More New York Yankees Notes: Aceves, Arbitration, Jones, Galarraga, Papelbon, and Soriano
Here are some bonus notes for the day!
- There has been little to no activity with Alfredo Aceves lately. I hope to hear something soon, as he would be a good candidate that people have seemed to forget about for the 5th starter spot.
- Read this fanpost by YanksVikes for the news of the Yankees agreeing to deals with Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, and Boone Logan. Logan is another player that has been relatively forgotten this offseason.
- The Yankees are getting closer and closer to signing Andruw Jones, and it seems mroe and more like Johnny Damon will sign with the Rays or Angels.
- How about Armando Galarraga for the 4th or 5th starter spot? He was designated for assignment by the Tigers today, and whether it is a straight waiver pickup, or a trade, he would be better than Mitre.
- Jon Papelbon will be paid $12 million this year. Let's take a collective laugh here at Pinstripe Alley.
- Rafael Soriano will take his physical today and the Yankees hope to announce the deal tomorrow.

So
Since arbitration is over, what if Cash now says, “all right, I’ve changed my mind, Joba’s a starter”?
Joba’s head would explode.

maybe
But if he pitches the way we think he should pitch (I saw someone on twitter earlier today say Joba is projected to have an ERA of about 4.2 as a starter, with the other internal options right now hovering around 5), he’ll make plenty of money in arbitration next year.

Armando Galarraga
He managed to give up 21 homers in 144 innings…pitching his home games at Comerica. That’s a pretty scary thought.
He does fall into the “anyone but Mitre” category along with just about anyone with a right or left arm and most pitching machines.

I don't get
how the Yanks could potentially give a rotation spot to Mitre or Galarraga over someone they already have: Joba. As a starter, the dude’s got a 4.18 ERA over 222 ip. Compared to the 2010 rotation, he would’ve been at worst the third best SP behind CC and Hughes.
FYI, Galarraga is nothing more than an average at best SP. Look at his K and K/BB rate in a pitcher’s park.
I hate to agree
but if he is the last option other than Mitre than he should step up and take that starter position.
But I cringe when he starts games and just throws wild fastballs dead center belt high.
Cringe I tell ya, cringe.

I thought Armando signed with the Tigers already?

yeah it's weird
Why sign him, then DFA him?
by long time listener on Jan 18, 2011 4:21 PM EST up reply actions
I could see them feeling him out to see what he wanted
Then deciding it was too much and cutting ties. But I don’t see why they’d agree to a number and then DFA. Maybe there’s some kind of technical reason for it, like they needed to keep the roster at 40 and couldn’t reach an agreement with someone else for a couple of days. (I believe they just signed Brad Penny, so maybe they were holding the roster spot for him.) Still, it’s weird.

haha
I’d do that two or three times a month. Any time I was feeling down I’d call his agent and get him back, only to cut him again.

Probably so if he clears waivers they can still control him in AAA. Not sure, just a guess.

Fenway is a shithole
There not gonna have one there anytime soon. Havent you noticed that the AS games have been held at nicer and newer stadiums.

The only reason the Yanks got the game in 08 was because the stadium was coming down. Before that they didnt host since the 70’s. Boston doesnt need the revenue and they dont deserve the game again so soon.

I don't see how he "gets it"
I mean, I’d be pumped about that if I was a Royals fan, since that $12 million (I’m pretty sure that was his salary) is going to come in handy. Still, he had a contract, and the Royals took the risk that he wouldn’t be good enough to justify his salary in 2011. No one put a gun to their heads. So Meche would have been completely within his rights to take the money he was owed. Maybe he wants to coach and hopes to start things off by doing the franchise a huge favor. But don’t expect the Royals to forego any revenue-sharing money they’re entitled to if they have a better-than-expected season, so I don’t see why Meche is necessarily a hero for giving up money the Royals freely agreed to pay him.
by long time listener on Jan 18, 2011 4:31 PM EST up reply actions
+1
And if Meche’s family is ever in need of money (he made something like $50MM in his playing career, but weirder things have happened), they’re going to think a lot less of his heroism. I’m waiting for the day that the Yankees can tell Kei Igawa that he has “done enough” for us, and so we’re not going to continue paying him.
If he is so financially solvent that he wants to give the Royals a $12MM gift, that’s his prerogative, but I wouldn’t expect many others to do that, nor do I find it to be “role model” behavior.
Great for the Owners
They sure won’’t be putting that money back into the team . It is a disgrace in my opinion for a MLB team to have a payroll under 75 million. KC payroll will be in the 40 million dollar range this year. Pathetic and not fair to any fan expecting to buy season tickets. Than people will say KC does not support there team. Completely wrong. The owner in my mind does not deserve the All—Star Game. It will be the most attended game all year by far. Also if they trade Soria, they truly have no all star on the team for the game. That is a joke!
by Kansas Yankee on Jan 18, 2011 8:57 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I think of it more as an opinion than a fact. I saw he said he has made more than enough money and didn’t play up to his contract and not many athletes admit that. I’m not meaning to force that onto anyone but I feel that was a move he didn’t have to make and made out of thanks to the organization. I’m a sucker for someone giving back, but that’s just me.

but how often do the owners give something back?
If a guy outperforms his contract, do they throw in a bonus? Did they Yankees give Mike Mussina a little extra for having a great 2008? The owners don’t kick in extra unless they have to, so I don’t see why a player should.

The whole thing is so ridiculous. Who gives a crap if Aaron Rodgers is nice to people with cancer?
The only reason any of us know who he is is because he can throw a football well. He’s not the President, or a famous philanthropist, or the ambassador to Iran, he’s a quarterback.
It has nothing to do with who he is

Rodgers has received much more vitriol than this situation warranted. I have no doubt that there isn’t a day that goes by where an everyday person (accidentally or deliberately) doesn’t give a minor slight to a victim of cancer.
And while that type of behavior isn’t celebrated, it’s certainly not news worthy either.
The whole thing is spawned from our society’s ridiculous assertion that athletes and celebrities should be role models, despite the overwhelming evidence that it’s never going to happen.
Its a world where the media builds a person up

What’s that got to do with anything? I’m not saying the Packers are or aren’t good, or that he does or doesn’t have a good enough team to win.
What I’m saying is that Aaron Rodgers’ play determines his individual quality as a player, not his team being able or unable to win the Super Bowl.
The idea that he isn’t good until he wins is stupid, but so is the idea that if he does win, he’ll all of a sudden be way better.
I agree with what you say to a point
Even if he doesnt win the SB, he is an elite QB, no doubt. But in football, without a decent QB, you are pretty much dead in the water. Just take a look at the Arizona Cards with and without Warner.

I agree that it’s very important to the team, but Trent Dilfer being a super bowl winning QB and Dan Marino not being one makes me hesitant to completely agree.
Dilfer is not the norm if you look at SB history
I do agree that QBs get way too much credit though. I mean put Brady, Manning, and Montana behind awful O-Lines, I guarantee they look very ordinary. The lines never get enough credit.
With that said, I hope my crappy QB, who is lucky to be behind a great line, goes all the way. Im sure he would replace Dilfer as the worst SB winning QB of all time.

Because it does not benefit you with you already having a closer. The Papelbon deal is bad too, but he is their only closer, for now. I still think Bard should be, but whatever.

Forget Gallaraga, Let Joba have another shot as a SP if a suitable veteran pitcher is not available.
If we are going to go with youngsters at the backend of the rotation at least for the first half of the season then let Joba compete against Mitre in ST for the spot.
Mitre should have been DFA a long time ago but I guess we need someone for mop up duty. I am confident Joba could beat Mitre in ST.
Leaving Joba for middle relief is a waste of his talent potential so why not give him one final shot as a starter. Joba without “the rules” may just turn his career around as a backend starter in 2011
