Baseball season is over for me

I am not a baseball fan. I am a Yankee fan.

I can appreciate those who feel differently. I feel that way about the NFL and college basketball. But not baseball.

Thinking of possible available pitchers in trades this off-season

Any of these interest you?

Wandy Rodriguez
Brandon McCarthy
Derek Lowe
Ricky Nolasco
Chris Volstad
Mike Pelfrey
Francisco Liriano

Less likely

John Danks
Gavin Floyd

Pure speculation, of course.

ther pitching staff as a whole

outside of dickey, that is, has been some combination of mediocre to awful. the pen is terrible and their #3-5 pitchers gave them squat. pelfrey is no better than a 5 pitcher on a decent team and a 4 on a bad one.

that’s being generous in both cases, too.

well Jon Neise had a pretty good year

Pelfrey and Gee were basically league average and Capuano was a little over. If they have a healthy Santana their rotation is above average (not by much). They just don’t have that Ace™ to put them over

by jetanumba2 on Oct 10, 2011 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

pelfrey gives you one thing

200 innings of mediocre pitching. he doesn’t strike people out, he has a lot of fly balls and in general is a waste of a uniform. he also hits a wall in the late innings and fucks up miserably at some point come inning 6 or 7.

please, take it from a mets fan, you do not want him pitching 15 games in yankees stadium. lemme put it another way – there are a loooooooot of mets fans out there who wouldn’t be upset if the mets just cut him. i don’t think it will happen due to another year of rebuilding and salary constraints, but you won’t see too many tears shed if it happens.

unless pelfrey magically turns into a carriage and soon

his pumpkin act has gotten very, very old. go look at some game threads on amazin ave when he goes to pitch. no one has any confidence in him, and he seems to either hit a physical wall in the 6th or 7th every single time or he’s got some terrible weak mental block that makes him screw up. i don’t buy into the psych aspects, so i think he simply just doesn’t have what it takes to be anything other than a #4 starter on a bad team as his ceiling.

go look at his numbers. they are not good at all and he’s in a pitchers park.

compare him to another mediocre NL east team’s starter, the marlins, and a guy also on your list, nolasco: nolasco has a full 1.5 batters per inning higher k/9 rate, a full walk/9 less and a much, much better xfip.

he’s not a complete waste of uniform, but you put him in this ballpark and he will vomit all over the place. if it weren’t for the money, i’d be happy to see him go.

I actually would prefer him to stay.

I have a bad feeling if he signed up with Chicago he would trade for Crawford or something. Not that I think Carl is as bad of a player as he performed this year but I would prefer if the 130 million or so left on his contract stayed in Boston.

by Briceratops on Oct 10, 2011 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I want him gone because he's actually a pretty decent GM (not elite like some say he is)

and the whole process would hurt them a lot more than they think…though the new GM will probably start trying to build a farm system, which would be unfortunate. I guess I’m torn.

by Scooby Snacks on Oct 10, 2011 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

no idea, i just made it up

but i’d have to say Billy Beane, AA, Brian Cashman (maybe I’m biased) and maybe even Andrew Friedman (Rays GM) considering the amount of talent they’ve been able to draft (though that might fall on more of the development side). I’m just spitballing here, but I just don’t see Epstein as being as top of the line as some make him seem.

All of these via MLBTR, by the way
Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun believes that the club is more likely to land Jose Reyes in free agency than re-sign Prince Fielder, writes Mike Puma of the New York Post.

Braun assumes that Fielder will likely command upwards of $150MM this winter whereas Reyes can be had for around $120MM. The four-time All-Star was quick to admit that he’s a huge fan of Reyes.

“[Reyes] is dynamic, man — he is one of the most exciting players in the game,” the 27-year-old said. “He plays with a lot of energy and a lot of emotion and I enjoy watching him play. He’s one of my favorite players to watch. Whenever their games are on, I love watching him, man. He always plays the game the right way. He always plays hard. He runs everything out.”

I’d give Colon another incentive laden deal to be the longman out of the pen. Maybe give Wang a one year incentive laden contract and take on Broxton as a reclamation project after his injured season (if he comes back healthy we’d have an indestructible pen: Broxton, Joba, Soriano, Robertson, Mo) though maybe our resources would be better spent looking for a better lefty option

You're annoying when you do this.

Whenever someone says something to kid around you take it to the next level. Pet peeve of mine.

If you want a real argument it’s quite obvious. We need starting pitching help. The best on the market are Darvish and Wilson. We really don’t have a solid #2 starter, and after seeing Hughes go from solid to blown out arm I can’t be to quick to say Nova is going to be a solid #2.

I think CC is going to stay, either not opting out or us paying him a monster contract. But after that we have Nova, Hughes, Burnett, ?

No one knows. So not caring about C.J. or his situation isn’t the best thing for the Yankees.

Residing on the BEast coast.

by DCyanks21 on Oct 10, 2011 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s sort of sad when people just give up on an argument with no reason with a silly comment.

Nova didn’t go through the same terrible program Hughes did. Wilson would get a Burnett-like deal, when there are going to be much better pitchers available in 2013, and the Yankees can easily just go with a competition for the fifth starter spot.

You're too serious.

Nova’s arm tightened to end the ALDS.

Relying on the young arms could work, but it could also turn out like Hughes.

I don’t like the Hughes/Burnett part of the rotation. I personally think both of those guys are 5 starters right now. Only Hughes can change that value, but as of now we have an ace a 3 and two 5’s. Hughes may be a 4.

Comparing Nova's flexor strain to Hughes' dead arm is a bit of a reach

Also, Hughes had a bad second half in 2010, while Nova got better as the year went on.

so can relying on old arms

it has nothing to do with health or talent, it has everything to do with knowing what you’re going to get, regardless of how much better a younger pitcher might end up being. We saw that all year here

I don't have quite as low an opinion on Hughes and AJ as you do

I think Hughes will bounce back and so long as AJ keeps working on the improved mechanics that he and Rothschild worked on in September, I think he could have a solid season. He was solid for almost all of 2011 (except for August), and his peripherals were good aside from the inflated HR rate which should regress.

I do think they need another starter though. And Darvish is the option with the highest upside, so he’s the guy I want.

Brandon brought up a good point about the 2013 class of pitchers.

But I doubt we make the playoffs without signing a quality pitcher this year.

2013 names that I like :

Cain (Though I don’t think he fits Yankees Stadium.)
Carmona
Danks
Floyd
Greinke
Hamels
Haren
Liriano
Marcum
McCarthy
Anibal Sanchez
Jonathan Sanchez
Ervin Santana
James Shields

My real point is I find it infuriating

when teams fail in those high percentage run situations. Like when Martin and Gardner (esp Martin) didn’t get the job done last game. As a fan I feel like “If you guys don’t want it then what the hell am I sitting here with a heart monitor wanting it so much for you. Earn my loyalty!”

So “professional” isn’t really the answer cuz it can be just as much a disease as a cure. Ya never know. I don’t think it comes down to money in this case. It comes down to making it happen in the moment — and it is frustrating “watching” when it doesn’t.

Fair nuff, you didn't argue that Japan produces inferior pitchers

I mixed up my anti-darvish people. Your argument has been that ‘hes too expensive for an unproven quality’ which is a decent argument, but hardly a stats or research based argument

"Son, Nobody is half as good as Mickey Mantle"

by ntrokel on Oct 10, 2011 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Most of my argument is about getting a proven starter and really isn’t that much AGAINST Darvish. What if he does fail? Where would that leave us having relied on a guy and then he sucks? If we get a solid 2 type, CJ or whoever, there’s a lot less risk and less probability of failure. If we did get Darvish and he sucked and we needed to go ahead and get another starter, it would be nearly impossible to pick someone up in a trade without really giving up literally the whole farm while getting raped in the deal. No thanks, give me a proven starter first and if they really feel the need to get Darvish, go ahead. I’ve stated this before…

by jetanumba2 on Oct 10, 2011 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, his stats over there are pretty nasty. That doesn’t necessarily mean success here, though.

Maybe look at scouting reports. How hard does he throw? What are his secondary pitches? Are those combinations of pitches successful in the majors?

What questions are there about him? How routined is he? Would he have to break that routine? How many innings does he have on his arm? Just because he’s 25 doesn’t meanhe doesn’t have a lot of mileage.

Also, he only pitched once a week in Japan. How will he adapt to pitching every fifth day?

Contributing writer for Pinstripe Alley.

by Frank Campagnola on Oct 10, 2011 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

the last question would have been my biggest focus

because i’m cautious about that with any Japanese pitcher. I don’t doubt that he’s good and that it will translate at least relatively well over here, but I worry about fatigue and injury and stamina. Also considering it would be a multiyear deal, so would he be healthy throughout the contract?

by jetanumba2 on Oct 10, 2011 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Do people realize

He has the most honorable SHUUTO

Which is essentially a two seamer.

Plus its also worth noting that this year he’s pitched to an ERA of 1.49 in 223 innings with 261 strikeouts.

by ntrokel on Oct 10, 2011 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably

He has a ton of pitches and varies speeds incredibly well- thats probably his biggest strength as a pitcher. And I’ve read that he’s thrown an eephus at times during his career in Japan (though very rarely).

Perhaps, but there was this, too

On August 22, Darvish was taken off the active roster for the first time in his career due to injury. The Fighters classified it as “shoulder fatigue,” and the deactivation came after a career-worst start against the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, in which he went 8 innings, but gave up 6 earned runs on 10 hits in a losing effort.

CC's gone on the DL before too

Every pitcher will get unlucky with injuries at some point. But what I do know is that Darvish has pitched 6 straight innings of at least 150 innings pitched and 4 of those innings have been over 200 innings. That says “durability” to me, and he hasn’t been abused while pitching in Japan either. And he has never had any issues with his arm, which is most important for a pitcher.

He will be great

If at this time next year I find out I was completely wrong, then I’ll eat my words and never support paying big money for someone who hasn’t pitched in the majors again. I’ll at least admit that I can be wrong in this case, and that there is risk to it.

I don’t expect to have to do that though. He’s going to be successful.

Doesn't always transition to the MLB well.

But the ERA should be low in his first year because no one will know how to hit him right away.

I say from the Japan league to the MLB give them a full earned run on their ERA. Likely see a 3.00 out of Darvish.

I'd hope for an ERA around 3.5

Which is more than good enough for a #2 starter. But I’d also know that he has the ability to perform much better than that as well.

if we’re giving him $100M+ it better be lower than that

by jetanumba2 on Oct 10, 2011 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

100+ million including the luxury tax

That doesn’t go into the payroll. The actual salary will probably be below market price and I would guess close to the amount Soriano makes except with more years.

If he were to throw 200 innings, win 15 games and have an ERA around 3.40-3.50, then I think that is more than good enough for me. Very consistent and reliable and solidifies the rotation. Thats the bar I’d set for him, but I’m sure he’s capable of MUCH better from his stuff and pitching in Japan.

by nyyrocks29 on Oct 10, 2011 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I really think his contract will be over $100M

then add the posting fee on top of that. He’s being called the best pitcher to come out of Japan in an offseason that has sparse pitching talent

by jetanumba2 on Oct 10, 2011 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

You really think he'd make that much just based on salary?

A 5 year or 6 year deal for 100+ million is huge. I can’t see him demanding that from any team. Always possible though.

somewhere around $16M a year over 6 years is possible

by jetanumba2 on Oct 10, 2011 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

An addition of 1 to his ERA would put his ERA

Somewhere from 2.5 to 2.9.

"Son, Nobody is half as good as Mickey Mantle"

by ntrokel on Oct 10, 2011 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

My position is that I'd rather the Yankees spent the money and take the risk

rather than risk another team in the division (Boston) doing so, and making us regret it. Yes, the posting fee would likely be HUGE. But, that gives the team exclusive rights to deal with the player, which has historically caused the actual contract with said player to be below market value (one reason the Japan players union wants to scrap the posting process, which they refer to as a form of slavery). So, the addition to payroll, and the luxury tax impact, would be less than with a guy like Wilson. For a young player.

I also agree that the shift from 1 start per week to once per five days is worrisome, and I don’t have an answer for that. I just figure that the Yankees are the last team that should worry about money.

Fine by me

Russ catches AJ, Montero catches everybody else. Martin would make a really good backup actually.

by nyyrocks29 on Oct 10, 2011 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Martin needs to catch at least 2-3 times/week

Part of his problem this year was that Joe gave him basically no rest. He was pretty good in April, enough to still be remembered during the All-Star voting later (lol). But Joe pitched him night and day, and he eventually wore down.

Let Montero split time between catcher and DH next season, and continue to learn the trade. His bat will be in the lineup, and the Yankees will get value out of both he and Martin, without wearing down either too much.

by waw on Oct 10, 2011 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats the best case scenario

I don’t see them stripping playing time away from Martin though. I feel the most likely case is that he starts, Montero is the primary DH and Cervelli is the backup so long as he’s healthy with Romine starting in AAA. And then we’ll see a constant repeat of this past September where Montero is never allowed to catch a game except for once every three weeks for 6 innings.
