An excerpt from a post of mine this morning.
Shields is the better pitcher, but here is an interesting stat to go with this match up. Shields had a 2.82 ERA, but was given a 4.73 run support average. While Derek Holland was given the highest run support average in all of baseball at 9.23.

Yankees win series.
Rays win
Brewers win
Phillies win.

I have a question
If Ivan Nova pitches until the 9th and closes the game out does he get credited for a Complete game?

Also, would you pitch CC game two?
I would if wining this series was my only goal. Since winning the WS is the goal I think game three would be better. If I have the days counted correctly that gets CC back on tract for the LCS.
I would have started him today
I don’t understand why he and Verlander couldn’t pitch today. Weird. Today’s pitchers are just…

It would have been nice to do that so he could still pitch twice in the series.
However, Joe said he ended up throwing about 75 pitches yesterday between warm ups and staying warm in case the rain stopped, so he’s not letting him pitch before Game 3.

Pretty pissed with the Yankees right now:
Brandon is right, why even bother starting the game?
Secondly, YS parking is now $45 instead of the regular season $35. Everyone who parked in those structures paid $45 for an inning and a half and if they park again will pay another $45 for the other 7 and a half innings tonight.
$90 to park for one game, now.

Thats why you shouldn't drive to Yankee Stadium
Well, easy for me to say since I live here, so I just take the subway. But not having to worry about parking is much more convenient.
Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!
Thing is I need to drive. Last bus home is 1:20 and with the potential for rain/extra innings, I’m not taking the chance of missing baseball.
It happened to me during game 2 of the 2009 ALCS. Had to leave in the 11th or 12th to make the bus, Yankees walked off on an error the next inning

Well thats true if you don't want to take that risk
And that has happened to me before. Usually what I do in that case is take the subway back and then get a taxi. Not as convenient as the bus, I but I feel it outweights the inconvenience of driving there.
Unless the bus is your absolute only way home and the taxi wouldn’t work, in which case you are correct.

or they could just stop starting Yankee games at the latest possible time
if we could have started earlier we could have gotten the game in. But no, the Yankees need to play at the most lucrative time, all the time. God forbid its an afternoon game.

game could have started at 5
but the Yankees NEED to play as late as possible. Its just unfair to other teams
I don't know who scheduled it that way,
but I think they must have started it later for the Tigers fans. 5 o’clock might be a good time for us here on the East coast, but for Detroit fans, it’s not. But I agree, 8pm is still too late.

Most playoff games are 8 PM
And every single World Series game is at that time as well. It’s prime time- they’ve always done it that way.
But if there’s shit weather coming and you can play the game earlier, you do it! Because it wasn’t raining here earlier in the day yesterday.
Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!
Not always that way
for decades all post season games were afternoon games. Only since the ’70s that post season games were at night.

So are you guys really going to start Jacob Turner next season?
You guys aren’t afraid he is being rushed to fast and will get “Phil Hughes’d”?
Depends on who you talk to.
He’s got a great arm and stuff. Honest to goodness top of the rotation arm. He also seems to have a really good make up. He doesn’t act or seem as young as he is.
All of that said I’d prefer he started in AAA next year and we signed a low-risk one year rental (like we did with Brad Penny this year). We only have one hole to fill in the rotation assuming we don’t resign Brad Penny (I hope not).
We already have one great arm that was rushed (in my opinion) in Rick Porcello. He has/had a lot of talent, but had been learning to pitch while in the big leagues.

We tried the Phil Coke experiment.
We might give it a try again….but he has been solid as a reliever and not great as a starter. He was okay for tlhis first couple of starts…got hurt…and then when he tried to come back he was just awful.
by playoffbeard on Oct 1, 2011 3:32 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I know what you mean.
I hope Turner can break the trend but whenever I see a twenty year old thrusted into a rotation spot I get flashbacks of Full Huse and Joba Chamberlain getting proper fucked by our front office. Porcello will only be twenty-three this year and already arbitration eligible. That’s insane.
I think Turner has better stuff than Joba does.
I can’t speak for makeup.

The White Sox also like Yankees bench coach Tony Pena, but [Dave Martinez, bench coach of TB Rays] is their No. 1 target, the second source said. Both Martinez and Pena currently are unavailable; their respective teams are in the post-season.
Williams has said he has a preferred candidate to replace Ozzie Guillen, whom the White Sox traded to the Marlins for two minor leagues. Williams said he could name a new manager before the start of the World Series.

no but we saw him suck
he was having a bad year in Houston too, he’s older. Definitely more likely to continue sucking (though not as bad). His resurgence was as unexpected as Adam Dunn’s shittieness
I don't think so.
He battled injuries last year and his “bad year” in Houston was still pretty good.
I expected him to be better
I didn’t expect this though. He’s been one of the top players in the NL this season. Nobody could have seen that coming after his shitty, injury plagued Yankees tenure.
Let us all congratulate the Boston Red Sox for becoming the first World Champions in the history of sports to NOT make the postseason! Thats not easy to do!
I thought we would still have Posada catch (call up Montero in June) and Berkman would DH.
Then the news came out that Posada wouldn’t catch anymore and we signed Russel Martin instead.
Well that's what I wanted.
Of course this was right near the beginning of free agency. I thought our winter would be really different than it ended up being.
Berkman cost STL $8 million
It was basically him or Jones, and Jones hits lefties better and was way cheaper.
by PortlandYankee on Oct 1, 2011 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Wasn't the Jones signing after Berkman went to St. Louis?
I don’t even think Cashman attempted to re-sign Lance.
Berkman actually asked the Yankees not to pick up his option as part of accepting a trade to the Bronx.

he specifically said he didn't want his option picked up
and he continually talked about NY like it was a wild animal that he was locked in a cage with. It sounded like he bought into the who New York™ for some reason
Because he was too expensive to be a platoon LF
And we already had DH filled.
The only thing we really needed this year was a couple of RH bats to platoon w. DH or LF. And you don’t want to pay that guy more than a few million.
by PortlandYankee on Oct 1, 2011 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Like I said
I didn’t think the DH position was going to be filled by Jorge until later that winter. I wanted Berkman there.
That was my guess, but I've never seen tickets for standing room.
And sometimes I see the attendance exceeding the capacity by a couple thousand, which is a lot of standing room.

Those were the only 3 runs we gave up that game. Ponson started, we lost 14-3.
Fuck the injury bug in 2008
Joba, Wang, Posada stay healthy we win the World Series. Rotation of Wang-Mussina-Joba-Pettitte would have been ridiculous.
If an error is made in foul ground, and the batter ends up scoring later on in the inning, is the run earned?
That sort of pertains to now.
Victorino foul ball was dropped which could have ended the inning. Then he drove in a run.

Just me, or is A-Rod rolling over on his swings right now?
Seems to be pulling a lot of grounders to 3B since he came back?
I've noticed that too
His swing has always been to right center with a lot of power. He had a lot of that in the first three months, but then he got hurt and seems to be too pull happy right now, which would cause him to roll over and weakly ground out. Whether it’s injuries thats affecting him or just a lack of ABs, I don’t know.
He knows how to hit and I’m sure he’s noticed too though. So hopefully he makes adjustments and just starts raking. Because while Cano is the best hitter on this team, there’s nobody on this team that can carry an offense the way A-Rod can when he gets hot.
