Monday Morning Links: Football, A-Rod, Eiland, Top 50 Yankees, Orioles Murder Suspect, And The Enemy

I'm filling in for Ed today, as he has a lot to cover over at the Giants site Big Blue View.

Alex Rodriguez has joined a fight against steroids, and is doing it secretively.

Earlier this offseason we heard that Dave Eiland had taken a job with the Rays. Marc Topkin has the details on that job. An interesting quote:

Also, sharing any secrets on how to beat his previous team, the Yankees.

"Absolutely, whatever I can give ’em to help, I can do that," Eiland said. "And I’ve got plenty of them. They’re the enemy now."

Not surprising, any player or employee would likely to do the same. Isn't that why Woodhead became a Patriot?

Nick Cafardo lists the Yankees among bargain hunters and January trade candidates.

Mike Silva puts together his top 50 Yankees of all time.

Orioles reliever Alfredo Simon is being accused of murder in Dominican Republic. Knowing the Orioles, he will win the closers job in April.

Finally, an article that you wouldn't think has to do with the Yankees, but definitely does. Elliot Johnson could win a utility job with the Rays this season. Why does that matter? Johnson is the man that launched a vicious attack on Francisco Cervelli, sparking a war that would last one hundred days and one hundred nights. (Trying to add to the drama, as this is Cervelli) Johnson broke Cervelli's wrist in Spring Training on a play at home plate. I now only refer to him as "The Enemy."

Questions of the week: If the Yankees could sign 5 current free agents, which 5 would you want them to go after? If you weren't a Yankees fan, which team would you like? Favorite non-Yankee Stadium stadium?

Oh, and A-Rod a Top 10 Yankee of all time? What a joke. I’d put him at 46, after Allie Reynolds and before George Selkirk.

Hatred?

Don’t make statements like that when you don’t know what you’re talking about. Get real. His “numbers” weren’t accrued in New York and most of those are tainted.

Maybe you dont “hate” him but you did say that you don’t “like” him, which is pretty much the same thing… Anyways, again look at the numbers he had in NY, we are not talking about what he did before. There is absolutely no way you cant put him in at least the top 15. Get real.

No, not the same thing

I don’t like him as a person. My ranking of him as a player is a lot different than what I think of him as a person. 46.

you pay far too much attention to steroids

and we’re talking about him as a Yankee, not before.

Besides, even if we were talking about his whole career, the guy is one of the best of all time. He’ll be in the top 10 baseball players EVER by the time his career is over.

A-Rod's a top 10 Yankee

He’s been with the team 7 seasons, been among the best producers in the league in every one, won 2 MVPs, and almost singlehandedly carried the Yankees to their 2009 WS title. When his career is over, he’ll likely be the All-Time HR leader, RBI leader, runs, ect. The guys the best player to play for the Yankees since Mantle. He’s a top 10 Yankee.

I'm with david on the free agent signings

If you have to scratch the bottom of the barrel for a 5th starter, might as well try our own scrubs before someone from the free agent pile.

What team would I like? That’s a tough one. I liked different non-Yankee players but never really pulled for their teams. If I had to, I guess I’d pick the White Sox.

I’ve always found the Tigers likable- a strong history, uniforms aren’t hideous, and a decent if never great team in my lifetime. I’ve always enjoyed Bless You Boys (the SBN Tigers blog), so that helps too.

I’ve been following the Nats for several years (I went to school in Maryland, so they were a natural NL team). I pulled for the Astros when Pettitte was there, and I’ll always have a soft spot for the Padres (plus Gaslamp Ball is one of my favorite places on SBN).

Orioles

Always been partial to Orioles but Angelos’ reign of terror prevented any serious run for a championship. Now it looks like Showalter might do it in spite of Angelos. Being from VA, we are force fed Oriole broadcasts. Used to feel so sorry for the really talented players on the team and listening to Jim Palmer (ex-pitcher and TV announcer) trying to come up with a new excuse for their loss each night.
There is no match for Yankee Stadium, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to pay $2500 to sit in one of those front section seats. Apparently the ticket price includes an all-you-can-eat food service. TV broadcasts resemble the Golden Corral on family night.

Eiland's secret to beating the Yankees: Starting pitchers who can shut them out.

Don’t tell anyone else, it’s a secret. Also, jam Derek Jeter, and Brett Gardner likes to run the count.

The Patriots signed Danny Woodhead for Jet secrets? It looks more like they signed him because he can play, something the Jets saw but couldn’t believe because he’s not too tall.

Silva's Top 10 is right on...after that it gets tougher to figure.

A-Rod has been with the team for 7 seasons now, won two MVPs and was arguably responsible for the 2009 title. He belongs in the Top 10, both for what he’s done and what he still has time to do in the next 7 years.

I have it:
1. Ruth
2. Mantle
3. Gehrig
4. Dimaggio
5. Jeter
6. Berra
7. Ford
8. Rivera
9. A-Rod
10. Dickey

top Yanks

I think when we talk top Yanks,,,World Series comes into play. With this in mind,,,,Andy has to be mentioned. He is a ’baller" when the “Big Show” starts,,,he elevated his game.

Phil Rizzuto also was a gamer in the post season,,,,and who can forget Reggie ??? 10 is not a deep enough list !!!

Also Mo should be ABOVE Jetes,,,,Jetes was the leader,,,but Mo was the “Machine”,,,,not just in saves either. He closed out all the wins and some were not save situations,,,,he simply shut the door. Go back over all the years in the post season and look how many times he shut the door without getting a save. I remember in the Philly series he was like a freaking MACHINE but only got 2 saves I think. Those are CLUTCH innings. The guys who came up big late in big games are the “ballers” we need to remember.

by archery john blaze on Jan 3, 2011 12:38 PM EST up reply actions

A-Rod is a top 10 easily

And may even be top 5 when his contract ends, depending on how he plays and ages.

Right now I’d have it as…

Ruth
Gehrig
Dimaggio
Mantle
Berra
Rivera
Jeter
A-Rod
Ford
Dickey

Thats my list, personally. I put Rivera above Jeter because he’s the best all time at his position, and I think he deserves to be right up there with the old legends.

If not a Yankees fan then Tigers in AL & Cardinals in NL

Three not five free agents to sign… Podsednik, Branyan, Soriano however I would rather trade for Soria if it does not include Gardner, Nova, Montero & ManBan

Favorite non Yankee stadium… San Francisco

by YANKEES FOREVER on Jan 3, 2011 11:55 AM EST reply actions

Agree about Soria

I would add Vlad Guerraro as a potential bench bat. What he lacks in taking walks, he makes up for in being a good team player.

by alouishes on Jan 3, 2011 1:03 PM EST up reply actions

available free agents

I would like to add Rafael Soriano as one of our bridges to Mo. I also would like to add Fuentes being the Red Sux are left handed heavy and having him with Logan and Feliciano would make our pen better.

For hitters??? Maybe Damon or Vlad or Thome. Thome would be dangerous @ Yankee Stadium as would Branyan. Branyan gets hurt every year and Thome is getting injury prone with age.

The main question is,,,,will Andy sign on and who can we fetch off the scrap heap to pair up with Nova and Man-ban for the 5th spot.

I think Brackman is a loss personally as far as a starter is concerned. Joba might make it as a starter if he can get on some HGH and keep his fastball @ 96mph + thru 8 innings.

Our outfield is thin in my eyes. To me I know Gardner with his reckless abandom play will get hurt,,,probably his hand again taking a beating. So we do need a 4th outfielder who can slide into full time AB’s and another big stick type like a Thames or a Vladdy.

We are veteran pitching thin. We could use someone to eat some innings without worrying about future arm issues. I don’t mean eat innings ala Javier with a 10+ era. Someone we can give a minor league contract to with incentives that will step up like Aaron Small or even Aceves.

There has to be a arm out there that can “pitch” not “throw”,,,or call Mussina out of retirement !!! lol…

by archery john blaze on Jan 3, 2011 12:31 PM EST reply actions

Where to begin…

Soriano is a type A free agent. Giving up our first round draft pick to the Rays plus giving them a supplemental pick for a relief pitcher is not a good idea. Besides that, signing relievers to multiple year contracts is not ideal. Relievers are a crapshoot, which is why Rivera is so special.

Fuentes sucks against RHB. We already have two lefties in our bullpen, don’t need three.

We will have Jorge as DH. When Jesus comes up, we’ll have him or Martin as bench players. For a bench outfielder, we will need someone who can actually play the field, which rules out Vlad.

Brackman had a great year last year, I fail to see how he is a lost cause as a starter, especially since he hasn’t even gotten a chance yet.

Finally, our outfield is thin? We were the only team in baseball that got over 3 WAR from all three of our starting outfielders.

Russell Martin is just like the Jewish Pharisees, trying to keep Jesus down.

LOL

Nobody talked about the consequences,,,just who would you like to pick up. Frankly i’m not all that opposed to losing a pick for Soriano because if he stays healthy we can get some mileage out of him,,,,IF being the operative word here. I also hear the draft next year will be a big one so picks will be valuable. This is why Kerry Wood was a blown deal by Cash. Joba can’t do what Kerry did without taking HGH or something to get his fastball back to where it was.

I think our outfield IS thin,,,,not complaining of our production from Swish,Gardy and Grandy,,,,but where is the depth ??? We don’t have Thames banging big shots this year. I have been saying right along if Montero can’t cut it as a catcher he’d make a corner outfielder. Swish comes up for contract in a year or 2 and Montero can handle right field, his arm is good enough and there isn’t alot of real estate to cover out there.

We really do need a bridge to MO pretty bad. Our pups ,,,Joba and Robertson ain’t up to speed to handle it yet..

I think Brackman will top out as a reliever, not a starter,my opinion from my years of playing baseball. He is pretty inconsistent and is so long,,,BUT Randy Johnson did it as did J.R. Richards.

I think Man-Ban will be a good pitcher if he stays healthy. Lefties are hard to come by.

So what do we do,,,trade for Soria ? Give up one of our catchers for him or give up a draft pick for Soriano ? I’d give up the pick. I like our kids.

Isn’t Jon Rauch a free agent ??? He would work too.

Truthfully we have our backs to the wall for a set up guy. We wont be anything in late games without a better set up guy.

Mid-market teams can rarely afford long contracts

You can argue that it might be their only chance of contending, and I commend them for attempting to appeal to their fanbase and at least try to win. That said, there are a hundred different ways for a contract that long to go wrong. It’s tough for them, but it’s also amazing how often they’ve chosen to repeat this process of signing overly long deals.

Of course, this being the Rockies, there have been reports of them attempting to buy out CarGo’s arbitration years for a 7 year, $70 mn type deal.

I’m just throwing this out there, so feel free to file under “general Duggan stupidity,” but am I the only one who finds it a tad silly to make these “all time great” lists? I mean, sure, it can be a fun thing to chat about, but the lists tend to always be completely arbitrary. Is Mariano Rivera better or worse than Yogi Berra? There’s really no winning that argument on either side.

With that said, Babe Ruth was really good. Like really good.

I'm with you

I guess lists are a good way of generating discussion. But someone like the Mets or Astros could have a more heated discussion on this, simply because they’ve been here for fewer years, and have a smaller pool to discuss. That would probably allow more current players to crop up.

The idiot formerly known as pkyankeefan! Now in Technicolour!

by Hasan Paliwala on Jan 3, 2011 4:47 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I agree.

Especially when there isn’t anything concrete to order the players. You can do “Greatest Yankees By Batting Average” or whatever, but when it’s just in terms of who was “great” when everyone has a different definition of that anyway, it’s rather pointless.

People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Jan 3, 2011 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

That could actually get really interesting

Best plate discipline could be a fun list to see. Or maybe some sort of reverse lists with worst OBP (maybe qualified by era), worst pitcher seasons, or qualifying seasons with players under the Mendoza line. Much fewer people know about them, and it could be enjoyable.

If I wasn't a Yankees fan?

Thats tough. Probably the Mariners because I liked Ken Griffey Jr. growing up.

I love Camden Yards- just a great park. It’s definitely my favorite non-YS Stadium.

The top 50 list is pretty good. I wouldn’t have Giambi on that list because he wasn’t consistent enough as a Yankee. He had one season worth his pay, and one huge postseason game. I mean, when healthy he was a great bat, but it wasn’t for long enough or consistent enough. I’d put Mike Mussina higher on the list because of his steady consistent pitching and big postseason games that he pitched in. The top 10 is pretty good though. I’d shift the order a little but it’s not bad. A-Rod is definitely a top 10 Yankee and may even be a Top 5 Yankee by the time his career ends in terms of numbers.

Me too

I live in DC and root for the Nats kind of passively too. As long as they can play spoiler for a few games over the Phillies and Mets I’m happy. $5 day of game tickets are nice.

I’ll tell you who I don’t like outside of our division—the Cubs. The fans and the history are just too similar to the Red Sox for me. Plus, I got a really bad sunburn in the left field bleachers at Wrigley :( sad face

I would

root for teh Cardinals
always liked the way they played and seem like a good organization
it would be great to watch pujols every day, and im a big fan of wainwright and holliday

i think wainwright is pretty underrated , people dont realize that he is THAT good

best stadium i think is Safeco, ive been there and its very clean and a beautiful ballpark
