i go to a hard school, and pretty much 90% cheat here. I try not to judge and I’ve done a pretty good job of it. I personally don’t do it. It’s just annoying as hell considering I have a lower average than a lotta em b..c of it., oh well,

What really annoys me is the vast majority of them would still get excellent grades even if they didn’t cheat. But the whole “one B and you’re not going to MIT” thing really freaks people out so they get desperate.
I guess part of it is that my MIT aspirations died like 5 years ago and I have my head set of UMD, which shouldn’t be too difficult with my current SAT scores and AP

I have friends who have perfect 4.0's...some who got it by cheating, some who got it because they work hard and are smart
The ones who got it by cheating wouldn’t be too far off if they didn’t. Still it’s what I have and I’ll take it. It’s mostly due to the class difficulty that people’s grades are lower here and b/c UMD gets a lot of people from this school they know that the GPA’s would be higher in other schools. I’m hoping that will lead to my average not mattering much.

Hah, I was big on letting my friends cheat off of me, I never really needed to cheat myself. But that was mainly a helping friends > arbitrary rules type thing for me.
I don’t agree with the general rules and running of the establishment of public schools, so I really have no issue breaking their rules to help my buddies. But maybe that’s just my anti-establishment bias coming out again.

But that was absolute grading. When it came to percentiles and class ranking, I just realized it was terribly unfair. So I stopped.
I remember this Chem exam where I gave my friend my calculator to share, with the entire exam’s answes typed in it. MCQs, of course. Can’t say I’m too proud of it now.

I’ve done similar things, and in like VERY important exams.
My general thing is this: school, especially where i was, did such a poor job of evaluating and preparing you, that I just didn’t care at all or feel bad about circumventing their system. It’s a bad system made by bureaucrats that have absolutely no idea what’s really going on, and I put no concern whatsoever into honoring that system.
So, yeah, like I said, I do tend to lean towards anti-establishment in some cases, and the massive fail that is public schooling tended to bring that out in me.

the worst case of this for me was after this one precalculus exam
one question related to the range of inverse tangent. The same teacher who stressed memorizing which functions are zero to pi and -pi/2 to pi/2 made a mistake. He thought inverse tan was 0 to pi, he admitted his mistake afterwards and flat out said he refused to fix grades.

I understand where you're coming from
But consider this. My roomie used to give SATs for people at $100 a pop. Fake IDs/passports are easy to get here. So he got a lot of people admitted to college, while borderline legitimate people failed.
If your cheating has externalities, that’s a negative to me. Maybe I’m just hyperaware because I’m in b-school, and every hit on your GPA seems to be translated in people worrying about their job prospects.

Society is a cut throat results oriented place. If you aren’t willing to break certain moral rules, and others are, they have a distinct advantage over you.
There’s a reason that successful business people are always getting involved in scams, that tends to be the way ahead. If you want to do it the honorable way, you’re handicapping yourself, and you have to accept that the majority of other people won’t.
It is unfortunate, but that is the nature of the beast in a capitalistic world. Results are always going to be the most important thing, and the ends always justify the means.

Personally, I just don’t see the point in devoting the time and effort and maybe even sacrificing a grade, just for the purpose of adhering to an extremely flawed and pointless system. It’s honorable and commendable that you do what you do, but it certainly wasn’t my approach.
