Bartolo Colon Signs Minor League Deal With New York Yankees
Bartolo Colon signed with the Yankees today, a minor league deal worth $900,000 if he makes the big league club out of spring training.
The 2005 Cy Young Award winner can become a free agent if he does not make the team, and will compete for the fifth starter job.
Colon has not made twenty starts in a season since 2005, and last pitched in the majors in 2009 for the Chicago White Sox.
The former Indians, Expos, White Sox, Angels, and Red Sox pitcher is 153-103 career with a 4.10 ERA. It is another low risk and probably low reward move for the Yankees, who are still looking for a fifth starter in case Andy Pettitte does not return.

All I know is right now our AAA team is pretty awesome
It’s too bad I’m a Buffalo Bisons fan and ever since the Mets took over they have ruined that team.
I doubt it comes down to the poll, but I am very surprised that there are people that want to just give the job to Colon just so that Mitre doesn’t get it.

What’s so shocking about no one wanting Mitre to start ballgames? It has nothing to do with Colon’s name.

Tony Pena
managed Colon’s winter ball team this past off-season so I’m sure he had to have some input to this signing. There’s still a bit of life in his arm as he pitched pretty decently. I put him as the front-runner over the rookies to win the fifth spot if the Yankees don’t sign or trade for another pitcher. And then a DFA in late-May/June if he falls flat.
More importantly
New images of the Thundercats reboot were released yesterday. I’m very excited about this.
As for the Colon signing……eh

well from my memory we used to be one of the teams that always thrashed colon when he was good, maybe he signed with us for precisely that reason
i would definitely rather see him than mitre, at least he has a cy in his repertoire, mitre has nothing but misery
it’s an interesting signing to say the least, the yankees are playing a pitching lottery and buying as many tickets as they can
still no guarantees we win anything though…

Like the deal
Much, MUCH better than Mitre. It’ll be interesting to see how he does in spring.

he is not much much better than Mitre
last two years their FIP’s are identical, with Colon striking out more guys but Mitre getting a ton more ground balls and walking people less
and with Mitre being almost a decade younger i expect that he would end up outperforming Colon this year
which is not saying much but still
SNIVELING HU-MAHNS!!

At least Colon has had some sort of success in his career
And i honestly hate Sergio Mitre as a pitcher, so I’d take just about anyone over him.

I don't hate Mitre
I just think there are many other young talented pitchers in our organization that deserve a shot over him

Colonic
Unless Colonic is in the best shape of his life,he will be out of gas by June…pun intended.
Question?????????
If you combine two 40 year old former starters, two junk ballers and one one rehab project…Will that equal one quality pitcher for a season.
are we combining their numbers
or are we attempting a strange science experiment. Only one will equal a quality pitcher.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
I could go for the science experience
PriColMitre might be replacement level.

may be a moot point
A lot of Twitter rumors today indicating that Pettitte might actually be coming back. Here’s one such story. If Colon winds up beating out Mitre, that’s fine by me. If he takes innings away from Nova or another young starter, and he’s not approaching 2005 levels of production, I’m going to whack Cashman in the testes with a sack full of rocks.
Oh, and yes, I’m tired of Twitter rumors about Pettitte. Not putting him in Favre’s territory yet, of course, but just make up your mind and get it over with, please.

Pettitte won’t reach Favre territory until he starts texting pics of his R.A. Dickey to people

I heard in a rumor
that they were offering Pettitte $12 Million, Excalibur, a brand new Verizon iPhone 4, and some of our Nachos.

I think Pettitte makes this a moot point, but I voted for Mitre.
Colon is a ghastly horrific crime scene at this point.
I didn't realize that Colon was that old.
I remember when he was a rookie. Anyway, if there is any life left in that arm, I’d take him over both Mitre and Nova.
Can Pedro be far behind?
In all seriousness I dont mind this signing. Its low risk and just adds some depth. Supposedly Colon lost like 40 pounds so maybe he can add something to this staff.
Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.
And by something you mean 300 pounds, right?
People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.

If he gets hungry and eats Meat-Tray, Id be fine with it,lol
Depth is always good to have. Its not like our starters havent had health issues in the past. Perhaps he will have a great spring, if not, Kei Igawa has a large number 2 behind him in SWB.

Eating the Meat Tray would make him worth every penny.

Neither
but if I had to pick one of the two, Colon, since they both will prove to be worthless to the team at least he’d bring some humor to the table. Throw Prior in there and maybe each one can pitch a third of the season before being demoted to the pen.
Colonoscopy
Yah, him and CC definetly will be destroying BBQ joints around the country. What the hell were the Indians feeding these guys back in the day? Guys pretty much borderline non-roster invitee. Who knows, maybe he will pan out or at the very least get a job on the food network nation.,
Using nine closers to pitch every game, tyranical brothers running the guns, signing every scrapheap player to run around the diamond, what you call The Bronx Zoo, I CALL HOME!!!!

The fact that Sergio Mitre could be starting this year...
Truly is a shame.
March 31st can't come soon enough.
Bullpen Help Needed
Yanks got 6 short reliever’s in the pen, and the way Girardi uses them and rests them there will be days when the #7 reliever/mop up guy has to pitch for a while. Don’t want to use anyone of value for that spot(Nova, Killer B’s). Some big, fat nearly washed up guy trying to resurrect his career is perfect for the role. Hey, you never know, he might actually get hitters out…all you need is $900,000 and a dream.
I had a nightmare in which Cashman said none of the young arms were ready, and it was a pitch-off between Colon, Mitre, and Igawa.
My wife asked why I woke up screaming and the cat ran away.
by designatedquitter on Jan 27, 2011 11:15 AM EST reply actions
That would be a nightmare BUT I am sure Cash has a deal in the works to be our #4 starter at the start of the regular season
I have heard rumors Mark Buehrle might be made available by the WSox for the right deal
The WSox need a closer and maybe we could explore trading Soriano and low level minor league player(s) for Buehrle???
I like Soriano but if we had a chance to get Buehrle, I would certainly look into it.
by YANKEES FOREVER on Jan 27, 2011 1:10 PM EST up reply actions
We just signed Soriano
I’d say the chance he’s dealt before he makes one pitch for is hovers around 0%.
