Unpleasant Internet Dude"
It was nice having a guy able to come off the bench with power and decent defense
As long as he’s used primarily against lefties, and as long as it does not result in banishing Gardner against all lefties, why not? That kind of bench production is hard to find cheaply.
It's actually not a bad idea to banish Gardner against lefties
His numbers regressed this year, especially against LHP (79 wRC), and he is a tremendous weapon off the bench (PR, PH vs. RHP, defensive replacement). There is also some concern that he’s worn down the past two years, and might need more rest than Granderson.

Me too!
The votes are screwed up because
1. The Yankees lost and they want to blow the team up.
2. Most of those “fans” logged on last week.
3. They can’t appreciate how valuable bench production is for a ballclub.
The quest for excellence is eternal.
I don't get it either
the guy was one of the better bench players in the league last year. I highly doubt an upgrade can be found.
He didn’t show up in the playoffs, just like Swisher. Get rid of both of them.

I agree with sing_or_die_1818. They didn't get enough time to light up.
Our pitching is where we didn’t show up… We gotta do something with the back end of our rotation.

The team gave up 5 runs or less in every loss
It’s not like they got blown out. The offense did not score despite many chances. The pitching kept us in every game.
He sucked in the first half, but was absolutely great for us in the second
Well worth the bench role. His defense isn’t crap either.
It actually isn't
I thought it was because he always looks like he’s moving like an old timer out in the outfield, but watching him enough you notice that he always seems to catch it and be right under the ball. He’s probably the best Yankee outfielder on defense as far as reading a fly ball and taking the correct route. Just doesn’t have the range he used to have.

I was agreeing with you.

I voted yes
I want to continue to see him make catches without looking

Uh why?
He’ll be cheap low risk high reward player for the Yankees. Plus if he can turn it around we can trade Swisher some where along the line and have one of the best defensive outfields in the game.
Sizemore isn’t going to cost us 10 million.
Neither is Jones...

the jokes in the game thread would be interesting
I’m not convinced he’s otherwise an upgrade.

Low risk high reward.
His injury history is bad, but he’s still a somewhat young player. If he can become good again then the Yankees got themselves a steal.
Jones is low risk with moderate reward
No matter what, the Yankees are going to want a right-handed OF bat off the bench, and I can’t think of too many better than Jones. Sizemore might be a good risk, but even if he does come here and pan out, the Yankees are still going to want a righty.

oh, the grand-dick-size OF...
should bring in a lot of female fans, and size queens in general…

I cant find his stats vs lefties,
But Michael Cuddyer wouldnt be a bad alternative. Very versatile can play multiple positions. Doesnt have the defense of jones in the outfield but i think he would be a good fit. the problem would be i dont think he wants a part time/ platoon role yet at this point in his career.
Sure, why not?

Why do the Yankees need to deal with those theatrics?

Jones or Swisher? Hahaha

Jones was Marcus Thames with a glove. Nothing wrong with that.
Since the Yankees don’t have a better option for 4th outfielder, I voted to bring him back. If they could land someone good enough to make Gardner the 4th outfielder, then my vote would be different. But as things stand, they need Jones.
