Carlos Beltran and or Johan Santanna anyone?
Mets seem to be in a rebuilding mode and a salary dump. Obvious, too many on this team that have very large salaries for a team that has so many needs.
Their needs seem to be many. Stating pitching, second basemen and a catcher. They do have a couple of interesting players that would be great additions to their cross town rivals. With Carlos Beltran in the last year of his contract it would be the time for them to move him. Then we have Johan Santana who realistically will not be available till around June or July of 2011.
Beltran is probable the first one to go. He should now be fully recovered from his knee surgery. He is a switch hitter who plays above average defense, always around a .280 batting average, good power (25 or more home runs a year) and swipes around 25 bases a year. He has always been a five tool player. Has show ability to rise to the occasion, just look what he did for the Astros during their last run at a world series championship. Will make over 19 million this year.
Johan Santanna has always been consider one of the best south paws in the big leagues. Has won a Cy Young and has maintain an ERA of .310 for his entire career. He can be dominating. He is due over 20 million in 2011 and his contract runs thru 2014. The risk here is how will he recover from recent shoulder surgery.
So what would it take to get either of these guys in Pinstripes for next year. The Yankees actually match up quite well, in regards to a trade for either of these guys. The Yankees minor league strengths are exactly what the Mets need the most. Mets would be in heaven to remove over 19 million from their payroll.
To land Beltran it would take at least a top catching prospect, second basemen and a top pitching prospect. Now Santanna would the hardest to land. He most likely would command a couple of prized pitching prospects, second basement and a top catching prospect. But, Mets should be willing to pay a portion of his 2011 salary.
What would it take to land either of these guys? Any opinions?

Too much $$$ for neither

Food for thought
If Curtis Granderson was traded for Beltran then only about 10 million would be paid by Yankeees and would help to solve the heavy left handed outfield Yankees have. Then the Yankees are more open for another left handed outfielder (Johnny Damon, etc.). If a Johan Santana returns to form then he is much better or at least and equal to Cliff Lee. If you remember the stumbling block for a trade for Sanatana was none other than Phil Hughes. Another point here is that if or when Andy Petite retires then you have your left handed replacement.
Damon? Really?
No.

So we're getting rid of the affordable 29 year old CF
For a34 year old making 20+ million who hasn’t played a full season in two years AND Johnny Damon. Why are the Yankees trying to get older and more expensive?
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
ahaha wtf
If Grandy plays like he did in the second half, he’s already better than Beltran. No reason to trade him. Damon will just clog up roster space, and there is no guarantee Santana can return to Cy Young for.

no need for Beltran at all.
I’d be open to Santana but he just had surgery and he might not come back till midseason in 2011

Beltran wouldnt cost much at all
The Mets were pretty much ready to give him to the Red Sox. If the Yankees could pick up Soria for Gardner and some lesser prospect and they could acquire Beltran to play left for some lesser prospect and pick up half the contract, wouldnt be the worst thing. With that said, it wont happen so meh. Happy New Years everybody!!!
Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.
Stop trying to trade Gardner and Grandy
However, I might be tempted to take a chance on Santana. I think he’s the same age as Lee. He’s a proven winner. So salary wise, the Yanks would save about $3M/season over what they offered Lee. Heck, I might even be willing to give the Mets Joba in a deal for him.
Of course,
it would never happen. But that would be the easiest/best trade the Yankees could ever make.
There's always next year
Alex would never approve it
"I'll do whatever it takes to win games, whether it's sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game-winning shot."- Kobe Bryant
If the Mets would trade Santana I'd take him
but only for a non Montero catcher, one of our young utility guys to be a secondbaseman and some pitching prospects (two to include Nova or any our AAA guys)
"I’m never really surprised, but I am thrilled sometimes." Joe G. 2010
Thats a little much
but either way, A-Rod ain’t going anywhere, ever. The guy loves being a Yankee, Yankees fans are the only ones who like him, and he has a full no trade clause. Besides, The Steinbrenner’s are never going to give up the chance to get all the revenue when Alex chases the HR record. And I’m sure they want the all time HR leader to be a Yankee.

Considering that Santana is out until at least July and there is no telling
what he’ll be like when he returns, acquiring him won’t do much at least for this coming season. I certainly would not be in favor of giving up anyone the Yankees would need this season since it is questionable if Santana can help at all.
As or Beltran, since they were not interested in signing Crawford for just money, why would they trade valuable personnel for Beltran? Makes no sese.
Beltran is more a DH type @ this point in his career.
We have enough DH types already.
Figure Posada, Rodriguez,Jeter, Montero,Cano,
Texeira will all spend some time as a DHer this season.
Thames could still be signed as a cheap DH
If Nunez plays well this season, Jetter will see some DH.
Cano isn't a DH type
He’s a durable young All-Star second baseman with terrific defense.

Please come back Andy!
When was the last Yankees/Mets trade?
I’m not basing this on fact, but I feel like these are two teams that aren’t inclined to play nice.

I don’t think there’s been one since…
There's always next year
Santana
Santana will NEVER be the same. Shoulder surgeries are not like elbow surgeries. Shoulders take a toll which usually translates to loss of speed off the fastball from which all other pitches work off from. Without a decent fastball,,,Santana is harmless with his dominant pitch,,,,,the change up.
To give up a top flite pitching, catching and second baseman prospect would be like giving away the keys to a mansion !!! Santana ain’t worth that right now.
Neither is Beltran. Beltran won’t be such a great centerfielder anymore,,,,nor will he be a threat on the bases or steal 25+ bags. His wheels are hurt,,,and knees are like shoulders,,,,they don’t come back together without losing some juice. Beltran is a corner outfielder on most teams right now.
I would LOVE to have the Santana of old,,,but I doubt we’ll ever see that dude again. He might be serviceable for 180 or so innings,,,but in the AL East,,,that means a 4.50+ ERA too. I don’t think Santana will come back close to where he was,,,,,he used to have a 95-96 mph fastball. When he lost the umpth off his fastball the Yanks lit his ass on fire ,,,,remember that nite ??? I do. I watched him throw 89 mph fastballs and 85 mph change ups which both got drilled. I actually felt sorry for him being he was such a prideful star. He wasn’t the same since then,,,and then he blew his arm out trying to regain his form he lost. He needs to reinvent himself like how Mussina did and Pettite did,,,and Frank Tanana did years ago and learn better how to “pitch” then throw. CC did it,,,and AJ needs to learn how to also be a pitcher not a thrower.
I’d take Santana straight up for middling prospects only,,,none of our A or even B blue chippers until he proves he can adjust.

It’s not that drastic. Santana never threw 96-97. His best average velocity over a year was 93 back in 2006, and it’s 89 now. However, the speed of his slider and changeup have likewise decreased by about the same amount, so the relative speed differences are the same. The problem is not his fastball, which is still a plus pitch, it’s that his changeup, while still a plus pitch as well, is no longer the best change in the game. His slider also got hit in 2008 and 2009, but it was slightly positive in 2010.

I just happen to have a second BASEMENT
I will gladly trade it to the Mets for Yohan. Man that is fun to say YOHANNNN
I love a disaster you ravenous bastard. Been to 3 state fairs and watched 2 buzzards f$$k but just now have I seen it all.
