Is the end of the Cashman era coming?

The rules in corporate life are pretty simple.  You pitch your ideas as hard as you can, to try to get them implemented.  If your boss (or a group) over rules you, you get in line and support the organization's decision.  You say "we" in refering to it.  You never come out and say, as Cash just did, "I didn't support it"  and air the issue again.

Cashman's statements at Soriano's press conference were surprising to me.  They were a huge breach of corproate manners.  I believe it is showing a serious breach with his bosses.  This brings two main ideas.  First, Cash is on a 3 year contract ending with 2011 (Cot's), will he leave at the end of this contract?  Second, Could he possibly be hoping for a wave of fan support?

I think he's done..

When he re-signed last time, his number one thing was that baseball decisions were his. He knows more about the game than Hank, Hal or George ever did or will.

Cashman is a smart man, I know a lot of people don’t like him, but he’s very good. He has a lot of money to spend and does a pretty good job with it. But I think the Soriano deal is both good and bad. Good for the present and bad for the future. But then again, all the Yankees care about is the present because they can always spend their way out of future troubles.

I think Cash walks at the end of the season.

Let's cut through the crap, Vaughn. I only got one thing to say to you: "Strike this mother f*cker out."

Do you think he'll get to the end of the season?

What would you want to see in a replacement?

the only way he doesn't get to the end of the season

is if he quits.

I honestly can’t think of anything he’s really done that someone else could do better in the same position and conditions. Anyone that takes the GM job is going to be subject to the whims and decisions of the Steinbrenners. It’s part of the job.

Ask any GM that worked for Peter Angelos (or any Orioles fan what any of their former GMs really could have done better).

Some teams, I imagine, are hard to work for, and sometimes frustrating for fans, when ownership makes too many decisions instead of letting those with the proper baseball knowledge (GM) make decisions, especially as it pertains to on-the-field matters.

Also, I think you overstate the simplicity of the corporate structure. Yes, part of anyone’s role in a corporate organization is to follow orders, but each individual is allowed to have opinions. In a job as public as being a baseball GM, it’s certainly within his perogative to state that it was a decision that was out of his hands. The fact that it’s public knowledge that he re-signed as the GM on the condition that he had more control over baseball matters is why he’s telling people “Hey, I didn’t make this decision.” The fact that he also shared that he didn’t agree with it was pretty in line with his previous announcement that he didn’t want to give up a first round draft pick for any relievers. So, obviously, he either lied to the press about that or was overruled when the decision to sign Soriano was made.

I think

That every firm where I worked at a high level, that kind of open dissent on a major decision would have lead to dismissal.

I think Cashman’s comments could be seen as disloyal.

Cashman had already gone on the record frequently and vehemently that he was opposed to signing a Type A free agent like Soriano.
That has to be explained, and perhaps he would look to be in a weaker position if he had been forced to offer a half-assed ‘I expressed my opinion, but we reached this decision’ statement.
The followup questions then are all, “who let the push for Soriano” “do you feel your voice is less respected by Hank & Hal” etc etc etc.
He answered it firmly, honestly and succinctly. It’s the Yanks best chance to move on.

He could/should have said

“I meant it when I said it, but this opportunity developed and we decided to go with it.” Then when pressed he should have said “It was a group decision and I support it. That’s all I have to say.”

Being the chief spokesperson for the franchise, I have no issues with Cashman sticking to his guns.
Backtreading will only lead to the media scrutiny and second-guessing any future public statements he’ll make.

Cashman has more understanding and knowledge about baseball in his little finger than the people who overruled him. I hope he takes them to the cleaners and they learn to sign the checks and let the baseball people do the baseball things.

I think he'll leave eventually...

He won’t be fired. Still, at some point I think he’ll get tired of being painted with the “He only does well because of the money” label and he’ll look to go somewhere to try and disprove it.

I think he felt a loyalty to George Steinbrenner, being the Smithers to George’s Mr. Burns and all, but I doubt he feels the same way about Hank and Hal.

I go back and forth on whether or not I think Cashman’s a good GM. A lot of the bad moves the Yankees made over the past decade weren’t his call (Sheffield, RJ, Lofton, Wright, etc.) but a lot were (Igawa, Nick Johnson, Vazquez, the handling of Joba). As we learned this winter there’s more to signing free agents than just throwing gobs of money at them, and Cashman’s been incredibly successful at getting guys to want to play here. He’s made a few good buy-low trades, most notably Nick Swisher, and he’s done a good job of holding on to the few Yankee prospects who have been worth holding onto.

Overall I don’t think Cashman’s brilliant by any stretch but we could do a lot worse.

Levine

Levine is about as back biting as any “corporate” employee can be. He always in my eyes was a “meddler” and always will do as much as he can to suck asses with the boys Hal and Hank. Levine is a “corporate suck ass”. He will try to always take his shots with any of the employees in order to make himself look the better with the “boys”. He was running the bus over Cash in this deal.

Do I think Cash was off on this one ??? YES !!! I think Cash should have renewed Kerry Wood for the 11-12 million to solidify the 8th inning. Since he didn’t do that,he should have looked for ways to solidify the 8th inning which he did NOT.

You cannot have a $200,000,000 team and not have a solid back end of the bull pen. He also has slept his way thru some guys who could have worked out for us as back end short term starters. Guys such as Francis a lefty who could cause problems for the Red Sux left handed dominate line up. He didn’t even bring us much in the way of “scrap heap” arms with the exception of Prior.
So in my book Cashmans offseason was real bad,,,slept too much. I mean just how important was the Martin signing ??? We had a young masher coming up in Montero,Posada can catch a few games and Cervelli can too. Martin is 1 plate collision away from being a Pavano signing..

Cash is a good dude and a good GM who has the family’s best interest @ hand all the time. He is a straight shooter and thats why he has a hard time with Boras and I know it was Boras who went OVER Cash’ head in the Soriano deal.

You gotta figure there is some value to having a bonifide closer as your 8th inning man at any price. If Soriano stays healthy and there comes a need for a closer in the market,Boras the money whore will opt him out. So no harm done. If Soriano gets hurt,no opt out and we suffer with his Pavano like contract.

It’s a crap shoot like it is with all arms.

Cash

is a good but not great GM. He is better than many of the other GMs in the league and certainly better than the people who are overruling him.
I view his speech as preparation for departure. He had to fight hard, when George was alive, to wrest control of personnel decisions away from the Tampa crowd. I can’t see him wanting to fight that fight all over again.
The owners of the team, the Steinbrenners, can of course spend what they want to spend and sign who they want to sign, but they don’t need Cashman to do it. They have publicly embarrassed him by going over his head to do something he said he wouldn’t do. He is in an untenable position. They are unlikely to promise him non-interference in the future (and even if they did, it wouldn’t mean much), so I expect that he will work to the end of his contract and then leave.

Cashman will probably leave on his own

its obvious that over the course of his career he’s really never had full control. A whole lot of the moves that are made, and I’d say 95% of the dumb ones are more so a case of him getting overruled by the Steins.

If I was Cash I’d try and find a job with another team and show that I wasn’t a product of the money.

They’ll probably hire a GM from within and he’ll be their lapdog

Cashman walking and the Steinbrenners hiring a Yes-man to do their bidding is literally a nightmare scenario for the future of this franchise. And that’s not to say that Cashman is a terrific GM (I think he’s very good), but a choice between him making the baseball decisions vs. Hank, Hal, and Levine is no choice at all.

by Lord Duggan on Jan 20, 2011 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

Hiring a “yes-man” would spell doom for the Yanks. Hal and Hank aren’t all that knowledgeable about baseball. They play the same games we do. “The Yanks should go get Player X.” But the difference between us and them is that they have the ability to go get him. If they think, because of media interference, that a player is so good they’ll go get him without thinking.

Cashman has been good about getting in the way of it. But now they stepped on his toes with the Soriano deal. I think he’s sick of it. If they get someone to go and do as they please, this team will be toward the bottom of the AL East.

My argument is basically that they’re not as baseball-savvy as Cashman. They can dole out the money, but Cashman should spend it how he sees fit. End of story—but they’re gonna make him quit.

I think Cashman leaves, given that his press conference comments implied as much.

I could see him go to the Mets, lol. That would be epic. Or he’ll settle for a semi-small market team. Hopefully, that person that replaces him does a good job or better.

by E-ROC on Jan 20, 2011 10:09 PM EST reply actions

the Mets just got one of the most respected GM's in the league

He’s not going there.

I hope he stays- he’s better than anyone the Yanks are gonna find if he chooses to walk.

Oh Hell Yeah!!! Cashman 316 says I just traded for Javy again.

The Yankees have a 40 year history of GM- trampling in the Steinbrenner era.

Anyone they hire can really expect to see his carefully- laid strategy crushed like a snd castle by the beach bully under familias Steinbrenner. Hal looks and carries on just like his dad.
