Joba?

Where does the Soriano deal leave Joba?  I think he is going to be looked at as a starter.  What is the risk in that at this point?  It is a much better option than trading him.  Joba should be a serviceable 5th starter.  Even a 4.50 ERA gets him 8 wins.  And what happens if he perform half-way decent?  The guy has good stuff, has been jerked around more than enough by the Yankees and deserves a fair shot at the 5th slot.  No pitch count.  Go out there at take it Joba.

He's not starting

Not for the Yankees anyways. He should be, but I think there’s a bigger chance that he gets traded than he starts.

However, I’m not putting full confidence into anything Cashman says. He said 2 days ago he’s not getting Soriano, and then the Yankees sign him. You never know. He may end up in the rotation after all (but I doubt it).

Jaba is

Either the 3rd or 4th righty in the pen…or…Competing with Nova, Brackman and Sergio for a 4th or 5th starter roll. I’m all for having a strong pen much to teh shagrin of many posters, but the 4th option? No reason not to audition for the starter roll, get some work and some innings and go back to teh pen if he can’t hold down a #3 or #4 role.

The pen vs. the starters: Did you know, over the last 16 years in post-season play, the Yankees are 49-1 protecting a late inning lead during the 5 years they’ve been champs (blowing a lead to Philly but still wiinning and also blowing a game to LAA in ‘09). During the 10 series’ the Yanks have lost, they are 16-9 protecting late inning runs, blowing 2 other leads yet still winning the game. blow the lead, lose the series, hold the lead, win the prize. TO TEH PEN!!!!!!

We won the world series with Joba starting. I wish they would let him “compete” in spring training this year.

Joba didn’t start in the postseason that year

Cashman

Says the things he says for his own reasons.

Saying he wouldn’t lose a draft pick to sign a FA was part of the Soriano negotiation.

Saying Joba would stay in the pen may be understood several ways. It could be Joba in the pen was his thinking then. Missing Lee and getting Soriano might have changed that equation.

Cashman might be misdirecting. I don’t see what he might have up his sleeve

Cashman might be avoiding controversy (unlikely but possible)

Cashman might be protecting Joba. In this way Joba can throw in spring training and have 1/2 of the training getting on the mound and building up to 2 or 3 innings at a time, without the spotlight of a competition. If Joba is doing well, and Nova and Mitre are not, the Yanks will be able to backtr4ack and have time to get Joba ready to start. The problem with this is Verducci rules.

Joba is still young enough to be covered by the Verducci rules. Joba pitched 71 innings last year. I do not think the Yanks will let him pitch much more than 100 innings this year. I do not see how he can be a starter.

So, I do not think Joba can start until he’s old enough to not be covered. Would that be next year or the year after. If the Yanks let Joba start, it means they no longer care about him enough to protect him.

BTW, how many innings do you think they’ll let Nova pitch?

I read the Soriano signing was the Steinbrenners.

Cash did not want to give up his pick

You might be right

I’m not a Joba “booster club member”. I wish we would trade him. But the fact that the Soriano trade was not a unaminous decision might be along the same divided line that Joba should start or relieve. Cashman might have wanted to keep Joba in the pen and not sign Soriano, while the Steinbrenners might have wanted to sign Soriano so they could make Joba a starter again. We might also see Joba starting only to build his resume for trade bait in June.

Pitching is both a mental and a physical activity

Joba has not shown he can perform up to his talent.

I would like to see him tried again as a starter in spring training. After all, there is a big upside and little or no down side.

All that said, he is not equal to Hughes at this point. Saying he’s equivalent to Highes is ignoring the fact that he’s fallen way behind in development.
